But if ever it is necessary for you to move with just anger, with a rod and staff, against the disorderly, in order to put a stop to evil and to check a pestilential corruption among them, so that the effects of their wicked work and disposition may not extend for the worse, this was not judged out of place by the apostles in their own ordinances nor by our God-bearing fathers. For every motion and every action of ours which checks and persecutes wickedness, but aids righteousness and virtue, is praiseworthy and pleasing to God and well-accepted by all the righteous. And Jesus is a witness, striking the stubborn Jews with a whip, who had made the house of prayer a house of trade, and overturning the tables of the money-changers. Therefore, do not, under the pretense of gentleness and only for the praise of men, despise some small thing done against God's commandment to the destruction of the apostolic canons and ordinances and to the insult of the evangelical life and the monastic state, but imitating your Jesus and God, (363) being indignant and dispassionately stirring yourself, exact vengeance for the commandments of God and the canons laid down by His apostles. Let there be for you, along with all things, precision in the examination of the thoughts of each one, so that you may know which of them require the assembly of those who pray and receive communion, and which require excommunication and repentance with tears and the station of the penitents, lest you make the church of God, instead of a holy temple, a den of thieves or a brothel, in ignorance or in knowledge through partiality, and you will not escape the fearsome judgment of the wrath of God for this.
For know that the eyewitnesses and disciples of the Word rightly assigned a fitting place to each of such persons. And it is necessary for you to apply yourself diligently to the reading of their ordinances and canons, so that you may know what are the hidden mysteries of those who believe in Christ, and not err by doing things that are not fitting for godliness. "You shall make your spiritual sons reverent," according to what is written, and you will teach them to have reverence for the sacred and divine places and vessels of the consecrated temple of God and for its liturgy, because it is written: "Blessed is the man who is in awe of all things through reverence." For, know this, the service of such things and the touching of them was dedicated by the fathers and apostles only to the ordained and to those purified by struggles and repentance with many tears, and to the most reverent (264) of the monks who have been sanctified and partake of the undefiled mysteries of Christ. You will not permit entrance to the divine bema to all who wish it, but only, as has been said, to the ordained and sanctified from among your more reverent brothers and fathers; but to the rest and to the brothers who walk disorderly, see what is said to you: you shall close it off to them. For many, know well, are cut off from the present life because of contempt for such things, and if you at all overlook this happening, the blood of those who are thus cut off from life will be required from your hands.
These things, O shepherd of Christ's sheep, and still more than these, which you ought to know precisely and to do diligently for the protection of your flock. Therefore, if you have known yourself to have reached such competence and to have been blessed with such gifts, so that from the light alone shining from you of good works and divine wisdom and knowledge, all who approach you, both your own and strangers, are enlightened, then shepherd boldly the sheep of Christ with the knowledgeable word of the grace given to you in practice, according to the rule and law previously delivered to you from above, and feed His lambs in the saving pastures of His commandments, until they grow and attain to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, and you will have (265) a great reward from Him for becoming one of His apostles
