he would justly fill the world above with those according to him who are born of the Spirit unto incorruption, having become the pioneer through the likeness of his own obedience. And let no one disbelieve who has even a little awareness of the dominion of God and is not ignorant of its magnitude. Thus, then, the world above is filled with those who are born according to Christ in the Spirit, and thus the law according to the flesh and of the birth below receives a fitting end, and all things are reordered towards the world above.

ƒΑ (91). ANOTHER INSIGHT INTO THE SAME

Another insight into the same. And since the word of the teacher seems to me to have another meaning in addition to these, this too must be stated as is possible for us (14∆_382>, with God directing the word in the Gospels. The sole cause of all things 1277 and God, my Jesus, teaching secretly in parables, called man a sheep that had strayed from the divine hundred, and a coin lost from the divine ten, and a prodigal son who foolishly leaped away from the father and dissolved the concord of the divine and brotherly dyad: a sheep, as being, I think, an object of providence, and led, and ordered, and providing three necessities to its possessor—wool, lamb, and milk; as one both nourished and nourishing, by the word and manner of natural contemplation; and one both clothed and clothing, by the manner of moral philosophy; and one both being rich and enriching through the generation of its like by the mystery of true vision; and a coin, as being bright and royal, and by the reason of its image characteristic of the divine archetype, and capable, as far as possible, of receiving the whole of the divine beauty; and a son, as heir of the paternal goods and equal in honor to the father according to the gift of grace.

This man, then, as a sheep gone astray, God the provider, seeking as a shepherd, found, and placing him on his own shoulders, brought him back to the fold of his fellow sheep; and as an image buried by the passions and having defaced its original beauty, the Word, as wisdom, lighting his own flesh like a lamp with the light of his own divinity, found him, and makes the finding a cause for great joy, by which he filled up the lack in the divine ten. And as a son deadened by sin and lost through ignorance concerning God, the good Father received him upon his return, and bestows on him again without fail the tokens of his former dignity, and what is indeed the greatest and most mystical of all, he sacrifices the fatted calf—whatever this calf was, and its wondrous sacrifice (and I think it is the most sublime and hidden and unknown Word of the inconceivable (14∆_384> and unknown manner according to the divine and ineffable providence, and its God-befitting impartation to created beings)—and he makes the son's return the capital point of unspeakable joy, which magnificently completed the dyad of the sons, whatever this might be, and before it the decade of coins, and before that the hundred of sheep.

Let us now pass over speaking of these things, if you please, to survey the mystical meaning for each number at a more opportune time in other works with careful elaboration, as God grants.

If, therefore, as a sheep the good shepherd, placing him on his shoulders, brought man back to his fellow sheep, and as a coin having the royal impression through its image the Lord and Savior, as the wisdom and power of God the Father, found man through the incarnation, and as a son returning, the good and all-merciful Father received him, and numbered and enrolled him with the powers in heaven, having filled the lack in each of the heavenly numbers through the
