the study of the divine Scriptures, the precise knowledge of the apostolic canons and traditions, the orthodoxy of doctrines, purity of heart, persistent prayer and compunction, (262) standing before the divine bema in fear and trembling of God, the mystery of the sacred liturgy, the revelation of the mysteries of God, since to them it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven according to the Lord's voice, so that they may be divine salt and light to all the brotherhood and to those outside, having the word of life in themselves.
But if you must ever be moved with righteous anger with rod and staff against the disorderly, in order to make a check on evil and to stop a pestilential corruption among them, so that the results of wicked work and disposition may not be extended for the worse, not even this was judged out of place by the apostles in their ordinances and by our God-bearing fathers. For every movement and every action of ours, which checks and pursues evil, but helps righteousness and virtue, is both praiseworthy and pleasing to God and well-accepted by all the just. And Jesus is a witness, striking the stubborn Jews with a whip, those who had made the house of prayer a house of trade, and overturning the tables of the money-changers. Therefore, do not, in a pretense of meekness merely for the praise of men, despise some small matter that has occurred against God's commandment to the destruction of the apostolic canons and ordinances and to the insult of the evangelical life and the monastic state, but imitating your Jesus and God, (363) being indignant and dispassionately stirring yourself, carry out vengeance for the commandments of God and for the canons set forth by His apostles. Let there be for you, along with all things, precision in the examination of each one's thoughts, so that you may know which of them require the station of those who pray and commune, and which require excommunication and the repentance with tears and the station of the penitents, so that you do not, instead of a holy temple, make the church of God a den of thieves or a brothel, in ignorance or in knowledge through partiality, and you will not escape for this the fearful judgment of the wrath of God.
For know that to each of such persons the eyewitnesses and disciples of the Word rightly assigned a suitable place. And you must rather apply yourself diligently to the reading of their ordinances and canons, so that you may know what are the hidden mysteries of those who believe in Christ, and not err by doing things that are not fitting for godliness. "You will make your spiritual sons reverent," according to what is written, and you will teach them to have reverence for the sacred and divine places and vessels of the sanctified temple of God and of its liturgy, since it is written: "Blessed is the man who is in awe of all things through reverence." For, know, only to the ordained and to those purified from many struggles and repentance through tears, who partake of the undefiled mysteries of Christ, to the sanctified and most reverent (264) of the monks was the ministration of such things and the touching of them dedicated by the fathers and apostles. You will not permit entry to the divine bema to all and to those who wish it, but only, as has been said, to the ordained and sanctified from among your most reverent brothers and fathers, but to the rest and to the brothers who walk disorderly, see what is said to you, you will close it off. For many, know well, are cut off from the present life from contempt of such things, and if you at all overlook this happening, the blood of those who are for this reason cut off from life will be required from your hands.
These things, O shepherd of the sheep of Christ, and even more than these, you ought to know precisely and to do diligently for the protection of your flock. Therefore, if you have known yourself to have advanced to such sufficiency and to have been blessed with such things
