TO ANASTASIUS THE MONK* (15B_450> Yesterday, on the eighteenth of the month, which was the holy Pentecost, the
patriarch declared to me, saying: Of which Church are you? Of Byzantium? Of Rome? Of Antioch? Of Alexandria?
Of Jerusalem? Behold, all of them, with the provinces under them, have been united. If, therefore, you are of the Catholic Church, be united, lest by innovating a strange path in life, you suffer what you do not expect.
To whom I said: The God of all declared the Catholic Church to be the right and saving confession of faith in Him, having blessed Peter for what he confessed well. But let me learn the confession upon which the union of all the Churches has occurred; and from that which is done well, I will not be estranged.
And they say: Even if we do not have an order concerning this, we speak so that you may be altogether without excuse. We speak of two energies because of the difference, and one because of the union.
Do you say that the two have become one because of the union, or, I said, another one besides these? No, they say, but the two are one because of the union. We are delivered from troubles, I said, having fashioned for ourselves a non-subsistent faith, and a God
who does not exist. For if we confuse the two into one because of the union, and again divide them into two because of the difference, there will be neither a monad nor a dyad of energies, as they are mutually destructive
always, and rendering Him to whom they belong without energy, and utterly non-existent.
For that which has no inalienable motion from its nature, and which is not altered or changed by any reason of turning, is deprived of all substance according to the Fathers, not having an energy essentially characterizing it. This, therefore, I cannot say, nor was I taught by the holy Fathers to confess. Do what seems good to you, who have the authority.
Therefore listen, they said: it seemed good to the master and to the patriarch, through a precept of the Pope of Rome, that you, being disobedient, should be anathematized and suffer the death appointed by them.
May what was ordained for me by God before all ages come to its fulfillment, bringing to Him the glory known before all ages, I replied to them, having heard this.
And that you might know, and make an addition of prayer and supplication to God, I have made manifest to you the things that were declared, beseeching the Lord Theius, and our holy fathers there with him, to make these things known, for the sake of the same cause.

πατριάρχης ἐδήλωσέ μοι λέγων· Ποίας Ἐκκλησίας εἶ; Βυζαντίου;Ῥώμης; Ἀντιοχείας Ἀλεξανδρείας;
