οὖσαν, πάντα δὲ φέρουσαν ὀρθῶς τὰ καθηρμηνευμένα καὶ τῇ τῶν ἑβδομήκοντα συνᾴδουσαν ἐκδόσει. εὗρον δ' αὐτὴν ἐς ὕστερον ἐν τῇ
Νικομηδείᾳ μετὰ τὴν ἄθλησιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς λαμπροὺς ἀγῶνας παρ' Ἰουδαίοις μένουσαν ἐν τοίχῳ κεκρυμμένην αὐτόν τε τοῦτον ἔχουσαν
τὸν μάρτυρα γραφέα· ἦν δὲ τῷ τότε βασιλεὺς ὁ μέγας Κωνσταντῖνος. Ἀρκούντως τοίνυν ἔχοντες τῶν ἀποδεδομένων ἐπὶ τοὺς τρόπους
ἔλθωμεν λοιπὸν τῆς προφητείας. ὁ μέν τις γὰρ τῶν προφητῶν τὸ μέλλον προφητεύει, ὁ δὲ συγγράφεται τὰ νῦν, ὁ δὲ τὰ παρελθόντα.
καὶ τούτων αὖθις ἕτερος συγκεκρυμμένως γράφει ὡς χρώμενος αἰνίγμασι καὶ τύποις καὶ συμβόλοις, ἄλλος τρανῶς καὶ καθαρῶς, ἄλλος
συγκεκραμένως, ἄλλος τοῦ λέγειν ἀποστὰς τόδε τι πρᾶγμα πράττει. εἰσὶ δὲ πάλιν ἕτεροι τρόποι τῶν τρόπων τούτων· ὁ μὲν γὰρ δι'
ὁράσεως δέχεται τὰς ἐλλάμψεις, ἕτερος δὲ δι' ἀκοῆς λαμβάνει τὰ πρακτέα, ἕτερος δ' ἐκ τῆς γεύσεως, ἕτερος δ' ἀλλαχόθεν. ταῦτα
δὲ πάντα νοητά, καὶ νοητῶς λεκτέον· τοσαῦται γὰρ καὶ τοῦ νοὸς τυγχάνουσιν αἰσθήσεις, ὅσας αἰσθήσεις οἴδαμεν τῷ σώματι προσούσας·
πᾶσαι δ' ὁράσεις λέγονται γενικωτέρῳ λόγῳ. ἐπισκεπτέον τοιγαροῦν τὰς τοῦ νοὸς αἰσθήσεις. «αὕτη» γὰρ «ὅρασις», φησίν, «ἣν εἶδεν
ὁ προφήτης», ὅρασις δὲ καὶ ∆ανιὴλ καὶ προφητῶν ἑτέρων. ἀκούει δ' Ἰεζεκιὴλ λαλοῦντος τοῦ κυρίου, «ἀνθρώπου» γὰρ «υἱέ», φησίν,
«ἄκουσον ἅπερ λέγω». σὺν τούτοις δὲ καὶ γεύεται τὴν θαυμασίαν γεῦσιν, αὐτίκα δ' ἐκ τῆς γεύσεως πληροῖ καὶ τὴν κοιλίαν, ὅτε
θεὸς ἐψώμισεν αὐτὸν τῇ κεφαλίδι. δεῖγμα δ' ὑπάρχει τῆς ἁφῆς Ναοὺμ τὸ θεῖον λῆμμα· θεοληψίαν γὰρ καλεῖ τὴν θείαν ὁμιλίαν ἣν
δήπερ προσωμίλησε τὸ πνεῦμα τῷ προφήτῃ, καθάπερ ἐπαφώμενον τῆς τούτου διανοίας καὶ ταύτῃ πλέον ἐντυποῦν τὴν γνῶσιν τῶν μελλόντων.
ὁ δὲ ∆αυὶδ σὺν τοῖς λοιποῖς ὀσφραίνεται καὶ μύρου. ἄλλα γὰρ ἄλλων προφητῶν πολλάκις ἐνεργούντων οὗτος δι' ὅλων ἔρχεται καὶ
τρόπων καὶ πραγμάτων· καὶ νῦν μὲν μνήμην δίδωσι τῶν παρεληλυθότων, νῦν δ' ἐκτυποῖ τὰ
