DISCOURSE 68. Concerning that it is necessary to honor virtue and punish vice. (15Ε_470> John 5. those who have done good will come out to the resurrection
of life; but those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. 2 Peter 2. The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation; but the unrighteous
to keep for the day of judgment to be punished. Proverbs 22. A clever man, seeing a wicked man punished, himself is mightily
instructed. Sirach 10. It is not right to dishonor a wise poor man, and it is not fitting to glorify
a sinner. Basil. If the prudent see the wicked dishonored, much
more eagerly will they hold to virtue. Let another, therefore, be bold and noble concerning these things; or rather, let no one be.
But I hesitate to give to vice the punishment hence of all, or to piety, relief. But there are times when it is also for some useful purpose, either when vice is cut off, the suffering of the wicked; or when virtue's way is being prepared, the well-being of the better; but not always, nor in every case; but this is only for the time to come, in which some will receive the prizes of virtue, and others the penalties of vice.
Chrysostom. Give to the one in need, and do not give to the dancer, so that you do not destroy his soul along with your money (15Ε_472>. For you are the cause of his destruction, through ill-timed love of honor. For if those in the orchestra knew that their occupation was going to be unprofitable, they would long ago have ceased practicing these things.
Isaiah 3. He who spares the wicked wrongs the good. As many as punish the wrongdoers, these prevent others from being wronged. He who honors virtue honors the first truth, and especially as of all good
ruling. Solon.Solon the wise said that city is best governed in which the
good happen to be honored; and worst governed, in which the wicked are. Sextus. Two principles move a man to the care of God: punishment
for impiety, and rewards for a pious mind. Vice, when praised, becomes unbearable. Procopius the Rhetor. When virtue is not honored, vice speaks boldly. 1012 Philo. If you wish to be doubly esteemed, both those who do best
prefer, and rebuke those who do worse things. Socrates. Being asked which city is best governed, he said, The one living with law,
and prosecuting the wrongdoers. DISCOURSE 69. Concerning self-love. (15Ε_474> John 12. He who loves his life will lose it; and he who
hates it in this world will keep it for eternal life. 2 Corinthians 10. Not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord
commends. Philippians 2. All seek their own interests, not those of Christ. Sirach 37. Child, in your life test your soul, and see what is bad
for it, and do not give it to it; for not all things are profitable for all.

Ἀλλ᾿ ἔστι μέν ὅτε καί πρός τι χρήσιμον, ἤ κακίας ἐγκοπτομένης, δυσπάθεια τῶν πονηρῶν· ἤ ἀρετῆς ὁδοποιουμένης, εὐπάθεια τῶν βελτιόνων· οὐκ ἀεί δέ, οὐδέ πάντως· ἀλλ᾿ εἶναι τοῦτο μόνον καιροῦ τοῦ μέλλοντος, καθ᾿ ὅν οἱ μέν τά τῆς ἀρετῆς ἆθλα, οἱ δέ τά τῆς κακίας ἐπιτίμια δέξονται.
Χρυσοστ. ∆ός τῷ δεομένῳ, καί μή δῷς τῷ ὀρχουμένῳ, ἵνα μή μετά τῶν σῶν χρημάτων καί τήν ψυχήν (15Ε_472> ἀπολέσῃς τήν ἐκείνου. Σύ γάρ αἴτιος εἶ τῆς ἐκείνου ἀπωλείας, διά τῆς ἀκαίρου φιλοτιμίας.
