he laid it aside from the mountain. And for a third time, having been led astray by his wife Delilah and having told her of the divine strength in his hair, he is shorn by her and, betrayed to the foreigners, he is blinded, imprisoned in a mill, bound in fetters; and when they were celebrating his capture after some time, his hair having already grown out a little, they brought him out, ordering him to entertain them. And he, having been supported against the pillars by the one leading him by the hand, and having prayed to God for vengeance against them, buried both those in the house and those who had gone up on the roofs, about 3000, by pulling down the pillars and perishing along with them; whom his brothers and parents buried, after he had judged Israel for 20 years. Counting from the first year of Samson to the first contest at Olympia held by Heracles, you will find 430 years until the first Olympiad. Anarchy and peace for 40 years. And it was the year of the world 4310. The events concerning Micah, who made a graven image and an ephod and a house for God and established a priest, whom the 600 from the tribe of Dan came and took, were in these times, and the events concerning the woman who was dismembered and the war against the tribe of Benjamin, where Scripture says that Phinehas son of Eleazar was living. Josephus says that the events concerning the dismembered woman in Gibeah and the war of the 11 tribes against the tribe of Benjamin happened immediately after the death of Joshua, and he at the end of the judges, there being much disagreement concerning the times from Moses until Eli the priest. 204 Scripture was silent about the times of Joshua son of Nun and the elders after him, but unwritten custom has handed down 27 for Joshua, and 18 for the elders; and thus almost all are in agreement. But Eusebius of Caesarea alone did not include the years of the elders, while Africanus assigned 30 years to them, for which Eusebius brings many charges against him, saying that he was greatly in error and had undertaken a most audacious matter, having inserted besides these another 70 years of his own—40 for the anarchy, and 30 for the peace—100 in all. But Africanus, for his part, admits concerning these things that they are disputed at the end of his fifth book. But Eusebius, wishing to establish the 450 years of the judges mentioned by the divine apostle in Acts, made use of some of these, he is nevertheless at a loss, saying that the years after the death of Moses down to Solomon and the building of the temple are stated otherwise in the third book of Kings. For he says: And it came to pass in the 440th year of the exodus from Egypt that Solomon began to build the temple. But the Hebrew has: And it came to pass in the 480th year. But these things, he says, the teachers of the Jews said were accurately computed by counting only the period of rule of the judges from Israel and not reckoning separately that of the foreigners, but including it in that of the judges; which does not agree with the holy book of Judges. Indeed, he says that the holy apostle, in saying 450 years for the judges, was not speaking with precision, but according to a more common interpretation. If, therefore, according to the apostle, we add up the 450 years of the judges and the 40 years of Moses in the wilderness, the 27 of Joshua and the 18 of the elders after Joshua, and further the 20 of Eli the priest, the 20 of Samuel and the 40 of Saul, the 40 of David and the 4 of Solomon, the total time from the exodus to the construction of the temple will be 659 years, but according to Eusebius it is 600, and according to Africanus over 740. But according to each of these three numbers, the generations which arose from the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Levi, whether divided or not, will have an improbable rate of childbearing. For from Abraham to David there are 14 generations. Of these, 9 were at the time of Moses in the wilderness, during which Nahshon son of Amminadab, ruler of the tribe of Judah, was known, whose sister Elisheba Aaron the high priest married; who died in the wilderness. And from Nahshon to 205 David there are 5 generations, as follows: Salmon son of Nahshon, who took Rahab the prostitute in the time of Joshua, begot Boaz; and Boaz begot Obed by Ruth; and Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David. How then is it possible for the 9 generations from Abraham to Moses to have occurred in 470 years, but only five from Joshua son of Nun to David in 600 years? For each one will be 120
