it will be. Then every city will close its house so that no one may enter; for there will no longer be commonwealths such as now, in which the impious do their own things according to their desire. Often the word, having mentioned wine, has alluded to the luxury of men or the intoxication of wickedness and the torpor of the soul that turns the mind aside from right and natural reasonings; from which intoxication those who are then punished, as if sobering up, will utter voices and mournful cries. Therefore it is added: wail for the wine everywhere; all gladness has ceased. But after the things previously mentioned, the prophecy adds: all these things will be on the earth in the midst of the nations, clearly teaching that the things that have been said were spoken concerning the universal judgment. To which it adds: in the way that if one gleans an olive tree, so will they glean them, so that not one of the impious is left behind, but the judgment of God pursues them even to the last one. But instead of: and if the vintage ceases, these will cry out with a voice, Symmachus, using a punctuation mark, presented two thoughts at the same time, saying: as the gleanings, if the vintage is finished. Then, having stopped the thought at this point, he adds from another beginning, saying: these will raise their voice. So the first part is assigned to the former thought; for as those who gather the fruit of the olive tree are accustomed to knock and shake it down with sticks, even to the very last one if any should be left behind, and as after the vintage some people return and gather up a few individual grapes or the remaining clusters, in the same way they will also gather up the impious, to the last one, so that no one escapes the judgment of God. But those will suffer these things, while these will raise their voice; and who are these but those of the better order? Therefore Symmachus adds next: but these will raise their voice, they will rejoice when the Lord is glorified, but according to the interpretation of the Seventy, those who are to be delivered to punishment, having suffered the final vintage and been gathered up to the last one, will utter cries while being punished, but those who become God's portion will rejoice together with the glory of the Lord. For then the Lord himself will come “in the glory of his Father,” “with power and great glory.” Therefore, at this glory of their Lord, those who long ago had hoped in him will rejoice. But instead of: the water of the sea will be troubled, Theodotion translated it as the waters of the sea sounded, signifying the greatness of the shout, which those who glorify their Lord will use; for their voice will be compared to the sound of the sea. And the glory of the Lord will be in the islands, the churches, that is, those that were formerly among the unbelieving nations, as if enclosed in the midst of the sea, upon which the glory of the Lord will then shine. At these things the word hymns and proclaims God, who bestowed his glory on the islands. Therefore it says: Lord the God of Israel, from the wings of the earth we have heard wonders, Hope to the pious. But according to Symmachus and Theodotion: from the wings of the earth we have heard psalms, but according to Aquila: melodies; for those of God's portion, marveling at his just judgment, rejoice together with the glory of the Lord, and rejoicing they send up to him hymns and thanksgiving psalmodies.
