of the vineyard to produce clusters of grapes, not having permitted it; then they found it stronger than their own power, those who are often found in assent to the passions.
(15∆_400> 3.33 (σλγ΄) He has not yet arrived at simplicity, who still requires the diligent care of the hedge of continence. For the perfect man, he says, is not continent; but he is like someone having a vineyard, or a field, not in the midst of many other vineyards and lands, but somewhere in a corner; and for this reason needing much guarding and watchfulness. For of him who has reached simplicity, the vineyard becomes untouched by anyone, just as if of a king or some other terrible potentate, who from mere hearsay causes both thieves and passersby to shudder at the attempt.
3.34 (σλδ΄) Many ascend the cross of hardship; but few accept its nails. Many are servants of voluntary obedience; but of involuntary shame, only those who have destroyed ambition.
3.35 (σλε΄) Many have stripped off all the garments of skin; but as for the last one, that of vainglory, only those who have abhorred its mother, self-satisfaction.
1460 3.36 (σλστ΄) The one who welcomes, but does not accept, the praise of men and the comfort of the body, this man, having become naked of the last garment of vainglory, has been deemed worthy from hence to put on the brightness of the dwelling from heaven that is sought with many groanings.
3.37 (σλζ΄) An operation is one thing, and a work another. And the one is indicative of a perfected sin; the other, of pleasure alone which has been worked within, but without external action. Like those who are not moved from their own land, but nevertheless pay tribute to their oppressors according to their own desires.
(15∆_402> 3.38 (σλη΄) When the taste is dominant in pleasures, it is impossible for all the senses not to follow along, even if the lower parts seem to be at peace due to being colder, like the aged who have [not] received a burning from fire. But a barren woman who commits adultery will not be judged chaste with respect to giving birth. And I would say that everyone who does not fornicate is chaste, and is not bewitched by sight.
3.39 (σλθ΄) In foods and forms and sounds, the desiring part of the soul is tested, what sort it is in regard to voluntary and otherwise-disposed [impulses] in taste, and sight, and hearing, whether as using them rightly, or as misusing them, or being found in the middle of both.
3.40 (σμ΄) In those in whom fear does not lead the way, the thoughts will be found in confusion, like sheep having no shepherd; but in good order, and inside the sheepfold according to good law, when it follows or leads them.
3.41 (σμα΄) Fear is the son of faith; and he is the shepherd of the commandments. And he who has not acquired his mother will not be deemed worthy to be seen as a sheep of the pasture according to the Lord.
3.42 (σμβ΄) Some have only the beginnings of good things; others, also their middle stages; and others, also their ends. Without which, each one will be found like a common soldier or an officer, cut off from his rations. And for this reason, one preserves only and with difficulty his own house from those who attempt to harm it; while another is not found with the appropriate honor in the things in which he engages.
3.43 (σμγ΄) Those who urge those who are perfect to engage in the pleasures of the (15∆_404> throat do something similar to those who are ordered to reopen wounds that have already come to health; or to scratch scabs for the sake of pleasure; or to eat things that ignite a fever, or 1461 to un-fence his vineyard, and to allow to enter, along with good thoughts, like a wild boar the
