going out, stabbed them with their shuttles, and of the cooks in the marketplace, some snatched the cauldrons boiling with hot water from the 5..5 tripods and poured them down, while others pierced them through with spits. And when they had torn them to pieces and smashed their heads, so that even the brain flowed on the ground, they brought them outside the city, to where they were accustomed to throw the dead irrational animals; and having kindled a fire, they burned their bodies; and the remaining bones, as many as the fire had not consumed, they mixed with the bones of camels and donkeys that had been thrown there, so that finding them would not be easy. 5..6 However, it did not remain hidden for long; for a certain Christian woman, not being from Gaza, but having her dwelling here, according to a divine arrangement collected these things at night, and putting them in a pot, gave them to Zeno their cousin to keep. For thus God had revealed in dreams, and he pointed out the man to the woman where he was staying; and he showed him before she saw him, since he was unknown to her and 5..7 with the persecution having recently been stirred up, he was in hiding. For he himself also at that time had almost been seized by the Gazaeans and killed; but while the crowd was occupied with the murder of his cousins, finding an opportunity he fled to Anthedon, a city on the sea, distant from Gaza about twenty stades, which at that time similarly delighted in Hellenism and was frenzied in the worship of idols. 5..8 But having been informed against there as a Christian, he was terribly scourged on the back with rods by the Anthedonians and was driven out of the city; and having come to 5.. the port of the Gazaeans, he escaped notice hiding there. It was there that the woman, happening upon him, gave him the relics; and he for a time kept these at home; but when he was chosen to be bishop of the church there (and this happened during the reign of Theodosius), he built a house of prayer outside the city, and erected an altar in it, and deposited the bones of the martyrs near Nestor the confessor, who had been with his cousins while they were alive and, having been seized along with them by the people, had shared in bonds and 5..10 scourgings. But while he was being dragged, those dragging him, seeing that he had a beautiful body, took pity; and before the gates they threw him while he was still breathing, but expected to die; but some people picked him up and carried him to Zeno, 5..11 at whose place, while still being treated for his wounds and sores, he died. And the Gazaeans, considering the magnitude of their own daring deed, were very afraid, lest the emperor would not endure to leave them unpunished; for already a certain rumor was spreading, that he was taking it badly and was eager to decimate the populace. 5..12 But this was a falsehood and only a rumor, as is likely, a popular one circulating among the masses out of cowardice and the consciousness of what they had done, since not even—this indeed is what happened to the Alexandrians in the time of George—not even in 5..13 letters did he blame the Gazaeans. But he also deprived the governor of the province at that time of his office and held him in suspicion; and having made it an actionable offense, he considered it philanthropy not to sentence them to death; and he blamed him, because he had arrested and held in chains certain of the Gazaeans, who were said to have started the sedition and the murders, as they were about to be held accountable according to the laws; "For why," he says, "was it necessary for them to be led away, if they took revenge on a few Galileans, for the many wrongs they had done to them and to the gods?" And so these things are said. 5.10.1 And at this time Hilarion the monk also, being sought after by the Gazaeans, fled to Sicily. There indeed, gathering wood from the deserted mountains and carrying it on his shoulders, he sold it in the city; and in this 5.10.2 way he provided for his daily food, enough to live on. But having been revealed who and what sort of man he was by a demon-possessed man of the notable class, after delivering him from being possessed, he went to Dalmatia. And having accomplished very great and marvelous things there also with divine power, so as even to halt the sea with prayer when, from its retreat, 5.10.3 it was running to overwhelm the dry land, he again departed from there.
