If you see the one guiding you working miracles and being glorified, believe and rejoice and give thanks to God that you have obtained such a teacher; but do not be scandalized by the envious when you see him dishonored, perhaps even being struck and dragged, but like the fervent Peter take the sword and, stretching out your hand, cut off not only the ear but also the hand and the tongue of the one attempting to speak against your father or to touch him. And if you are rebuked like he was, you will surely be praised even more on account of your great love and faith. And if, frightened as a man, you should say: "I do not know the man," but weep again bitterly after this (279) for this and do not be swallowed by despair; and I am persuaded that he will be the first to draw you to himself. And if you see him being crucified as a criminal and suffering at the hands of criminal men, if possible, die with him; but if not, do not be added to the wicked as wicked and a traitor, nor share with them in innocent blood, but as a coward and faint-hearted, having for a short time abandoned the shepherd, keep your faith in him. If he is released from his bonds, approach again and reverence him more as a martyr; but if he dies along with his temptations, with boldness seek his body and honor it much more than when you stood by him while he was alive, and having anointed it with myrrh, bury it lavishly. For even if not on the third day, yet at the last he will rise again with all. But believe that he stands before God with boldness even if you have laid his body in the tomb, and without hesitation invoke his intercession; and he will help you here and will guard you from all adversaries, and will receive you when you depart from the body and will prepare for you the one eternal.
If after all the things said before, having called you aside privately, he should urge you to be still and say: "Sit here without going out until you are clothed with power from on high," obey with firm hope and unfulfilled joy. (280) Without deceit, my brother, and true is such a teacher. For the same power of the All-Holy Spirit will come upon you even now, not appearing sensibly in the form of fire nor with a great sound and a violent wind—for these things happened then for the unbelievers—but in the form of noetic light with all peace and gladness it will be seen by you noetically, which is a prelude of the eternal and first light and is a radiance and splendor of the everlasting blessedness. When this, therefore, appears, every passionate thought vanishes and every passion of the soul is driven away, every bodily sickness receives its healing. Then the eyes of the heart are cleansed, and they see that which is written in the beatitudes. Then the soul, seeing as in a mirror even its own small faults, is brought down into an abyss of humility, and perceiving the magnitude of the glory is filled with all joy and gladness, and being astonished at the unexpectedness of the wonder releases springs of tears. And so the man is wholly changed and knows God and is first known by Him. For this alone makes a man despise all things earthly and heavenly, things present and to come, things sorrowful and joyful, and makes him at once a friend of God and a son of the Most High and a God, as far as is possible for men.
These things, therefore, I have written to your love, so that what you once requested from my wretchedness, you may have these things in writing and read them whenever you wish. (281) And if you also believe that providentially and for your benefit these things through us the All-Holy

Ἐάν ἴδῃς τόν ὁδηγοῦντά σε θαυματουργοῦντα καί δοξαζόμενον, πίστευσον καί εὐφράνθητι καί τῷ Θεῷ εὐχαρίστησον ὅτι τοιούτου διδασκάλου τετύχηκας, μή σκανδαλισθῇς δέ παρά τῶν φθονούντων ὁρῶν ἀτιμαζόμενον αὐτόν, ἴσως καί ῥαπιζόμενον καί συρόμενον, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς θερμός Πέτρος λάβε τήν μάχαιραν καί τήν χεῖρα ἐκτείνας, μή τό ὠτίον μόνον ἀλλά καί τήν χεῖρα καί τήν γλῶσσαν ἀπόκοψον τοῦ ἐπιχειροῦντος λέγειν κατά τοῦ σοῦ πατρός ἤ αὐτοῦ ἅπτεσθαι. Εἰ δέ καί ἐπιτιμηθῇς ὡς ἐκεῖνος, πάντως καί μειζόνως ἐπαινεθήσει τῆς πολλῆς ἀγάπης καί πίστεως ἕνεκα. Κἄν σταυρούμενον ἴδῃς αὐτόν ὡς κακοῦργον καί παρά κακούργων ἀνθρώπων πάσχοντα, εἰ δυνατόν συναπόθανον· εἰ δέ μή, μή προστεθῇς τοῖς κακοῖς ὡς κακός καί προδότης, μηδέ κοινωνήσῃς μετ᾿ αὐτῶν ἀθώου αἵματος, ἀλλ᾿ ὡς δειλός καί μικρόψυχος βραχύ τι τόν ποιμένα καταλιπών, τήν εἰς αὐτόν πίστιν φύλαξον. Ἐάν ἀφεθῇ τῶν δεσμῶν, πάλιν πρόσελθε καί ὡς μάρτυρα πλεῖον σεβάσθητι· εἰ δέ συναποθάνῃ τοῖς πειρασμοῖς, τό σῶμα αὐτοῦ παρρησιαζόμενος ζήτησον καί τίμησον περισσότερον μᾶλλον ἤ ὅτε ἐμψυχωμένῳ παρίστασο, καί μύροις ἀλείψας πολυτελῶς ἐνταφίασον. Εἰ γάρ καί μή τριήμερος, ἀλλ᾿ ἔσχατος μετά πάντων ἐξαναστήσεται. Πίστευε δέ ὅτι μετά παρρησίας παρίσταται τῷ Θεῷ κἄν τῷ τάφῳ το σῶμα τούτου κατέθηκας καί ἀδιστάκτως ἐπικαλοῦ τήν πρεσβείαν αὐτοῦ· καί βοηθήσει σοι ἐνταῦθα καί ἐκ πάντων φυλάξει σε τῶν ἐναντίων, καί ὑποδέξεταί σε ἐν τῷ ἐκδημεῖν σε ἀπό τοῦ σώματος καί μόνην αἰωνίαν ἑτοιμάσει σοι.
Ἐάν μετά τά προειρημένα ἅπαντα κατ᾿ ἰδίαν καλέσας σε, ἡσυχάσαι προτρέψηται καί εἴπῃ· "Καθέζου ὧδε ἀπρόϊτος ἕως οὗ ἐνδύσῃ δύναμιν ἐξ ὕψους", μετ᾿ ἐλπίδος βεβαίας καί χαρᾶς ἀπληρώτου ἐπάκουσον. (280) Ἀψευδής, ἀδελφέ μου, καί ἀληθινός ὑπάρχει ὁ τοιοῦτος διδάσκαλος. Ἐπελεύσεται γάρ ἡ ἴση τοῦ Παναγίου Πνεύματος ἐπί σέ καί νῦν δύναμις, οὐκ ἐν εἴδει πυρός αἰσθητῶς φαινομένη οὐδέ μετά ἤχου πολλοῦ καί πνοῆς βιαίας - ταῦτα γάρ διά τούς ἀπίστους τότε γεγόνασιν , ἀλλ᾿ ἐν εἴδει φωτός νοητοῦ μετά πάσης γαλήνης καί θυμηδίας νοερῶς σοι ὀφθήσεται, ὅπερ προοίμιόν ἐστι τοῦ αἰωνίου καί πρώτου φωτός καί ἀπαύγασμα καί λαμπηδών ὑπάρχει τῆς ἀϊδίου μακαριότητος. Τούτου τοίνυν φανέντος πᾶς ἐμπαθής λογισμός ἀφανίζεται καί πᾶν πάθος ψυχικόν ἀπελαύνεται, πᾶσα νόσος σωματικήν τήν ἴασιν δέχεται. Τότε οἱ ὀφθαλμοί τῆς καρδίας καθαίρονται, καί ὁρῶσιν ὅπερ ἐν τοῖς μακαρισμοῖς γέγραπται. Τότε ὡς ἐν ἐσόπτρῳ βλέπουσα ἡ ψυχή καί τά μικρά ἑαυτῆς σφάλματα εἰς ἄβυσσον καταφέρεται ταπεινώσεως, καί τῆς δόξης κατανοοῦσα τό μέγεθος πάσης χαρᾶς καί εὐφροσύνης ἐμπίπλαται, καί τό παρ᾿ ἐλπίδα τοῦ θαύματος ἐκπληττομένη πηγάς δακρύων ἀφίησι. Καί οὕτως ὅλως ἀλλοιοῦται ὁ ἄνθρωπος καί γινώσκει Θεόν καί ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ γινώσκεται πρῶτον. Αὕτη γάρ μόνη πάντων ἐπιγείων καί οὐρανίων, ἐνεστώτων τε ὁμοῦ καί μελλόντων, θλιβερῶν τε καί χαροποιῶν, ποιεῖ καταφρονεῖν τόν ἄνθρωπον, ὅν καί φίλον ἅμα Θεῷ καί υἱόν Ὑψίστου καί Θεόν, ὅσον ἐφικτόν ἀνθρώποις, αὐτόν ἀπεργάζεται.
Ταῦτα τοιγαροῦν ἔγραψα τῇ ἀγάπῃ σου, ἵνα ἅπερ ἠξίους πρός ἅπαξ παρά τῆς ἐμῆς ἀθλιότητος, ταῦτα ἔχων ἐγγράφως ἀναγινώσκεις ὅτε θελήσειας. (281) Ἐάν δέ καί πιστεύσῃς οἰκονομικῶς σοι καί συμφερόντως ταῦτα δι᾿ ἡμῶν τό Πανάγιον
