together. "They, seeing it thus, were amazed." For they ran together as if to make war; but when they saw the unconquerable nature of the one being warred against, they were astonished. "For they were troubled," he says, "they were shaken. [ζʹ, ηʹ.] Trembling took hold of them. -There were pains as of a woman in labor; with a violent wind you will shatter the ships of Tarshish." When they saw, he says, the unbreakable foundations of the Church, and understood the infallibility of the prophecy, they received fear and trembling, just as those who cross the surface of the sea and are struck by storms and expect complete destruction. For this reason, ceasing from warring and attacking, they themselves proclaim the power of the one being warred against, and they cry out: θʹ. "As we have heard, so have we seen; in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God." For not wishing to accept the prophecies concerning her, we have seen their truth through the events themselves. "God has established her forever." For His is the voice, "On this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." Thus having shown the change of the enemies, the prophetic word then foretells what kind of words those who have obtained salvation will use, hymning the benefactor. ιʹ. We have received, O God, your mercy in the midst of your people." We await, he says, this help from you, O Master, knowing the infallibility of your promises. For you said: "I am with you 80.1216 all the days, until the end of the age." ιαʹ. "According to your name, O God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth." The falsely named gods do not have power corresponding to their name; for they are not what they are called. But to your name, Master, follow the works proclaiming the truth of the name. For this reason, rightly is the hymn offered to you from the whole inhabited world. For as he is God of all, so by all is he hymned. "Your right hand is full of righteousness." For using a just decree, you scattered the enemies who rose up against us. ιβʹ. "Let mount Zion be glad, and let the daughters of Judea rejoice, because of your judgments, O Lord." He called Mount Zion those entrusted with the height of theology; and the daughters of Judea, the churches throughout the inhabited world, as having been founded by the apostles, who derived their lineage from the Jews. And he exhorts both those who preach and those who hear to be glad and rejoice, because of the just judgments of God, by which he wrought the salvation of the inhabited world. ιγʹ, ιδʹ. "Go around Zion, and encompass her, tell of it in her towers. Set your hearts on her power, and divide her palaces." Again he calls Zion the pious commonwealth, that is, the Church throughout the inhabited world. And her towers, those who have attained extreme virtue and imitate the life of the angels on earth, who like towers surround and guard her. And her palaces again, as we have already said before, the Churches divided throughout cities, and villages, and fields; for he speaks of the same and one, and many. Therefore the prophetic word, the grace of the most holy Spirit, exhorts those entrusted with the saving proclamation, to go about and run through, and both to support the towers with teaching, and to confirm her other power, and in addition to these to divide among themselves the care of the Churches; which indeed we have also said before in the forty-fifth psalm. For this he also exhorts here: "Divide her palaces;" so that this one might care for this Church, and that one for that, 80.1217 and for a husbandman to be set over each, providing the fitting care. And this he commands to be done not once, nor twice, but in every generation. For which reason he also added: "That you may tell it to another generation. [ιεʹ] For this is our God forever, and unto the age of the age. He will shepherd us forever." For it is necessary for each generation to hand down to the one after it what we have received from the former, so that in all generations
