KINGS OF THE ARGIVES 17th king of the Argives was Agamemnon, for 18 years, but according to others for 35 years. And it was the 4312th year of the world. 199 In the 8th year of Agamemnon, the war against Troy began because of the theft of Helen by Alexander Paris, son of Priam, king of Ilium, and it lasted for 10 years until the capture of Ilium, which occurred in the subsequent 17th year of Agamemnon. When Agamemnon was king of the Argives and Mycenaeans, and his brother Menelaus of the Lacedaemonians, Priam son of Laomedon was king of Troy and Ilium. This Priam's son, Alexander, also called Paris, having come to the Peloponnese to sacrifice to the local gods, is entertained as a guest by Menelaus in Lacedaemonia. And Menelaus had a wife, a certain Helen, exceedingly beautiful. Alexander, having fallen in love with her and committed adultery, abducted her; and sailing away to Sidon of Phoenicia, he is unwillingly cast ashore. And having been hosted as a guest by the king of the Sidonians, he plots against him and, having taken much money and clothing from Sidon, along with what he had stolen with Helen, and from Lacedaemon, he returns to Troy to his father Priam as if having won a great prize. Agamemnon and Menelaus, having sent various embassies to Priam and his sons concerning Alexander's plot against them, through both Odysseus and Diomedes and Menelaus himself, since they accomplished nothing, although the elder popular leaders around Priam, among whom Antenor was chief, advised that Helen be returned, they take up a terrible war against Troy and Priam, which was waged for 10 years, and in that same tenth year Ilium and Priam and his children were captured by the Greeks. And it was the 4330th year from Adam. And from the birth of Abraham and the 43rd year of the reign of Ninus the second king of the Assyrians, 1018 years are reckoned. And from the birth of Moses, which was in the 46th year of Inachus the first king of the Argives, and in the 3738th year of the world, 562 years are reckoned until the capture of Troy, even if it does not seem so to Eusebius, who errs by an omission of 216 years. 18th king of the Mycenaean Argives was Aegisthus, for 5 years. And it was the 4330th year of the world. 200 19th king of the Mycenaean Argives was Orestes, for 23 years. And it was the 4335th year of the world. Orestes kills Pyrrhus son of Achilles in Delphi in the temple of Apollo, betrayed by Machaereus the priest; and the sons of Hector recovered Ilium, having cast out the Antenoridae by the counsel of Helenus.
After the capture of Troy, KINGS OF THE LATINS. Since there has been much disagreement
among the many concerning the kingdom which was lately named Roman after Romulus, but before him was of the Latins from Latinus who reigned before Aeneas in the time of the Trojan war, and the same people before him were called Albans from Albanus Cronus who is said to be the first of all kings in Italy, we consider it superfluous for a canonical study to set forth their uses, indicating only this, that before Aeneas they say 1st Picus son of Cronus reigned over the country of Laurentum for 37 years, and the country extended to the present city of Rome, and after him Faunus his son, of Picus who is also Zeus, for 44 years. Some say this one was Hermes, in whose time Heracles, having returned from Spain, raised an altar in the forum called Boarium, because he had killed Cacus son of Hephaestus; and as it seemed to some, Heracles also reigned after Faunus for 35 years. Then Latinus for 36 years. In his 33rd year, Aeneas arrived from Ilium, equipped with arms and wealth with those who were with him, and having allied himself with Latinus against the Rutuli and killed Turnus, he is joined to Lavinia, daughter of king Latinus, and he reigns over the country after Latinus for 3 years, founding a city named after his wife, Lavinia, in which he also reigned. Some say that Aeneas reigned for 8 years, and for 4 years over the Latins after the capture of Troy, but others that he reigned for only three from the 9th year after the same
