the Spirit to command, all things will come to pass in sequence just as we have said, and as for what we have omitted—for they are many—Christ himself will teach you through himself.
But if they seem to you unbelievable and not pleasing, forgive me for advising what I have learned, and you follow all those better things you know; but see to it, my brother, lest you unintentionally follow worse things. For truly rare, and especially now, are those who know how to shepherd well and to heal rational souls. For many perhaps have feigned fasting and vigilance and the appearance of piety or have even acquired them in deed, and most are able with ease to memorize many things and to teach through words, but very few are found who can cut off the passions with a scalpel and acquire the all-encompassing virtues inalienably. And by all-encompassing virtues we mean humility, the destroyer of the passions and the cause of heavenly and angelic dispassion, and love, which never stands still nor falls, but is always added to what lies ahead, adding desire to desire and love to love, from which perfect discernment is bestowed, which guides both itself and those who follow it well and conveys them without stumbling across the noetic sea; which I pray may be given to you by God, especially now, so that you may discern your affairs in a manner pleasing to God and so act and strive (281) as to find Christ both now, working with you, and in the future, richly bestowing on you the enjoyment of the illumination from him, and that you may neither follow the wolf as a shepherd, nor enter a diseased flock, nor be found alone by yourself, lest you either be seen to have been caught by the soul-destroying wolf, or having contracted disease upon disease, die in soul, or falling down alone, you gain the "woe." For he who has given himself to a good teacher will care for none of these things, but having lived without anxiety, he will be saved in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory for ever. Amen.

Discourse 21. (283) Brothers and fathers, I pray to the God who has had mercy on me that the things for the salvation
of all may be arranged and our souls well-ordered for the life there, where brothers and parents who have gone before us await, where our thrice-blessed and happy brother, lord Antony, has departed, having lived his life here well and piously, having repented genuinely, having confessed with toil things which few of the monks consider sins. For being pure and possessing a heart pure from impassioned thoughts, that holy man considered and confessed what I think are small and altogether minor sins as great sins, since, protected by the grace of God, he passed through life a virgin, chaste in body and in heart. For from the time he entered the gate of the monastery and enlisted with Christ, he did not defile the tunic of his flesh or of his soul, not by a combination of thoughts, not by an assent of thoughts, (284) not by any deed, as he said to me, as I was sitting near his bed and weeping: "Why do you weep," he says, "brother? You have not been a denier of the faith in God, but this, as I hope, I have kept for him. And

πάντων οἰκονομηθῆναι καί τάς ψυχάς ἡμῶν διευθετηθῆναι πρός τόν ἐκεῖθε βίον καλῶς, ὅπου προλαβόντες ἡμᾶς ἀδελφοί καί γονεῖς ἀναμένουσιν, ὅπου ὁ τρισόλβιος καί μακάριος ἡμῶν ἀδελφός ὁ κῦρις μετῆλθεν Ἀντώνιος, καλῶς καί ὁσίως ἐνταῦθα πολετευσάμενος, μετανοήσας γνησίως, ἐξαγορεύσας ἐμπόνως ἅπερ ὀλίγοι τῶν μοναχῶν λογίζονται ἁμαρτήματα.
