the paths of the deceiver, but they recognized 10.68 the way of truth. "I will make darkness light for them, and crooked things straight." For instead of their former darkness, they enjoy spiritual light, and having left the twisted paths, they walk the straight way. Then he rebukes them as still wandering: "Be utterly ashamed, you who trust in graven images, who say to molten images: You are our gods." And a little after: "Behold, I am doing new things, which will now spring forth, and you will know them; and I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the waterless land, ... to give drink to my chosen race, my people, whom I have acquired for myself, to declare my virtues." Now he called the believers his race, of whom he was named the firstborn because of the flesh he assumed. 10.69 That he said these things about the Gentiles, the following testifies: "Listen, you islands, and pay attention, you nations; after a long time you shall stand, says the Lord." And that none of these things is fitting for the Jews, both the name of the islands and that of the nations testify. And again: "Listen to me, my people; and you kings, give ear to me; for a law shall go forth from me, and my judgment as a light to the nations; my righteousness draws near quickly, and my salvation shall go forth as a light; the islands will wait for me, and in my arm 10.70 the nations will hope." And through all these things he prophesied the salvation of the nations and the evangelical law and the light of knowledge, which he brought to all men through the holy apostles. However, he did not name a bodily limb "arm"—for the divine nature is simple and free from composition—but tropologically indicated its strength. For since it is through their hands that warriors are arrayed for battle, and farmers work, and indeed those who practice any other art, he fittingly indicated his strength through the arm, trusting in which we cry out: "I will not fear 10.71 evils, for you are with me." And again he cries out: "Behold, I have given him as a witness among the nations, a ruler and commander for the nations. Behold, nations that do not know you will call upon you; peoples who do not understand you will take refuge in you for the sake of the Lord your God and of the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you." Seeing, therefore, the Lord Christ reigning over the world and all the nations gladly singing hymns to his lordship, both understand 10.72 the prophecy and marvel at the truth. And listen to what follows: "And those from the west will fear the name of the Lord, and those from the rising of the sun his glorious name." And again: "I became manifest to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. I said: Behold, I am here, behold, I am here, to nations who did not call upon my name." And the whole prophecy is full of these words. 10.73 But so that we might also show the other prophets prophesying in harmony, listen to Jeremiah crying out: "In that time they shall call Jerusalem the Throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered to it, and they shall no longer walk after the devices 10.74 of their evil heart." Behold, O men, the harmony of the words and see people from all places running together to that city, which received the Lord's and saving passion, abhorring the deceit of idols, but offering their worship to the Crucified one. 10.75 And these things also from the same prophet: "Thus says the Lord: stand in the ways and see; seek the eternal paths of the Lord, and see which is the good way, and walk in it, and you will find holiness for your souls. And they said: We will not walk. I have set watchmen over you; listen to the voice of the trumpet. And they said: We will not listen. Therefore the nations heard and those shepherding the flocks among them." 10.76 For to the Jews first were brought both from the prophets and from the apostles the divine proclamations; but since they spoke against them, the God-given gifts were granted to all the nations; and the God of the prophet calls the old prophets "ways," but "the good way" him
