Israel according to the prophecy of Jonah, the son of Amathi, the Gittite, the prophet. And the year of the world was 4671. 239 The 13th king of Israel was Zachariah, who reigned for 6 months, after whom the 14th was Shallum, for 30 days. After killing him, Menahem the son of Gadi reigned over Israel for 10 years. And the year of the world was 4712. The 15th king of Israel was Menahem, who reigned for 12 years. But many of the copies have 10 years. And the year of the world was 4712. This man destroyed in tombs those who did not accept him and impiously ripped open pregnant women. The 16th king of Israel was Pekahiah, son of Menahem, who reigned for 10 years. But Africanus says 2 years. And the year of the world was 4724. After killing Pekahiah, Pekah son of Remaliah reigned over Israel. The 17th king of Israel was Pekah son of Remaliah, who reigned for 28 years according to the accurate account. And the year of the world was 4734. For thus the 9th year of the 18th and last king of the 10 tribes, Hoshea, will be found to coincide with the 6th year of Hezekiah king of Judah according to the scripture and †not well, in which the first captivity of Israel happened. There are, however, some of the copies that have 20 years for Pekah, as do also Africanus and Eusebius, and others 18, but one must not be persuaded by them because of the necessary reason stated. Pekah king of Israel and Rezin king of Syria, having made war on Ahaz, killed 120,000 of Judah in one day, and they took 200,000 women and children as captives, whom they released on the advice of Oded the prophet. But Ahaz, having sent the silver in the treasuries to the king of the Assyrians, Tiglath-pileser, brought him for aid, not obeying Isaiah the prophet who forbade it and gave as a sign the virgin who was giving birth; who, having come, sacks both Syria and Israel and deports most of the people to the Assyrians. 240 And Hoshea, having killed Pekah, became king. Having labored much concerning the harmony of the two kingdoms of the Hebrews that were divided after Solomon down to Hezekiah king of Judah and Hoshea the 18th and last king of Israel of those in Samaria, because the sacred books of the kings do not show precisely in what time of the kings of Judah each of those who reigned in Samaria began to reign, nor again in what year of the kings of Israel each of those who reigned in Jerusalem began to rule, I was barely able to find the first year of Hoshea to be in harmony with the 12th of Ahaz, because almost all the copies say that Pekah son of Remaliah had ruled the 10 tribes in Samaria for either 18 or 20 years. But in one very accurately prepared copy, with respect to both punctuation and accentuation, that came to me from the library in Caesarea of Cappadocia, in which it was also inscribed that the great and divine Basil had collated and corrected the books from which that one was copied, in this one, then, I found 28 years for the reign of Pekah, and comparing it with the aforementioned 12th year of Ahaz, I found that the first year of Hoshea is a closer match according to the record of Kings, and so I have arranged it. For the 4th book of Kings says, word for word: "in the 12th year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel for 9 years." If, then, we give Pekah 18 or even 20 years, as most of the copies do, which Eusebius also followed, the beginning of the reign of Hoshea will be found at the completion of the 2nd year of Ahaz and the beginning of the third, and the end, which is the 9th year of the same Hoshea, in the 11th of Ahaz, and the same divine scripture will be found to be in error not only in this, but also in then stating that "and it came to pass in the 4th year of king Hezekiah, that same year being the 7th of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of the Assyrians came up against Samaria," and so forth. For counting from the 18th year of Pekah, and the 2nd of Ahaz, the 4th year of Hezekiah is not the seventh, but the 14th, which is double; but with the accurate arrangement it is in harmony. Eusebius in his canon synchronized the 9th year of Hoshea with the 11th year of Ahaz king of Judah; which is completely out of harmony. 241 The 18th and last king of Israel was Hoshea, who reigned for 9 years. And the year of the world was 4762.
