wolves." And again: "They will hand you over to the councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you, and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles." And a little later: "Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But he who endures to the end will be saved." 11.74 And again: "If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they call those of his household?" And again: "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's enemies will be the members of his household." 11.75 Each of these things, O beloved, it is possible to see fulfilled in deed. For amid these dangers the apostles enlightened the world, and those after them guarded the faith which they had received; and the tombs of the martyrs bear witness, shining everywhere on land and sea and proclaiming the truth of the divine prophecies. For he foretold to them not only the dangers, but also 11.76 the victory. "For on this," he said, "rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." It is possible to see households divided according to the prophecy; for either the men, captured by the faith, contend with their still unbelieving wives, or the wives, having accepted the yoke of piety, strive to ensnare their still wandering husbands. And the necessary division works out a praiseworthy union. 11.77 And, to leave aside the other prophecies, a certain woman brought an alabaster jar of ointment to his holy feet. Accepting her faith, he said to the company of the disciples: "Amen I say to you, wherever this gospel of the kingdom is preached, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her." And it is possible to see this prophecy being fulfilled even now; for everywhere on land and sea the divine gospel is read, and the woman's faith is proclaimed. 11.78 Since, therefore, the Master foretold these things and prophesied the things that would happen in that life, and we see their truth openly, let us also receive those other things without dispute, being led to them by what has already happened and using 11.79 these as proofs of those. For for this very reason he foretold both these things and those, that through these he might confirm those. And honors, which he did not promise, he generously bestowed upon those who believed in him; and not only to the living did he give very great distinction, but also to those who died nobly he allotted the greatest reverence, so that through what he did not promise, but gave, we might believe 11.80 what he did promise. For he who gave gifts not included in the covenants and in generosity surpassed his promises will surely give what he promised, and the prizes he showed to the contestants. For it would be dreadful for gymnasiarchs to provide athletes the promised reward, and for those who hire some for a task to fulfill the agreements after the labor, but for the Creator of all things, who through goodness alone both gave being to non-beings and accomplished the mystery of the economy and bestowed the light of the knowledge of God on those who do not see, for him, to say that he will not fulfill his own promises. 11.81 But if the promise is true, as indeed it is true—for it is divine—the lessons of the divine teaching are not without profit, O dear men. For he promised to those who obey the kingdom of heaven and a life that does not accept an end and intellectual light and the dance with the incorporeal beings, just as he also threatened eternal punishment to those who disbelieve; 11.82 for he has made this clear in the parable of the tares. For having interpreted this, he added: "So it will be at the close of this age; the Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of the
