SPORADIC NOTES The Lycian games were first established. The return of the Heracleidae
Hyllus the elder, son of Heracles, led the battle against the Peloponnesians, which prevailed for a considerable number of years between the Peloponnesians and the Heracleidae. Then the island of Rhodes was settled by the Lacedaemonians, as Dexippus records, who had migrated from the Peloponnese because of the attack of the Heracleidae. 208 At that time the rule of Mycenae was also overthrown, having lasted for 6 years according to some, but fewer according to others. The Amazons invaded Asia along with the Cimmerians. They also burned the temple in Ephesus beforehand.
KINGS OF THE ATHENIANS The 15th king of the Athenians was Thymoetes, who reigned for 9 years, of Apheidas
brother. The year of the world was 4365. Under him, the kingdom of the Erechtheids, called that of the Atticans, was overthrown among the Athenians, and passed to another family. For when Xanthus the Boeotian challenged Thymoetes and Thymoetes did not answer, Melanthus of Pylos, son of Andropompus, took up the challenge, fought in single combat, and upon winning became king. From this the festival of the Apaturia is celebrated in Athens, because the victory was won with deceit. The 16th king of the Athenians was Melanthus of Pylos, son of Andropompus, who reigned for 37 years. The year of the world was 4374. The 17th king of the Athenians was Codrus, son of Melanthus, who reigned for 21 years. The year of the world was 4411. Under him the return of the Heracleidae to the Peloponnese took place, and the Ionians fled to Athens, having been driven out of Achaea. The Peloponnesians marched against Athens, to whom Codrus, son of Melanthus, gave himself up because of an oracle, and no longer were there kings, but archons for life were established for the Athenians. The 18th king of the Athenians was Medon, son of Codrus, who reigned for 20 years. He is the first of the so-called archons for life among the Athenians. The year of the world was 4432. The 19th of the Athenians, the 2nd archon, was Acastus, son of Medon, for 35 years. The year of the world was 4452. Under Acastus, the colonization of Ionia. And Homer is recorded to have lived among the Greeks, according to some; but according to others, a little earlier, and still others, later.
209 KINGS OF THE LACEDAEMONIANS The 1st king of the Lacedaemonians was Eurystheus
for 42 years. The year of the world was 4423. Eurystheus and Procles ruled Sparta. The 2nd king of the Lacedaemonians was Agis, who reigned for 1 year. The year of the world was 4465. The 3rd king of the Lacedaemonians was Echestratus, who reigned for 35 years. The year of the world was 4466. The 4th king of the Lacedaemonians was Labotes, who reigned for 37 years. The year of the world was 4501. The 5th king of the Lacedaemonians was Doryssus, who reigned for 29 years. The year of the world was 4538.
KINGS OF THE CORINTHIANS From Diodorus on the rule of the Corinthians
Since these matters have been clarified by us, it remains to speak of Corinthia and Sicyonia, in what manner they were settled by the Dorians. For nearly all the peoples throughout the Peloponnese, except the Arcadians, happened to be displaced during the return of the Heracleidae. The Heracleidae, therefore, in the division, having set aside Corinthia and its neighboring territory, sent for Aletes, handing over to him the aforesaid country. And having become a distinguished man and having increased Corinth, he reigned for 38 years. And after his death, the eldest of the descendants always reigned until the tyranny of Cypselus, which was 447 years after the return of the Heracleidae. And the first among them to succeed to the kingdom was Ixion for 38 years, after whom Agelas ruled for 37 years, and after them Prymnis for 35 years, and Bacchis likewise for the same time, becoming the most distinguished of those before him. For which reason it came to pass that those who reigned after this were no longer called Heracleidae, but Bacchidae
