they might find, though He is not far from each one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said: "3For we are also His offspring."3 7.40 Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the divine is like gold, or silver, or stone, a graven thing of art and man's device. The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked, but now He commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has fixed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all, by raising Him from the dead," saying nothing to these beyond what he had formerly said to the believers from among the Jews and Greeks, that God, being uncircumscribed and all-powerful, will judge the world in righteousness in the man whom He raised from the dead as a pledge to all men, appointing Him judge of all. Likewise the Apostle said of Him, "And He made Him sit at His right hand," and John the Baptist likewise said the winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will separate the wheat from the chaff, handing over to punishments the sinners who are like chaff separated from the wheat. 7.41 Whence some of them believed, as it is written, but some "mocked when they heard of the resurrection of the dead"; and some again said, "What would this babbler say?" as if he were digging up our seeds; but others said, "We will hear you again about this"; and again others, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities, because, says Luke, he preached Jesus and the resurrection"; and again others, "May we know what this new teaching is that you are speaking?" And, to put it simply, most of them mocked Paul for discoursing at all about the resurrection of the dead. 7.42 And when Paul, being accused by the Jews, stood before the tribunal before Festus the governor and Agrippa the king, to relate the power of what had been done beforehand, Festus said to Agrippa that "they have certain questions" against each other "about their own superstition," both Paul and the Jews, "and about a certain Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive"; Paul, having been permitted by them, cried out with boldness and a loud voice, "Concerning which hope I am accused by the Jews, O king, why is it judged incredible among you if God raises the dead?" Then again: "For this reason, they seized me while I was in the temple and tried to kill me. Having therefore obtained help from God, I stand to this day, testifying both to small and great, saying nothing beyond what both the prophets and Moses said would happen: that the Christ must suffer, that as the first from the resurrection of the dead, He would proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles." 7.43 Likewise again, when urged by them to speak to the unbelieving Jews themselves in Antioch of Pisidia, what does he say? "Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen: The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people in their sojourn in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm He brought them out of it, and for about a forty-year period He put up with them in the wilderness, and having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave them their land as an inheritance for about four hundred and fifty years; and after these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet; and from there they asked for a king, and He gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years; and having removed him He raised up David for them as king, to whom also He testified and said, "3I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will."3. 7.44 From this man's seed God, according to His promise, brought to Israel salvation, John having proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was finishing his course, he said: 'What do you suppose that I am? Ἐν αὐτῷ γὰρ ζῶμεν καὶ κινούμεθα καὶ ἐσμέν, ὡς καί τινες τῶν καθ' ὑμᾶς ποιητῶν εἰρήκασι· "3Τοῦ γὰρ καὶ γένος ἐσμέν."3 7.40 Γένος οὖν ὑπάρχοντες τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐκ ὀφείλομεν νομίζειν χρυσίῳ, ἢ καὶ ἀργυρίῳ, ἢ λίθῳ, χαράγματι τέχνης καὶ ἐνθυμήσεως ἀνθρώπου, τὸ θεῖον εἶναι ὅμοιον. Τοὺς μὲν οὖν χρόνους τῆς ἀγνοίας ὑπεριδὼν ὁ Θεὸς τὰ νῦν παραγγέλλει πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις πανταχοῦ μετανοεῖν, καθότι ἔστησεν ἡμέραν ἐν ᾗ μέλλει κρίνειν τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ, ἐν ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὥρισε, πίστιν παρασχὼν πᾶσιν, ἀναστήσας αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν", οὐδὲν ἐκτὸς καὶ τούτοις εἰπών, ὧν πρώην τοῖς πιστεύσασιν ἐξ Ἰουδαίων καὶ Ἑλλήνων εἶπεν, ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἀπερίγραφος ὑπάρχων καὶ παντοδύναμος, ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἄνδρα εἰς πίστωσιν πάντων ἀνθρώπων, ἐν αὐτῷ κρινεῖ τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ, αὐτὸν ὁρίσας κριτὴν τοῦ παντός. Ὁμοίως εἶπε περὶ αὐτοῦ ὁ μὲν Ἀπόστολος· "Καὶ ἐκάθισεν αὐτὸν ἐν δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ", ὁ δὲ Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστὴς ὁμοίως πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ εἶπε, καὶ ἀφοριεῖ τὸν σῖτον ἀπὸ τῶν ἀχύρων παραδιδοὺς τιμωρίαις τοὺς ἁμαρτωλοὺς τοὺς δίκην ἀχύρων ἀπὸ διακρίσεως τοῦ σίτου ὑπάρχοντας. 7.41 Ὅθεν τινὲς μὲν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπίστευσαν, καθὼς γέγραπται, τινὲς δὲ καὶ "ἐχλεύαζον ἀνάστασιν νεκρῶν ἀκούοντες"· καί τινες πάλιν ἔλεγον· "Τί ἂν θέλοι λέγειν ὁ σπερμολόγος οὗτος;" ὡσανεὶ ὁ τὰ ἡμέτερα σπέρματα ἀνορύττων· ἕτεροι δὲ ἔλεγον· "Ἀκουσόμεθά σου πάλιν περὶ τούτου"· καὶ αὖθις ἕτεροι· "Ξένων δαιμονίων δοκεῖ καταγγελεὺς εἶναι, ὅτι, φησὶν ὁ Λουκᾶς, τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ τὴν ἀνάστασιν εὐηγγελίζετο"· καὶ πάλιν ἕτεροι· "∆υνάμεθα γνῶναι τίς ἡ καινὴ αὕτη ἡ ὑπὸ σοῦ λαλουμένη διδαχή;" Καὶ ἁπλῶς εἰπεῖν, οἱ πλείους αὐτῶν ἔσκωπτον τὸν Παῦλον περὶ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν ὅλως διαλεγόμενον. 7.42 Ἡνίκα δὲ καὶ πρὸς τὸν Φῆστον τὸν ἡγεμόνα καὶ τὸν Ἀγρίππαν τὸν βασιλέα ὁ Παῦλος ἐγκαλούμενος ὑπὸ Ἰουδαίων ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος παρίστατο, τῶν προπραχθέντων τὴν δύναμιν διηγησόμενος, ὁ Φῆστος τῷ Ἀγρίππᾳ ἔλεγεν ὡς "ζητημάτιά τινα ἔχουσι" πρὸς ἀλλήλους "περὶ τῆς ἰδίας δεισιδαιμονίας", ὅ τε Παῦλος καὶ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, "καὶ περί τινος Ἰησοῦ τεθνηκότος, ὃν ἔφασκεν ὁ Παῦλος ζῆν"· ἐπιτραπεὶς παρ' αὐτῶν ὁ Παῦλος μετὰ παρρησίας λαμπρᾷ τῇ φωνῇ ἐβόα· "Περὶ ἧς ἐλπίδος ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ Ἰουδαίων, βασιλεῦ, τί ἄπιστον παρ' ὑμῖν κρίνεται εἰ ὁ Θεὸς νεκροὺς ἐγείρει;" Εἶτα πάλιν· "Ἕνεκα τούτου συλλαβόμενοί με ὄντα ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐπειρῶντο διαχειρίσασθαι. Ἐπικουρίας οὖν τυχὼν τῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἄχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης ἕστηκα, μαρτυρόμενος μικρῷ τε καὶ μεγάλῳ, οὐδὲν ἐκτὸς λέγων ὧν τε οἱ προφῆται ἐλάλησαν μελλόντων γίνεσθαι καὶ Μωϋσῆς· εἰ παθητὸς ὁ Χριστός, εἰ πρῶτος ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν, φῶς μέλλει καταγγέλλειν τῷ τε λαῷ καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν." 7.43 Ὁμοίως πάλιν καὶ αὐτοῖς τοῖς ἀπίστοις Ἰουδαίοις παρ' αὐτῶν προτραπεὶς ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ τῆς Πισιδίας τί φησιν; "Ἄνδρες Ἰσραηλῖται καὶ οἱ φοβούμενοι τὸν Θεόν, ἀκούσατε· ὁ Θεὸς τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου Ἰσραὴλ ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν, καὶ τὸν λαὸν ὕψωσεν ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ μετὰ βραχίονος ὑψηλοῦ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἐξ αὐτῆς, καὶ ὡς τεσσαρακονταετῆ χρόνον ἐτροποφόρησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ καθελὼν ἔθνη ἑπτὰ ἐν γῇ Χαναὰν κατεκληρονόμησε τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν, ὡς ἔτεσι τετρακοσίοις καὶ πεντήκοντα· καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἔδωκε κριτὰς ἕως Σαμουὴλ προφήτου· κἀκεῖθεν ᾐτήσαντο βασιλέα, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Σαούλ, υἱὸν Κίς, ἄνδρα ἐκ φυλῆς Βενιαμίν, ἔτη τεσσαράκοντα· καὶ μεταστήσας αὐτὸν ἤγειρε τὸν ∆αυῒδ αὐτοῖς εἰς βασιλέα, ᾧ καὶ εἶπε μαρτυρήσας "3Εὗρον ∆αυΐδ, τὸν τοῦ Ἰεσαί, ἄνδρα κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν μου, ὃς ποιήσει πάντα τὰ θελήματά μου"3. 7.44 Τούτου ὁ Θεὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ σπέρματος κατ' ἐπαγγελίαν ἤγαγε τῷ Ἰσραὴλ σωτηρίαν, προκηρύξαντος Ἰωάννου πρὸ προσώπου τῆς εἰσόδου αὐτοῦ βάπτισμα μετανοίας παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραήλ· ὡς δὲ ἐπλήρου Ἰωάννης τὸν δρόμον, ἔλεγε· Τί ἐμὲ ὑπονοεῖτε εἶναι, οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγώ, ἀλλ' ἰδοὺ ἔρχεται μετ' ἐμέ, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἄξιος τὸ ὑπόδημα τῶν
