resting and being bound willingly, but always speaking against material reasonings, expect only the help and assistance of God, whereupon to souls undertaking such zeal and purpose and endurance, the Lord himself is already secretly present and helps and protects and supports toward every fruit of virtue. Even if they are in labor and affliction, even if in knowledge of truth and manifestation of soul, they have not yet received the grace of the spirit and the repose of the heavenly gift, and in full assurance they have not perceived this because of the ineffable wisdom of God and his unutterable judgments, as he tests in various ways the believing souls and looks toward the love that comes from will and purpose. For there are boundaries and measures and standards of free will and of the will of love and of the disposition's power toward all his holy commandments; and so the souls, fulfilling the measure of their love and debt, are deemed worthy of the kingdom and of eternal life. For God is just and his judgments are just and “with him there is no partiality,” but according to the proportion of his benefactions, whether bodily or spiritual or of knowledge or of understanding or of discernment, which God has also placed in the nature of men in various ways. Judging each one, he will seek the fruits of virtue and will repay each according to his works in the day of judgment; “for he will come,” he says, “and will repay each according to his works”; and “the mighty will be mightily tested; for the least is worthy of pardon through mercy.” And the Lord says: “The slave who knew his master's will and did not do it will be beaten with many stripes; but he who did not know, yet did things deserving of blows, will be beaten with few. And to whom they committed much, of him they will ask the more.” But understand knowledge and understanding in different ways, whether according to grace and the heavenly gift of the spirit or according to a natural sequence of understanding or of discernment and through education in the divine scriptures. For each will be required to produce the fruits of virtue in proportion to the benefactions given to him by God, whether natural or given by divine grace. Therefore every man is without excuse before God in the day of judgment; for each, according to what he knew, will be required to give back the fruits of faith and love and every virtue toward him from purpose and will, whether through hearing or having never heard a word from God. For the faithful and truth-loving soul, looking toward the eternal good things laid up for the righteous and to the ineffable benefaction of the divine grace that is to come, considers herself and her zeal and labor and toil unworthy of the ineffable promises of the spirit. This is the one poor in spirit, whom the Lord calls blessed; this is the one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness; this is the one who is contrite in heart. Those who undertake such a purpose and zeal and labor and longing for virtue and who remain in it until the end, will in truth be able to attain life and the eternal kingdom. Therefore let none of the brothers boast against his brother or advance into conceit, being stolen away by evil, as if to say, behold I possess a spiritual gift; for it is not worthy for Christians to think these things. For what tomorrow will do to him, you do not know; and what his end will be and what yours will be, you do not know. But let each one, paying attention to himself, examine his own conscience always and test the work of his heart, what zeal and struggle the mind has toward God. And looking to the perfect goal of freedom and passionlessness and the rest of the spirit, let him run unceasingly and tirelessly, being fully assured in no gift or even justification. glory and worship to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit for the
