to recognize a friend, he will know from the list of ancient martyrs collected by us; 5.22.1 And in the tenth year of the reign of Commodus, Victor succeeded Eleutherus, who had held the episcopate for thirteen years; at which time, as Julianus was completing his tenth year, Demetrius took charge of the ministry of the parishes in Alexandria; during which time also Serapion, the eighth from the apostles, whom we have already mentioned, was still known as bishop of the church of Antioch. Theophilus was the leader of Caesarea of Palestine, and likewise Narcissus, whom the account has mentioned before, still at that time held the ministry of the church in Jerusalem, and Bacchylus was bishop of Corinth in Greece at the same time, and Polycrates of the parish in Ephesus. And countless others, as is likely, in addition to these, distinguished themselves at this time; of those, at least, whose orthodoxy of faith has come down to us in writing, we have fittingly listed them by name. At this time, then, a question of no small importance was raised, because the parishes of all Asia, as from a more ancient tradition, thought they ought to observe the fourteenth day of the moon for the feast of the Savior's Passover, on which the Jews had been commanded to sacrifice the lamb, so that they should on all accounts end their fasts on this day, on whatever day of the week it might happen to fall, since it was not the custom to celebrate in this manner in the churches throughout the rest of the world, which observed from apostolic tradition the custom that has prevailed to this day, as it was not proper to end the fasts on any other day than that of the resurrection of our Savior, 5.23.2 synods and conferences of bishops were held for this purpose, and all with one accord by letters formulated an ecclesiastical decree for those everywhere that the mystery of the Lord’s resurrection from the dead should be celebrated on no other day than the Lord's day, and that on this day alone we should observe the end of the Paschal fasts. 5.23.3 There is extant to this day a writing of those who were then assembled in Palestine, over whom presided Theophilus, bishop of the parish in Caesarea, and Narcissus of that in Jerusalem, and likewise another of those in Rome on the same question, which indicates Victor as bishop, and of the bishops in Pontus, over whom Palmas as the most senior presided, and of the parishes in Gaul, which Irenaeus superintended, 5.23.4 and also of those in Osroene and the cities there, and particularly of Bacchylus, the bishop of the church of the Corinthians, and of a great many others, who, having expressed one and the same opinion and judgment, passed the same vote. And the decision of these was one, that which has been declared; 5.24.1 But of the bishops in Asia who insisted that the custom handed down to them of old must be preserved, Polycrates was the leader; who himself also, in the letter which he composed to Victor and the church of Rome, sets forth the tradition that had come to him through these words: 5.24.2 "We therefore keep the day undeviatingly, neither adding nor taking away. For in Asia also great lights have fallen asleep, who shall rise again on the day of the Lord's coming, in which He will come with glory from heaven and will seek out all the saints, Philip of the twelve apostles, who has fallen asleep in Hierapolis, and his two daughters who grew old as virgins, and his other daughter who lived in the Holy Spirit rests in Ephesus; 5.24.3 and also John, who reclined upon the breast of the Lord, who became a priest wearing the petalon, and a martyr and teacher; he has fallen asleep in Ephesus, 5.24.4 and also Polycarp in Smyrna, both bishop and martyr; and Thraseas, both bishop and martyr from Eumeneia, who has fallen asleep in Smyrna. 5.24.5 And why need I mention Sagaris, bishop and martyr, who has fallen asleep in Laodicea, and also the blessed Papirius, and Melito the eunuch, who in the Holy Spirit
