saying to the father: Restore to me the joy of your salvation, so that you may also establish me with a governing and perfect spirit. And in both of these ways he speaks of spirit, either the holy, ruling and governing one, or the spirit of man that is in him, being other than the soul of man. And this governing spirit, according to the former interpretation, offers support and confirmation to whomsoever it comes. 546 Ps 50,15 And in the inscription of the psalm we were saying that God sometimes overlooks the diligent so that they commit sin, in order that by repenting in deed they might also display teaching concerning repentance. Behold, therefore, what was said is also confirmed here; for through confession to God he promises to teach the lawless the ways of God himself, so that setting foot on them, even if they were ever impious, they may turn back to him from their neglect. 547 Ps 50,15 For just as they have those who have succeeded as an imitation and example of an excellent life, so also those who have erred concerning knowledge have the one coming to repentance to imitate, being impious, turning back to God. 548 Ps 50,16a Since through the sins I committed leading to death I am full of blood, deliver me from these things, you who are God once for all and ours. And perhaps David also asks to be delivered by God from the [sins against] Uriah and if any others died with him, God being the God of his salvation. 549 Ps 50,16b.17 Our word, called "my tongue", by always speaking about your righteousness will rejoice in your righteousness. And God opens the lips of him who has received a word in the opening of his mouth, for which reason his mouth will also declare the praise of God, always praising and giving thanks to him. 550 Ps 50,20 He who is confessing his own sin, why does he wish to speak about Zion and Jerusalem? But since we said that he was not completely harmed by stumbling in the intense race, for this reason still having the prophetic state and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, he prays and prophesies saying "Do good to Zion in your good pleasure", which has come to be for your Son and draws near to the Spirit; but also the walls of Jerusalem are being built. And these are guards of angels or the establishment of indestructible dogmas. 551 Ps 50,21 He means the righteousness which is established through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. And this righteousness is an offering and spiritual burnt offerings, and that which is "Offer a sacrifice of righteousness"; but also they will offer upon the spiritual altar calves, farmers pulling plows, souls being none other than the souls of the martyrs seen beside the heavenly altar, being offered up upon it like calves. For in the Revelation of John the souls of those who had been beheaded for the name of Jesus and for his testimony have been seen under the heavenly altar.

552 Ps 51 αργ Who but the one must provide the occasion for so great a tragedy,

the herdsman of irrational beasts? For he was the chief herdsman of the mules. Therefore David, understanding his great wickedness, or the devil who stirred up envy in him, spoke the words of the psalm as if to one present. 553 Ps 51,3 β The name "day" here indicates a manifestation, or the whole time during which he commits lawlessness. 554 Ps 51,6 Words of submersion are those that bring punishment, with submersion signifying punishment, as also "But the lips of a fool submerge him." And so Doeg the Idumaean, interpreted truly as "earthly," being always shaken by being unsteady; for Doeg is interpreted as "agitation," who, having worked slander against the servants of God, loved a deceitful tongue and with it words that submerge him. And the Gospel indicates that submersion is punishment, saying to the one who causes one of the little ones in the church to stumble: "It is better to be submerged in the depth of the sea"
