the holy invocation does not happen in one member of man, but seals the whole body of man, purifies, circumcises, it delivers from all evils. 116.7 The holy church, therefore, received these mysteries. But there also rose up against her terrible "enemies of the household," so-called, not being from the true faith of the apostles of the Lord; "for if 116.8 they had been of them, they would have remained with them;" but being illegitimate and a mixed multitude, they again desire the evil desire for the Egyptian food of fish and cucumbers, blaspheming up and down the Son of God, the Ariomaniacs, whom we have already denounced in the preceding discourses, 116.9 and others, the Sabellians. And the Sabellians indeed completely deny the existence of the Son and Holy Spirit, saying that the Son is himself the Father and the Father is himself the Son and the Holy Spirit is himself the Father, so that there is no Son and Holy Spirit, being convicted as a second set of 116.10 Jews and slayers of the Lord. But the Ariomaniacs are the most impious of all, who dare to divide and alienate the Son from the paternal substance, they do not consider the Son to be of equal honor with the Father 116.11 nor to have been begotten from the substance of the Father. And others are their offspring, who before this with the others who were set forth *; would that they had numbered themselves with the Jews who blaspheme the Holy Spirit, a second set of Sadducees and Samaritans and unknown dead and unbelieving people. 117.1 But lest we present at great length the testimonies against these "through ink and paper," so as not to weary the readers, the testimony of the Jordan will suffice for the Sabellians, along with the other testimonies, 117.2 as I have already said. For the Son truly comes to be in the Jordan, God having become man, not having undergone a change but having taken on flesh, not through the seed of a man but from the holy virgin having assumed a body conceived through the Holy Spirit, a perfect body, 117.3 that is, a perfect man in soul and body. Therefore, God and man came to John at the Jordan, being one and the same Son and Christ and Lord; and the Father cries from above, testifying to the Son who was in the Jordan, "This is my beloved Son"; 117.4 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove, he who had come down into the waters, in order to show them to be pure for the sake of those who were about to be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 117.5 And for the Arians, along with what has been said before, it will suffice that the Son said, "I am in the Father and the Father is in me"; for here he demonstrated the equality and genuineness 117.6 of the Son with the Father. And for the offspring of the Arians who blaspheme the Holy Spirit, two testimonies will suffice, which have already been set forth along with the other testimonies, one from 117.7 Daniel, which runs thus: in the furnace of fire, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, praising God, include with themselves the whole creation of God and say, "bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord"; and they numbered heavens and angels and moon and sun and powers, and earth and sea and all things in them, and nowhere did they number the Son and Holy Spirit with the creations. But the Seraphim perhaps hallow the Trinity, saying "holy" not once, not twice, not a fourth time, but three times. 118.1 And again let Peter refute these, 118.1 rebuking Ananias and his companions and saying, "you have tested the 118.2 Holy Spirit"; and he says, "you have not lied to man, but to God." And the apostle knows, as we have often said, that the Spirit is not alien from God, saying, "it searches even the depths of God"; but that which is not from the substance of God is unable to search the depths of 118.3 God. But we know the Father as Father, the Son as Son, the Holy Spirit as Holy Spirit, a Trinity in unity. For one
