sequence. For by day he was in charge of the house of one of the patricians and went forth each day in the palace, taking care of the things suitable for life, so that from this what he was doing was known to no man. Therefore also, every evening tears came down from his eyes and quite often (292) he made prostrations to the ground and on his face, having his feet joined together and immovable in their stance, and prayers from him to the Theotokos were read with pain and with groans and tears, and, as if the Lord were physically present, so he fell down at His immaculate feet and like a blind man he asked to be shown mercy and to see again with his soul. And as the prayer was added each evening, it lasted until midnight, with him not at all becoming lax or slothful in the time of prayer, or any member of his body moving at all, even to the turning of an eye or looking up, but he stood thus motionless, like some pillar or like one without a body.

So as he was standing on one occasion and saying "O God, be merciful to me a sinner" with the mind rather than the mouth, a divine illumination suddenly and richly appeared from above and filled the whole place. And when this happened, the young man did not know and forgot whether he was in a house or that he was under a roof. For he saw only light from all sides and did not even know if he was treading on the earth. There was in him neither fear of falling, nor care for the world, nor did any of those things which assail men who wear a body assail his thought then, but being entirely with the immaterial light and seeming himself to have become light and having forgotten the entire world, he became full of tears and inexpressible joy and exultation. Then his mind ascended to heaven and he beheld another light, clearer than the one near him. Standing near that light, that aforementioned holy and angel-like elder, the one who had appointed the commandment and the book for him, appeared to him wondrously.

(293) When, therefore, I heard these things, I considered that the intercession of this saint had cooperated much with him and that God had arranged again to show to the young man what a height of virtue this saint possessed.

And when this vision had passed and the young man, as he said, came to himself again, he was seized with joy and amazement and he wept from the heart, and sweetness accompanied the tears. Finally, he fell upon his bed and at that very hour the cock crowed and indicated it was the middle of the night. And after a little while the churches signaled for Matins, and he himself arose to chant as was his custom, not even having a thought of sleep during that night.

These things happened as God knows, who also did them by judgments which He understands, with that young man having done nothing more, except what you have heard, with right faith and unwavering hope. Let no one therefore say that he did these things as a test; for he neither said nor thought this even in his reasoning (for he who tries and tests does not possess faith), but that young man, having cast aside every other passionate and pleasure-loving thought, thus, as he swore, he paid attention to the things spoken by his own conscience, so as to be insensible in all the other sensible matters of life and not even to partake of food and drink with pleasure or very often.

Have you heard, my brothers, how much faith in God, confirmed by works, is able to do? Have you understood that neither is youth to be rejected nor old age profitable, if there is no understanding and fear of God? Have you learned that not even the middle of a city (294) hinders us from working out the commandments of God, if we are diligent and watchful, nor does quiet or withdrawal from the world profit, if we are slothful and negligent? Certainly
