and you become prey for the spiritual beasts! Imitate a hare, if you cannot a dog, and acquire Christ the rock as your refuge (161) and hide yourself, where there is no fear, or as a deer go up to the mountains, escape the hands of the hunters or fly, like a good sparrow, and pass over all the snares! Consider holy love as wings, without which you will cross nowhere; imitate a colt carrying the creator, and become also an ox pulling the divine plow and cutting a sweet furrow of the word. Imitate all things except their opposites. The fox is evil, living in hypocrisy, being one thing and showing another, for by pretense it dies, so that it might seize something; the bear is terrible; for if it ever receives a wound by a sword, it does not cease scraping this wound, until it should die from it; the pig is evil, insatiably eating; the asp is evil, for it even stops up its ears; the evil things are evil; if you, dear soul, hasten to investigate them and to flee them, you will truly find the true wisdom. For by walking the way you would come to better things and with all of them understand yourself, and then when I ask you will surely say: The Word, which you speak, I myself also receive! It is also in you, and it passes over to me; or does it leave you empty of the Word? You will say: I know that it came also to me and it is wholly with you, just as before. How then, having been separated from you, did it come to me (162) and wholly remain in you, not separated from you? Tell me this and leave God be for now, lest all creation tremble and fall and shatter your thick flesh and crush your carnal soul and make your mind, the one that walks in vain into nothing useful, burnt with fire. For not even in reality nor in thought
