in succession, and in truth I find myself having not even kept the one talent out of all those given to me together. I seem to grasp the summit of good things and lying below in the abyss of my sins I am held fast and am plunged into despair and when I become lower than all, then I am lifted up above the heavens and by love I am united again with Christ our God, in whom I also hope, when deprived of this earthly and heavy flesh, to stand nearer, and not only so but also to be initiated more clearly into the eternal gladness and exultation of the love that is there.
These things, therefore, my brothers, I have wished to write, not as desiring to hunt for glory—for such a one is foolish and a stranger to the glory from above—but so that you may know the immeasurable love for mankind of God, and of what sort is the very light burden of the commandments of our Savior Christ and God, and how great is the recompense of His gift, so that learning these things you might either long to attain His love or, fearing and trembling to fail in this as at an eternal death, you will be taught in addition to these things both the height of humility and the proof of perfect love, and you will also know the commerce of God's condescension, and you will understand the gift of His great and unceasing emptying of Himself for us, and you will learn the awesome manner of the remolding of the man of dust, and how they live who have willed to believe in the crucified Christ, that is, those who have imitated His (242) obedience and humility and have willed to incline from worse things to better things, and how those who abandon all things for the love of Him who loved us are changed, while being deprived of none of the things present or to come, how marvelously the dark become light when they have drawn near to the great light, who also, as Moses once did, are established as gods of those below, being united with those above, and though they are with all people, they are in no way defiled by their association with others; and in benefiting those who draw near, they suffer no loss of the good, but in giving mercy to others also, they receive more than they give, rather by being made lovingly like the One who loves mankind, inasmuch as they ascend by being humbled and inasmuch as they are exalted by being humbled, lacking all necessities in their humility and wanting for nothing, being nourished by the eternal life of holy love.
Behold, then, I have uncovered to you, my friends and brothers, the mysteries hidden in me—for I see the end of my life drawing nigh—so that you may know both the ways of repentance, the ascents and progressions of the beginning and the middle, and the measures of perfection, and that you may hasten to imitate, if no one else, at least the one who has surely begotten you and loved you from his soul, who has nourished you with milk by the word of God and fed you with the life-giving bread and shown you how to walk in the way of the saving commandments of God, to whom is due all glory now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
On the methods of the evil one, which he suggests to the more frivolous and to those who love to be first, whenever the shepherd is chosen from among men. And that it is necessary to hinder those who unworthily leap at the office with all one’s might, to push on to
this and to cooperate. And at the end, to the shepherd.

ἑξῆς, καί ὅλως ἐν ἀληθείᾳ εὑρίσκομαι μηδέ τό ἕν φυλάξας τάλαντον ἐκ πάντων ὁμοῦ τῶν δοθέντων μοι. Τῶν καλῶν καταλαβεῖν δοκῶ τό ἀκρότατον καί εἰς τήν ἄβυσσον τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου κάτω κείμενος κατέχομαι καί τῇ ἀπογνώσει βυθίζομαι καί ὅταν πάντων κατώτερος γένωμαι, τότε ὑπεράνω τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀναφέρομαι καί τῇ ἀγάπῃ πάλιν ἑνοῦμαι Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ ἡμῶν, ᾧ καί ἐλπίζω, τῆς γεώδους ταύτης καί βαρείας σαρκός στερηθείς, παραστῆναι ἐγγύτερον, οὐ μήν ἀλλά γάρ καί μυηθῆναι σαφέστερον τῆς ἐκεῖ ἀγάπης τήν αἰώνιον εὐφροσύνην καί ἀγαλλίασιν.
Ταῦτα τοιγαροῦν, ἀδελφοί μου, γράψαι ἠθέλησα οὐχ ὡς δόξαν θηρᾶσαι βουλόμενος ἄφρων γάρ ὁ τοιοῦτος καί τῆς ἄνω δόξης ἀλλότριος , ἀλλ᾿ ὅπως εἰδότες ἔσεσθε τήν ἄμετρον φιλανθρωπίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καί οἷον ὑπάρχει τῶν ἐντολῶν τό φορτίον τό ἐλαφρότατον αὐτοῦ τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Χριστοῦ καί Θεοῦ καί ὅση τῆς αὐτοῦ δωρεᾶς ἡ ἀντίδοσις ἅ καί μανθάνοντες ἤ ἐπιποθήσατε τῆς αὐτοῦ ἀγάπης ἐπιτυχεῖν ἤ τό ταύτης ἀποτυχεῖν ὡς αἰώνιον θάνατον φοβήθητε καί φρίξατε , διδαχθήσεσθε δέ πρός τούτοις καί ταπεινώσεως ὕψος καί τελείας ἀγάπης τεκμήριον, ἔτι δέ καί τό ἐμπόρευμα τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ συγκαταβάσεως γνώσεσθε καί τό δῶρον τῆς μεγάλης αὐτοῦ καί ἀκενώτου πρός ἡμᾶς κενώσεως εἴσεσθε καί τόν φρικτόν τρόπον τῆς χοϊκῆς ἀναπλάσεως καταμάθετε, ὅπως τε ζῶσιν οἱ πιστεῦσαι θελήσαντες τῷ σταυρωθέντι Χριστῷ, οἱ μιμησάμενοι δηλονότι τήν αὐτοῦ (242) ὑπακοήν καί ταπείνωσιν καί νεῦσαι βουληθέντες ἐκ τῶν χειρόνων ἐπί τά κρείττονα, καί ὅπως ἀλλοιοῦνται οἱ διά τήν ἀγάπην τοῦ ἡμᾶς ἀγαπήσαντος πάντα καταλιμπάνοντες, μηδενός δέ τῶν ἐνεστώτων ἤ μελλόντων στερούμενοι, ὅπως γίνονται παραδόξως οἱ σκοτεινοί φῶς, τῷ μεγάλῳ φωτί πλησιάσαντες, οἵ καί τῶν κάτω, καθά καί Μωσῆς ποτε, θεοί ἀποκαθίστανται, τοῖς ἄνω ἑνούμενοι, καί μετά πάντων ὄντες οὐδαμῶς ἐκ τῆς συνουσίας τῶν ἄλλων μολύνονται· καί εὐεργετοῦντες τούς πλησιάζοντας ζημίαν τοῦ καλοῦ οὐδεμίαν ὑφίστανται, ἀλλά μεταδίδοντες καί ἑτέροις τόν ἔλεον λαμβάνουσι πλέον ἤ διδοῦσι, μᾶλλον τῷ ὁμοιοῦσθαι φιλανθρώπως τῷ φιλανθρώπῳ, ὅσον ἀνέλθωσι ταπεινούμενοι καί ὅσον ταπεινωθῶσιν ὑψούμενοι, πάντων ἀποροῦντες τῇ ταπεινώσει τῶν ἀναγκαίων καί μηδενός λειπόμενοι, τρεφόμενοι τῇ αἰωνίῳ ζωῇ τῆς ἁγίας ἀγάπης.
Ἰδού οὖν ἀνεκάλυψα ὑμῖν τοῖς φίλοις καί ἀδελφοῖς μου τά ἐν ἐμοί κεκρυμμένα μυστήρια - τό τέλος τῆς ἐμῆς ζωῆς ἐγγίζον ὁρῶ ὅσον οὔπω , ἵνα εἰδῆτε καί μετανοίας τρόπους, ἀρχῆς τε καί μεσότητος ἀναβάσεις καί προκοπάς καί τελειότητος μέτρα, καί σπουδάσητε μιμήσασθαι, εἰ μή τινα ἄλλον, τόν γοῦν γεγεννηκότα πάντως ὑμᾶς καί ἐκ ψυχῆς ἀγαπήσαντα, γαλακτοτροφήσαντά τε τῷ λόγῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ καί τῷ ζωογονοῦντι θρέψαντα ἄρτῳ καί βαδίζειν ὑποδείξαντα ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ τῶν σωτηρίων ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ᾧ πρέπει πᾶσα δόξα νῦν καί ἀεί καί εἰς τούς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Περί μεθόδων τοῦ πονηροῦ, ὧν ὑποβάλλει τοῖς κουφοτέροις καί φιλοπρωτεύουσιν, ὁπόταν ὁ ποιμήν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων γένηται. Καί ὅτι χρή τούς μέν ἀναξίως ἐπιπηδῶντας τῇ ἀρχῇ πάσῃ κωλύειν συνωθεῖν ἐπί
τοῦτο καί συνεργεῖν. Καί πρός τῷ τέλει, πρός τόν ποιμένα.
