having conducted his whole life, who lies in Sardis awaiting the visitation from heaven in which he will be raised from the dead? 5.24.6 All these observed the fourteenth day of the Passover according to the Gospel, transgressing in nothing, but following according to the rule of faith. And I also, Polycrates, the least of you all, according to the tradition of my relatives, some of whom I have followed. For seven of my relatives were bishops, and I am the eighth. And my relatives always kept the day when the people put away the leaven. 5.24.7 I therefore, brethren, who have lived sixty-five years in the Lord, and have met with the brethren throughout the world, and have gone through every Holy Scripture, am not frightened by those who threaten us; for those greater than I have said, ‘We ought to obey God rather than men.’ 5.24.8 To this he adds, concerning the bishops who were present with him as he wrote and who agreed with him, saying these words: “I could mention the bishops who were present, whom you requested that I summon, and I summoned them. If I should write their names, they would be a great multitude. And they, knowing my smallness, approved my letter, knowing that I did not bear my gray hairs in vain, but have always lived my life in Christ Jesus.” 5.24.9 Upon this, Victor, who presided over the church of the Romans, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the dioceses of all Asia, with the neighboring churches, as being heterodox; and he denounces them by letters, proclaiming all the brethren there wholly excommunicated. 5.24.10 But this did not please all the bishops. Therefore they exhorted him to consider the things of peace, and of unity and love toward his neighbors. And there are extant the words of these men, sharply rebuking Victor. 5.24.11 Among them was Irenaeus, who, writing in the name of the brethren whom he led in Gaul, maintained that the mystery of the resurrection of the Lord should be observed only on the Lord's day, yet fittingly he exhorts Victor that he should not cut off whole churches of God which observed the tradition of an ancient custom; and he gives him much other counsel, adding these words: 5.24.12 “For the controversy is not only concerning the day, but also concerning the very manner of the fast. For some think that they should fast one day, others two, yet others more; some, moreover, count their day as consisting of forty hours, day and night. 5.24.13 And such a variety among the observers has not arisen in our time, but long before, among those before us, who, it is likely, not keeping to it with strict accuracy, established in their simplicity and as a private matter the custom for posterity. And yet all these lived in peace, and we live in peace with one another, and the disagreement of the fast confirms the agreement of the faith.” 5.24.14 To these he adds a story, which I shall appropriately quote, in the following manner: “Among these were the presbyters before Soter, who presided over the church of which you now are the leader—we mean Anicetus and Pius, Hyginus and Telesphorus and Xystus—they neither observed it themselves, nor did they permit those with them to do so. And yet, though not observing it, they were at peace with those from the dioceses in which it was observed, when they came to them; and yet the observance stood in greater opposition to those who did not observe. 5.24.15 And no one was ever cast out for this manner of observance, but the presbyters before you who did not observe it, sent the Eucharist to those from the dioceses who did observe it. 5.24.16 And when the blessed Polycarp was visiting in Rome in the time of Anicetus, and they had a little difference among themselves about certain other matters, they immediately made peace with one another, not caring to quarrel with one another on this main point. For neither could Anicetus persuade Polycarp not to observe, as he had always observed it with John the disciple of our Lord and the rest
