of the Lord, it says, and may he grant you the petitions of your heart); that we may enjoy both the good things here and those to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
59.137 HOMILY 23. This beginning of miracles Jesus did in
Cana of Galilee.
1. The devil is very insistent and vehement, besieging our salvation from every side. It is necessary therefore to be watchful and sober, and to wall off his attack from every side. For even if he gains some small pretext, he then builds for himself a broad entrance, and brings in all his power little by little. If, then, we have any care for our salvation, let us not allow him to attack us even in small things, so that from these we may forestall the great ones. For it would be the height of folly for him to show so much eagerness to destroy our soul, while we do not take even an equal measure for our own salvation. These things have not been said by me idly, but because I fear lest this wolf now stand in the midst of the fold unseen by us, and a sheep be made a prey of beasts, straying from the flock and the hearing by laziness and evil plotting. For if the wounds were perceptible, or if the body received the blows, it would not be a task to discern such plots. But since the soul is invisible, and it is the soul that receives the wounds, we need much vigilance, so that each one 59.138 may examine himself. For no one knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man which is in him. For the word speaks to all, and a common medicine is set forth for those in need; but it is for each of the listeners to take what is suitable for his disease. I do not know the sick, I do not know the healthy. For this reason I move every argument and am suited to all passions, now accusing covetousness, then luxury, again rebuking licentiousness, then composing praise and exhortation for almsgiving; then for each of the other good deeds. For I fear lest while we are occupied with one of the arguments, I may unawares heal a different passion, while you are suffering from others. So that if there were one person gathered here, I would not have thought it so very necessary to make the discourse multifaceted. But since in such a multitude it is likely that there are many passions, we not unreasonably vary the teaching; for the word, being applied to all, will certainly find its own use. For this reason also Scripture is multifaceted, speaking to us about countless things, since it speaks to the common nature of men. And in such a multitude, it is necessary that all the passions of the soul be present, even if not all are in all people. Having cleansed ourselves of these things, therefore, let us thus listen to the divine words, and with an attentive 59.139 mind, let us listen also to what has been read to us today. And what are these things? This, it says, beginning of miracles Jesus did in Cana of Galilee. I said before that some say this is not the beginning. For what, says one, if it is added "in Cana of Galilee"? For "this beginning," he says, "he made in Cana." But concerning these things I would not be too precise; but that he began his miracles after his baptism, and before his baptism he worked no miracles, we have shown before. Whether this, or another, was the first miracle that happened of those after the baptism, it does not seem to me very necessary to insist strongly. And he manifested his glory. How, and in what way? For not many were paying attention to what was happening, but the servants, and the
