So from Adam until his 8th year there are 4478 years, but according to Africanus 4457, and according to Eusebius 4170. And from the divine scriptures it is possible for the one who wishes to learn the accuracy of our account. And that the account concerning the writings among the Tyrians is not a story composed by me, I shall present as a witness Dio, an able man, believed to have been accurate concerning Phoenician history. This man, then, in his histories concerning the Phoenicians, writes in this manner. When Abibalus died, his son Hiram became king. He filled in the eastern parts of the city and made the town larger, and the temple of Olympian Zeus, being by itself, he joined to the city by filling in the intervening space to the same level, and he adorned it with golden offerings. And going up to Lebanon, he cut timber for the construction of the temples. And they say that Solomon, the ruler of Jerusalem, sent riddles to Hiram and asked to receive some from him, on condition that the one unable to discern them should pay money to the one who solved them. And that Hiram, having agreed and being unable to solve the riddles, spent much of his money for the penalty. Then, through a certain Tyrian man, Abdemon, he both solved the proposed riddles and himself proposed others, and that Solomon, not solving them, paid back much money to Hiram. Thus Dio has testified to us concerning the aforementioned things. But to this we shall also add Menander of Ephesus. And this man has written the deeds of each of the kings which happened among the Greeks and barbarians, who says concerning Hiram: And when Abibalus died, his son Hiram succeeded to the kingdom, who, having lived 53 years, reigned for 34. He filled in the Eurychoros, and set up the golden pillar in the temple of Zeus, and going for a supply of wood, he cut cedar logs from Mount Lebanon for the roofs of the temples. Then in his time there was a younger son of Abdemon, who always solved the problems which Solomon the king of Jerusalem posed.
