the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Sufficient, he says, 11.54 is even the gift of freedom in itself to show you the fruit of piety, but nevertheless out of generosity the gift-loving and munificent Lord also grants you eternal life, so that you may learn the difference between sin and righteousness. For the one 11.55 had death as its end, but the other, eternal life. Then after many things he shows the greatest of gifts: "For as many," he says, "as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing." 11.58 This man also wrote about the resurrection of bodies to the Corinthians and Thessalonians and Philippians and many others. And now, he says, "it is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised 11.59 a spiritual body." And again: "For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality." And again: "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body." 11.60 And the Lord Himself said to the Jews: "because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and 11.61 those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation." And again, relating things concerning the common end, he added these things also: "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn." And through these things he indicates the lament of those who had disbelieved. Then, 11.62 having told the parable about the virgins, and how some entered into the bridal chamber carrying their lamps, while the foolish were deprived of the bridal chamber, since their lamps were extinguished, and adding also the things about the talents and the diligent servants and the idle one who hid the talent and was sent into the outer darkness, 11.63 he continued: "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me

Ἀρκεῖ μέν, φησί, 11.54 καὶ αὐτὴ καθ' ἑαυτὴν ἡ τῆς ἐλευθερίας δωρεὰ τὸν τῆς εὐσεβείας ὑμῖν ἐπιδεῖξαι καρπόν, ἐκ φιλοτιμίας δὲ ὅμως ὁ φιλόδωρος καὶ μεγαλόδωρος Κύριος καὶ τὴν αἰώνιον ὑμῖν δωρεῖται ζωήν, ἵνα ἁμαρτίας καὶ δικαιοσύνης τὸ διάφορον καταμάθητε. Ἡ μὲν γὰρ 11.55 τέλος ἔσχε τὸν θάνατον, ἡ δὲ τὴν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον. Εἶτα μετὰ πλεῖστα καὶ τὸ μέγιστον ἐπιδείκνυσι τῶν δωρεῶν· "Ὅσοι γάρ" φησι "πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται, οὗτοί εἰσιν υἱοὶ Θεοῦ· οὐ γὰρ ἐλάβετε πνεῦμα δουλείας πάλιν εἰς φόβον, ἀλλ' ἐλάβετε πνεῦμα υἱοθεσίας, ἐν ᾧ κράζομεν Ἀββᾶ ὁ πατήρ· αὐτὸ τὸ πνεῦμα συμ μαρτυρεῖ τῷ πνεύματι ἡμῶν, ὅτι ἐσμὲν τέκνα Θεοῦ. Εἰ δὲ τέκνα, καὶ κληρονόμοι· κληρονόμοι μὲν Θεοῦ, συγκληρονόμοι δὲ 11.56 Χριστοῦ, εἴπερ συμπάσχομεν, ἵνα καὶ συνδοξασθῶμεν." Καὶ Γαλάταις δὲ ἐπιστέλλων τὰ παραπλήσια ἔφη· "Ὥστε οὐκέτι εἶ δοῦλος, ἀλλὰ υἱός· εἰ δὲ υἱός, καὶ κληρονόμος Θεοῦ διὰ Χρισ τοῦ." Καὶ Τιμοθέῳ δὲ τὴν αὐτὴν διάνοιαν γέγραφεν· "Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἰ γὰρ συναπεθάνομεν, καὶ συζήσομεν· εἰ ὑπομένομεν, 11.57 καὶ συμβασιλεύσομεν." Καὶ ἄλλην δὲ γράψας αὐτῷ ἐπιστολήν, καὶ ταῦτα ἐντέθεικεν· "Ἐγὼ γὰρ ἤδη σπένδομαι· καὶ ὁ καιρὸς τῆς ἀναλύσεώς μου ἐφέστηκεν. Τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα ἠγώνισμαι, τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα, τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα· λοιπὸν ἀπόκειταί μοι ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος, ὃν ἀποδώσει μοι ὁ Κύριος ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ δίκαιος κριτής, οὐ μόνον δὲ ἐμοί, ἀλλὰ καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς ἠγαπηκόσι τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ." 11.58 Οὗτος καὶ περὶ τῆς τῶν σωμάτων ἀναστάσεως καὶ Κορινθίοις καὶ Θεσσαλονικεῦσι καὶ Φιλιππησίοις καὶ πολλοῖς ἄλλοις ἐπέ στειλεν. Καὶ νῦν μέν, φησί, "σπείρεται ἐν φθορᾷ, ἐγείρεται ἐν ἀφθαρσίᾳ· σπείρεται ἐν ἀτιμίᾳ, ἐγείρεται ἐν δόξῃ· σπείρεται ἐν ἀσθενείᾳ, ἐγείρεται ἐν δυνάμει· σπείρεται σῶμα ψυχικόν, ἐγεί 11.59 ρεται σῶμα πνευματικόν." Αὖθις δέ· "Σαλπίσει γάρ, καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐγερθήσονται ἄφθαρτοι, καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀλλαγησόμεθα· δεῖ γὰρ τὸ φθαρτὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσασθαι ἀφθαρσίαν, καὶ τὸ θνητὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσασθαι ἀθανασίαν." Καὶ πάλιν· "Ἡμῶν δὲ τὸ πολίτευμα ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὑπάρχει· ἐξ οὗ καὶ σωτῆρα ἀπεκδεχόμεθα κύριον Ἰησοῦν, ὃς μετασχηματίσει τὸ σῶμα τῆς ταπεινώσεως ἡμῶν εἰς τὸ γενέσθαι αὐτὸ σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ." 11.60 Καὶ αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ Κύριος πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἔφη· "Ὅτι υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου ἐστί, μὴ θαυμάζετε τοῦτο· ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα, ἐν ᾗ πάντες οἱ ἐν τοῖς μνημείοις ἀκούσονται τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκπορεύσονται οἱ τὰ ἀγαθὰ ποιήσαντες εἰς ἀνάστασιν ζωῆς, οἱ 11.61 δὲ τὰ φαῦλα πράξαντες εἰς ἀνάστασιν κρίσεως." Καὶ πάλιν, τὰ περὶ τοῦ κοινοῦ διηγούμενος τέλους, καὶ ταῦτα προστέθεικεν· "Εὐθέως δὲ μετὰ τὴν θλίψιν τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐκείνων ὁ ἥλιος σκο τισθήσεται, καὶ ἡ σελήνη οὐ δώσει τὸ φέγγος αὐτῆς, καὶ οἱ ἀστέρες πεσοῦνται ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρα νῶν σαλευθήσονται· καὶ τότε φανήσεται τὸ σημεῖον τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ· καὶ τότε κόψονται πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς." ∆ιὰ δὲ τούτων δηλοῖ τῶν ἠπιστηκότων τὸν θρῆνον. Εἶτα 11.62 τὴν περὶ τῶν παρθένων παραβολὴν εἰπών, καὶ ὡς αἱ μὲν εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸν νυμφῶνα φέρουσαι τὰς λαμπάδας, αἱ δὲ μωραὶ τῆς παστά δος ἀπεστερήθησαν, ἐπειδήπερ αἱ λαμπάδες ἐσβέσθησαν, προσθεὶς δὲ καὶ τὰ τῶν ταλάντων καὶ τῶν οἰκετῶν τῶν σπουδαίων καὶ τοῦ ἀργοῦ τοῦ τὸ τάλαντον κατακρύψαντος καὶ τῷ ἐξωτάτῳ σκότει 11.63 παραπεμφθέντος, ἐπήγαγεν· "Ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώ που ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἅγιοι ἄγγελοι αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτοῦ, τότε καθήσεται ἐπὶ θρόνου δόξης αὐτοῦ, καὶ συναχθήσονται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη. Καὶ ἀφορίσει αὐτοὺς ἀπ' ἀλλή λων, ὥσπερ ὁ ποιμὴν ἀφορίζει τὰ πρόβατα ἀπὸ τῶν ἐρίφων· καὶ στήσει τὰ μὲν πρόβατα ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ, τὰ δὲ ἐρίφια ἐξ εὐωνύ μων. Τότε ἐρεῖ ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῖς ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ· δεῦτε οἱ εὐλο γημένοι τοῦ πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου· ἐπείνασα γάρ, καὶ ἐδώκατέ
