For what reason, then, did He form Adam outside of paradise, and having formed him outside, place him in paradise, but in paradise create Eve from his rib? Why then did He not also form the woman outside of paradise, and then in this way move her into paradise? so that she might not learn to wander outside of her own house, and might cling to her own home. For if she was formed even in paradise and did not persevere, but both cast herself out and estranged Adam, what was she going to do if she had been formed outside of paradise? From this, worthless women learned to go about from house to house. Reproaching them, the blessed Paul said: At the same time they also learn passions, wandering about from house to house. Job's wife was a disciple of these things; for she said to her own husband: I have become a wanderer and a servant, going about from place to place, and from house to house. Well did she say 'wanderer'; for she had the deceiver in herself. But let no one, I beseech you, henceforth revile Eve. For the holy Theotokos and Virgin has wiped away her reproach. For although she acted disorderly and became a companion to the serpent; yet through childbearing she put away the pain of her iniquity, as the Apostle also recalled, saying: The woman, being deceived, was in the transgression, but she will be saved through childbearing. What childbearing? From Adam himself the children who were born, and from them those after them, then the patriarchs, the prophets, David, and according to the flesh the Lord Christ, who both put grief to flight and awarded grace. What is a beautiful woman? A whitewashed tomb, if she is not chaste. For beauty is both withered by sickness and cut off by death. Prostitute women, taking the initiative, call free women prostitutes, so that the latter may have nothing with which to insult them in return.

TITLE III. -Concerning gluttony and satiety; that gluttony death

causes. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob, Jacob gave Esau bread and a pottage of lentils; and he ate, and drank, and rose up, and went his way, and Esau despised his birthright. The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Go, get thee down quickly from hence. For thy people, whom I brought out of Egypt, have transgressed, and have made a molten calf. The power of Satan is in the navel of the belly. Be not greedy at a table, lest you stumble. 95.1333 A soul that is full scorns honeycombs; but to a hungry soul, even small things seem sweet. He who is wasteful from a child, will be a servant. In the womb he supplanted his brother, Jacob. Woe to them that rise up early in the morning, and follow strong drink, who stay late! For wine shall burn them up. All who drink the wine will be ashamed. They have erred through strong drink, priest and prophet; they are out of the way through wine. All they that rejoice in soul do sigh. The Lord called on that day for weeping and for mourning, for baldness and for girding with sackcloth; but they themselves made gladness, slaying calves and sacrificing sheep, saying, Let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we die. They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet have embraced dunghills. Go not after your lusts, and refrain yourself from your appetites. If you grant your soul the pleasure of desire, you will make it a joy to your enemies. Do not rejoice in much luxury. A colic with a greedy man. Let not the appetite of the belly, nor sexual intercourse, take hold of me. Be not insatiable in any luxury. For in many foods there will be sickness. A man looking at another's table, his life is not in the reckoning of life. Woe to you who are full, for you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh, for you shall mourn and weep. Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and suddenly
