there is a unity of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, one substance, one lordship, one 118.4 will, one church, one baptism, one faith. And let those who are against the holy virgin of Christ and pure bride, that is, 118.5 our mother the holy church, cease *. For her children received from the holy fathers, that is, the holy apostles, to keep the faith, and at the same time both to hand it down and declare it to their own children. 118.6 Of whom you also are sons, most honored brothers, and hand down this teaching to your own children. 118.7 Saying these things thus and things similar to these from the divine scriptures * to confirm both yourselves and those who hear you, do not cease, you who are faithful and orthodox, from teaching, making a way, catechizing this holy faith of the catholic church, as the holy and only virgin of God received it from the holy 118.8 apostles of the Lord, to keep it. And thus you ought not only to declare to each of the catechumens who are about to approach the holy font † to believe in your own sons in the Lord, but also to teach expressly, as the same mother of all of you and of us, to say: 118.9 We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven 118.10 and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, that is, of the substance of the Father, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, through whom all things were made, both things in heaven and things on earth; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man, and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate and suffered and was buried, and rose on the third day according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and is coming again with glory to judge the living and the 118.11 dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified together, who spoke through 118.12 the prophets; in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church; we confess one baptism for the remission of sins, we look for the resurrection 118.13 of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen. But those who say, "There was a time when he was not," and "He was not before he was begotten," or that he came into being from nothing, or those who allege that the Son of God is of another hypostasis or substance, or is mutable or alterable, these the catholic and apostolic Church anathematizes. 118.14 And this is the faith that was handed down from the holy apostles and * in the church in the holy city from all the holy bishops of that time together, over three hundred and ten in number. 119.1 But since in our generation certain other successive heresies have sprung up, that is, in the time of the emperors Valentinian and Valens in the tenth year of their reign and again in the sixth year of Gratian, that is, in the 119.2 ninetieth year of Diocletian the tyrant, for this reason both you and we and all the orthodox bishops and, in sum, the whole holy catholic Church, in response to the heresies that have sprung up, in accordance with the faith set forth by those holy fathers, say thus, especially to those approaching the holy font, that they should declare and say thus: 119.3 We believe in one God, the Father almighty,
