will be overthrown,” it was not in punishment, but in a threat that they seemed to be shaken and displaced, so that, a place for repentance being given, it might make those who ceased from what they were formerly doing to be outside the threat. In this way also Adam, as soon as he heard the voice of his wife who was deceived by the serpent, perceived a shaking from the lawgiver, as if to say: “The voice” of your feet “I heard walking,” perceiving him present and conversing before the transgression. 3.207 And indeed not departing from the Jews when they were genuinely keeping the law and serving the one who gave it, nor being left behind at all, he has proceeded with a threat in a shaking, saying about them: "I have forsaken my house, I have left my inheritance." And the forsaking is clearly presented, when Jesus says in the Gospel: “Behold, your house is left to you.” 3.208 The purpose and the end are shown to have been for the good of those who are forsaken, from what is added to: “And the Lord Almighty will go forth with the threat of his shaking,” “The Lord Almighty will shield them.” For when he seemed to depart in a threat, then he helped, putting forth his unconquerable shield for them, about which it is said in the Hymns to the one who receives blessings: “His truth will surround you with a shield.” 3.209 Since it was said just now that the Lord Almighty, sounding the trumpet piercingly and with a great voice, brings his benefactions, scriptural testimonies concerning this must be collected. 3.210 The Holy Spirit commands the herald of truth to raise his voice like a trumpet, so that the teaching which he brings forth may stir up to war those who campaign for God against those arrayed in battle, but also to summon them to the festive assemblies. 3.211 And the things concerning these matters are found in the divinely inspired oracles, sometimes enigmatically, and sometimes in historical narrative. 3.212 And in order that it may be shown that to sound the trumpet signifies manifestation, what was said by Jesus to those who wish to make a show of their beneficence to their neighbors is sufficient: “You,” he says, “when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you.” For he desires this virtue especially to be practiced in secret, because of the vainglory and love of praise that grows alongside it when it is performed openly, but also the commandment is transgressed which proclaims: "What you hate, do not do to another." For to make a show of the misfortune, so to speak, of those in need, is not pleasing to the one who receives the benefit, from which it follows that the giver himself does what he would not wish to suffer. 3.213 Therefore, when the Lord Almighty enlightens those who are benefited by him, making manifest what he bestows, he sounds a trumpet, shielding those who are well disposed, so that they may remain unplotted against and unharmed, surrounding them with the unconquerable shield, having put on the whole armor of their ruler and king. 3.214 May we also "put on the armor of light" and "take up the shield of faith," so as to say with boldness: "You are my helper and shield; my God, do not delay." 3.215 Zach. IX, 15-16: And they shall consume them and shall bury them with the stones of a sling and shall drink their blood like wine and shall fill the sacrificial bowls. And the Lord will save them in that day, as a flock his people, because holy stones are rolled upon his land. 3.216 When God has bent Judah like a bow, and has stirred up the sons of Zion against the children of the Greeks, theirs will be the victory, with the offspring of the Greeks being consumed by those stirred up against them, like the best slingers accurately casting stones, so that those who are stoned are buried, their blood being drunk very eagerly by those who sling, and filling sacrificial bowls. 3.217 When the sons of the Greeks suffer the things set forth, both to be buried with stones and to have their ... drunk up
