having erected in the middle a very large column, bearing a statue of the emperor Valentinian, his brother; and a marble statue in the Senate of the Concha and in the middle of the basilica in the Concha he dedicated another statue of precious stone, seated, to the same most divine emperor Valentinian. And he built the two sphendones of the Cynegium, having enclosed them and filled them with tiered seats, since it was formerly a place for single combat. And he built the public bath near the Hippodrome. And he built many other wonderful works in the same city. But the most divine emperor Valentinian executed many senators and provincial governors, as they were committing injustices and stealing and plundering. And the praepositus of his 340 palace, named Rhodanus, a most powerful and wealthy man who administered the palace, as he was the first arch-eunuch and was held in great honor, he burned alive with fagots in the sphendone of the Hippodrome, as the same emperor Valentinian was watching the hippic games. For his praepositus Rhodanus had seized the property from a certain widow named Beronice, having schemed against her, as he was in a position of power; and she approached the same emperor Valentinian. Or as soon as he became emperor, he appointed the patrician Salustius as their judge against him; who condemned the said praepositus Rhodanus. And when the emperor learned of the decision from the patrician Salustius, he ordered the said praepositus to restore to the widow what he had seized from her. And the said Rhodanus was not persuaded and did not restore it to her, but appealed against the patrician Salustius. And the emperor, being enraged, ordered the woman to approach him as he was watching the hippic games; and the woman approached him on the fifth day of the games in the morning. and as the said praepositus Rhodanus was standing very near him on his right, the emperor gave the order, and he was seized from his seat in front of the whole city, and was carried off to the sphendone of the Hippodrome and burned. And the same emperor Valentinian granted to that widow all the property of the said praepositus Rhodanus; and he was acclaimed by all the people and the senate as just and severe; and great fear fell upon evildoers and those who seize the property of others, and justice prevailed. 341 Likewise also, when he heard that the lady Mariana his wife 341 had bought a suburb that produced revenue and had given less than the suburb was worth and had been honored as Augusta, he sent and had the suburb re-evaluated, putting the evaluators under oath; and learning that it was worth a much higher price than the purchase price, he became enraged at the empress and exiled her from the city, giving the suburb back to the woman who sold it. The same emperor proclaimed his son Gratian emperor; and the same lady Mariana was recalled by her son Valerianus after he was made emperor in Rome by his father. And the most divine Valentinian, being struck by an illness after a time, died in the fort of Brigetio, being 55 years old. And after the reign of Valentinian the Great the Severe, the army, overriding the senate, made a man named Eugenius emperor; and he reigned for twenty-two days and was immediately slain. 342 And the most divine Valens, the brother of Valentinian the Severe, noble in wars, reigned, having been proclaimed by the senate of Constantinople, in the 326th year according to Antioch. For when his brother Valentinian died, Valens was not in Constantinople, but his brother had sent him in his lifetime to wage war in Sirmium against the Goths. Whom having conquered decisively he returned; and being crowned he reigned for 13 years. He was an Exakionite in dogma, a warrior, and magnanimous and a lover of building. Or as soon as
