me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you welcomed me; naked, and you clothed me; sick, and you visited me; 11.64 I was in prison, and you came to me." But when they said they had never done any of these things—for it is characteristic of the athletes of virtue to be modest and to hide their wealth— "the King," he says, "will say to them: Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren who believe in me, you did it to me." Thus having proclaimed them and having given them the rewards for their labors, "he will say," he says, "also to those on the left: Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." 11.65 And he makes clear to these also the reasons for their punishments; for none of them did what the choir of the just accomplished, and they do not even emulate their utmost piety. For the former, having done all those things, denied it; but the latter, though they have not done them, say that they have; but they will receive their refutation and will be handed over to punishment. 11.66 Compare these things, o men, with the lauded words of Plato. For the rest of the nonsense, both of him and of the others, is indeed worthy of that darkness; but what we also praised, 11.67 has a certain kinship with these things. For he too agreed that the punishments and the rewards for the good exist, and he pointed to the divine oracles, both the new and the old; but he introduced other judges, Aeacus and Minos and Rhadamanthus, men not praised in all things, and indeed some bring many charges against Minos; but we await as judge our own maker, one who precisely understands the nature which he fashioned and who knows of it not only the deeds and words, but also the very movements of the mind. And he will judge 11.68 clothed in the garment of our nature; for invisible is the nature of the Godhead. For this reason he also called himself Son of Man, since those being judged behold this nature. Wherefore also the divine apostle, speaking publicly in Athens, spoke thus: "God, therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, having furnished proof to all by raising him from the dead." 11.69 But if anyone disbelieves what is said and considers the words of the apostles nonsense, let him learn their truth from this. Many things concerning the future life both the Lord Christ and his heralds foretold; and they also prophesied certain other things, in no way pertaining to that life, but to this one. Examine, therefore, o men, the prophecies that have come to pass concerning this life; and if you find them to be true and clearly corresponding with events, accept 11.70 without dispute those things that have been prophesied concerning the things to come. And this should be considered in some such way as this: the Lord Christ foretold the siege of Jerusalem, and that that famous temple would be utterly destroyed, and that the race of those who crucified him would be scattered throughout the whole world. Let us see, then, if the word has not received its 11.71 fulfillment. And concerning the Jews, I do not think you will dispute; for they have been driven out of that city and have become sojourners of the world; but the desolation of the temple and its destruction from its foundations, let those of you who have seen it truthfully confess, and the rest of you, believe those who relate it. For I myself have been, I suppose, an eyewitness of that desolation, and the prophecy, which I had received with my ears, I beheld with my eyes, and I both hymned and worshipped the truth. 11.72 That this word, then, is true, the facts cry out, using the loudest voice; but let us seek the fulfillment of another prophecy as well. The Lord Christ foretold to the apostles the struggles and the dangers which they were about to suffer, while bringing the teaching to both 11.73 Gentiles and Jews; "For 'behold,'" he said to them, "'I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of

Ἐκείνων δὲ φάντων μηδέν τι τούτων πώποτε δεδρακέναι-ἴδιον γὰρ τὸ μετριάζειν τῶν τῆς ἀρετῆς ἀθλητῶν καὶ κατακρύπτειν τὸν πλοῦτον- "ἐρεῖ" φησι "πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ βασιλεύς· ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐφ' ὅσον ἐποιήσατε ἑνὶ τούτων τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου τῶν ἐλαχίστων τῶν πιστευόντων εἰς ἐμέ, ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε." Οὕτω τούτους ἀνακηρύ ξας καὶ δεδωκὼς τὰ γέρα τῶν πόνων, "ἐρεῖ" φησι "καὶ τοῖς ἐξ εὐωνύμων· πορεύεσθε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ οἱ κατηραμένοι εἰς τὸ πῦρ τὸ αἰώνιον τὸ ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ." 11.65 ∆ήλας δὲ καὶ τούτοις τῶν τιμωριῶν τὰς αἰτίας ποιεῖ· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἔδρασεν ἐκείνων, ἃ τῶν δικαίων ἐπετέλεσεν ὁ χορός, καὶ οὐδὲ τὴν ἐσχάτην ἐκείνων ζηλοῦσιν εὐλάβειαν. Ἐκεῖνοι μὲν γάρ, πάντα ἐκεῖνα πεποιηκότες, ἠρνήθησαν· οὗτοι δέ, καὶ μὴ δεδρα κότες, πεποιηκέναι φασίν· ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸν ἔλεγχον δέξονται καὶ τῇ τιμωρίᾳ παραδοθήσονται. 11.66 Ταῦτα, ὦ ἄνδρες, παραβάλετε τοῖς ἐπαινουμένοις τοῦ Πλά τωνος λόγοις. Τὰς γάρ τοι κολάσεις καὶ τὰς τῶν ἀγαθῶν ἀντιδόσεις κἀκεῖνος εἶναι ξυνωμολόγησε, καὶ τὰ θεῖα ἐπέδειξε λόγια, καὶ τὰ καινὰ καὶ τὰ παλαιά· δικαστὰς δὲ ἐκεῖνος μὲν ἑτέρους εἰσήγαγε, τὸν Αἰακὸν καὶ τὸν Μίνω καὶ τὸν Ῥαδά μανθυν, ἄνδρας οὐδὲ πάντα ἐπαινουμένους, τοῦ δὲ Μίνω καὶ πολλὰ ἄττα κατηγοροῦσί τινες· ἡμεῖς δὲ προσμένομεν δικαστὴν τὸν ἡμέτερον ποιητήν, τὸν καὶ τὴν φύσιν, ἣν ἔπλασεν, ἀκριβῶς ἐπιστάμενον καὶ ταύτης οὐ μόνον τὰς πράξεις καὶ τοὺς λόγους γινώσκοντα, ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτὰ τὰ τῆς ἐννοίας κινήματα. ∆ικάσει 11.68 δὲ τὴν τῆς ἡμετέρας φύσεως στολὴν περικείμενος· ἀόρατος γὰρ ἡ τῆς θεότητος φύσις. Τῷ τοι καὶ υἱὸν ἀνθρώπου ἑαυτὸν προση γόρευσεν, ἐπειδὴ ταύτην οἱ κρινόμενοι θεωροῦσι τὴν φύσιν. ∆ιὸ δὴ καὶ ὁ θεῖος ἀπόστολος ἐν Ἀθηναίοις δημηγορῶν οὕτως ἔφη· "Τοὺς μὲν οὖν χρόνους τῆς ἀγνοίας ὑπεριδὼν ὁ Θεὸς τὰ νῦν παραγγέλλει πᾶσι πανταχοῦ μετανοεῖν, καθότι ἔστησεν ἡμέραν, ἐν ᾗ μέλλει κρίνειν τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ, ἐν ἀνδρί, ᾧ ὥρισε, πίστιν παρασχὼν πᾶσιν, ἀναστήσας αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν." 11.69 Εἰ δέ τις ἀπιστεῖ τοῖς λεγομένοις καὶ λῆρον ἡγεῖται τῶν ἀποστόλων τὰ ῥήματα, τῇδε μαθέτω τὴν τούτων ἀλήθειαν. Πολλὰ περὶ τοῦ μέλλοντος βίου καὶ ὁ δεσπότης Χριστὸς καὶ οἱ τούτου γε κήρυκες προηγόρευσαν· ἐθέσπισαν δὲ καὶ ἄλλα ἄττα, ἐκείνῳ μὲν οὐδαμῶς, τῷδε δὲ τῷ βίῳ προσήκοντα. Ἐξετάσατε τοίνυν, ὦ ἄνδρες, τὰς τοῦδε πέρι γεγενημένας προρρήσεις· κἂν εὕρητε ἀληθεῖς καὶ τοῖς πράγμασιν ἐναργῶς ξυμβαινούσας, δέξασθε 11.70 ἀδηρίτως ἐκεῖνα τὰ περὶ τῶν μελλόντων τεθεσπισμένα. Τοῦτο δὲ ὧδέ πῃ διασκεπτέον· τὴν τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων ὁ δεσπότης Χριστὸς προεῖπε πολιορκίαν, καὶ ὡς ὁ νεὼς ἐκεῖνος ὁ περιβόητος ἄρδην καταλυθήσεται, καὶ ὡς εἰς ἅπασαν τὴν οἰκουμένην τὸ τῶν ἐσταυ ρωκότων αὐτὸν κατασπαρήσεται γένος. Ἴδωμεν τοίνυν, εἰ μὴ τὸ 11.71 πέρας ὁ λόγος ἐδέξατο. Καὶ περὶ μὲν Ἰουδαίων οὐκ οἶμαι ὑμᾶς ἀμφισβητήσειν· ἐκείνης τε γὰρ τῆς πόλεως ἐξελήλανται καὶ τῆς οἰκουμένης γεγένηνται μέτοικοι· τοῦ νεὼ δὲ καὶ τὴν ἐρημίαν καὶ τὴν ἐκ βάθρων κατάλυσιν οἱ μὲν τεθεαμένοι φιλαλήθως ὁμολο γήσατε, οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ τοῖς διηγουμένοις πιστεύσατε. Αὐτόπτης γάρ που κἀγὼ τῆς ἐρημίας ἐκείνης γεγένημαι, καὶ τὴν πρόρρησιν, ἣν ταῖς ἀκοαῖς ἐδεξάμην, ἐθεασάμην τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν ὕμνησά τε καὶ προσεκύνησα. 11.72 Ὅτι μὲν οὖν ἀψευδὴς οὗτος ὁ λόγος, τὰ πράγματα βοᾷ, μεγίστῃ κεχρημένα φωνῇ· ἐπιζητήσωμεν δὲ καὶ ἄλλης προφητείας τὸ πέρας. Προεῖπε τοῖς ἀποστόλοις ὁ δεσπότης Χριστὸς τοὺς ἀγῶνας καὶ τοὺς κινδύνους, οὓς ἔμελλον πείσεσθαι, καὶ τοῖς 11.73 ἔθνεσι καὶ Ἰουδαίοις τὴν διδασκαλίαν προσφέροντες· "Ἰδοὺ" γὰρ ἔφη πρὸς αὐτοὺς "ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρόβατα ἐν μέσῳ
