The sixth dignity is that of the protospatharii among them, whose insignia, a golden collar of precious stones and pearls, is fastened on his neck by the hand of the emperor. And if the same man is honored as a patrician at the same time, he gives a customary fee as the patricians do. The eighth dignity is that of the patricians among them, whose insignia, tablets, are likewise given with codicils as to all patricians. But in their robes they do not differ from the attire of the protospatharii except only in the loroi, if indeed the rank of protospatharius also accompanies them, nor are the praepositi prevented from serving with distinction in offices, whatever office it may be, being both a praepositus and 723 an official. The eunuch patricians provide a customary fee just as the bearded men do. And when the praepositus brings out from all those being promoted to offices, as on behalf of the emperor, the decision of the promotion, the same praepositus is to receive from each official a customary fee of 24. Therefore let no one transgress such an order and arrangement of the dignities set forth, or pursue them in any other way, except for the clerics and them alone. For these pursue the dignities by word alone. But the dignity of the protospatharii is fastened on by the imperial hand with an imperial short cloak. And these customary fees for the dignities collected by the papias and the deuterus are to be divided between them equally, without the customary fee of the Chrysotriklinos, because it belongs solely to the papias. And the deuterus also has charge of the chairs and the diaetarii and their primicerius and the crowns and the vestments of the emperors and the veils of the Chrysotriklinos and those in charge of the changing-robes and the vestitores with their primicerii and the insignia of the dignities and those in charge of the dignities, who also collect the fees for the dignities from those receiving the dignities. And whoever of them is missing, he who is about to be appointed is to provide the customary fees to the deuterus, just as the papias receives.
