deemed him worthy to become the father of a son. 6.2.11 They say that he often stood over the sleeping boy and bared his breast, and as if a divine spirit were consecrated within it, he kissed it reverently and considered himself blessed in his goodly child. They record that these and other things akin to them happened to Origen when he was a boy. 6.2.12 But when his father had been perfected by martyrdom, he was left desolate with his mother and six younger brothers, not yet a full seventeen years of age; 6.2.13 and when his father’s property was confiscated for the imperial treasury, and he was left with his family in want of the necessities of life, he was deemed worthy of God's providence and obtained both a welcome and repose from a certain woman, very wealthy in her living and in other respects most distinguished, who was nevertheless cherishing a very famous man of the heretics then in Alexandria; this man was an Antiochene by birth, and the said woman had him with her as an adopted son and held him in the highest regard. 6.2.14 But although Origen was obliged to associate with him, he gave clear proofs of his orthodoxy in the faith from that time, in that, although a great multitude not only of heretics but also of our own people gathered to him on account of the seeming skill in speech of Paul—for that was the man's name—he was never persuaded to join with him in prayer, keeping from a child the rule of the church and abominating, as he himself says somewhere in his own words, the teachings of the heresies. 6.2.15 Having been advanced by his father in Greek learning, and after his death having given himself entirely to training in literature with even greater eagerness, so as to have a moderate preparation in grammar, not long after his father's martyrdom, having devoted himself to these things, he was abundantly supplied with necessities for one of his age. 6.3.1 While he was occupied with study, as he himself somewhere relates in writing, and since no one in Alexandria was assigned to catechetical instruction, as all had been driven away by the threat of persecution, some of the Gentiles came to him to hear the word of God. 6.3.2 Of these he notes that the first was Plutarch, who after a good life was also adorned with divine martyrdom, and the second was Heraclas, the brother of Plutarch, who also himself gave ample proof in his company of a philosophical life and of asceticism, and was deemed worthy of the episcopate of Alexandria after Demetrius. 6.3.3 He was in his eighteenth year when he took charge of the catechetical school; in which he also prospered during the persecutions under Aquila, the governor of Alexandria, at which time he gained a very famous name among all those of the faith because of the welcome and zeal he showed toward all the holy martyrs, both unknown and known. 6.3.4 For he was not only with those who were in bonds, nor only with those being examined up to the final sentence, but also after this, with the holy martyrs as they were being led away to death, using great boldness and drawing near to the dangers; so that many times when he boldly approached and greeted the martyrs with a kiss with great boldness, the surrounding crowd of Gentiles grew enraged and nearly stoned him, had he not, 6.3.5 receiving the aid of the divine right hand once for all, miraculously escaped; and the same divine and heavenly grace, again and again, and it is impossible to say how many times, protected him when he was plotted against at that time on account of his excessive zeal and boldness concerning the word of Christ. So great indeed was the war of the unbelievers against him that they formed mobs and set soldiers around the house where he was staying, because of the multitude of those being instructed by him in the sacred faith. 6.3.6 And so daily the persecution against him blazed up, so that the whole city no longer had room for him, as he moved from house to house and was driven from everywhere, on account of the multitude of those who through him to the divine
