in the 14th indiction, Narses the cubicularius was sent to Rome, being obliged to make war on the Goths who had taken Rome, since after Belisarius took it, the Goths rebelled again and took it. On the 9th of the month of July there was a great and terrible earthquake in all the land of Palestine and Arabia and Mesopotamia and Syria and Phoenicia, and Tyre and Sidon and Berytus and Tripoli and Byblos suffered; and in them many multitudes of people died. And in the city of Botrys, a large part was broken off from the mountain lying by the sea, the one called Lithoprosopon, and was carried into the sea and it formed a harbor, so that many very large ships could anchor in it. For before 228 this the same city did not have a harbor. And the emperor sent money to rebuild the fallen parts of the same cities. And the sea fled into the deep for one mile, and many ships were lost. And again by the command of God it was restored to its own bed. 25. 27. 14. 15. 7. 3. 7. In this year in the month of September, the 15th indiction, the consecration of Saint Irene took place across the water in Sycae. And the holy relics went out from the great church with the two patriarchs, Menas of Constantinople and Apollinarius of Alexandria. and they both sat in the imperial carriage holding the holy relics on their knees; and they came as far as the Perama and crossed over, and the emperor met them. And they opened the same church of the holy martyr Irene. In the same year the harbor of the Hebdomon was cleaned. And at the same time Menas, the bishop of Constantinople, died, and in his place came Eutychius, the apocrisiarius of Amasea, a monk of the monastery in Amasea and a presbyter on the same day, while the body of Menas was still lying in the sanctuary. And in the month of August news of victory came from Rome from Narses, the cubicularius and exarch of the Romans. For having joined battle with Totila, king of the Goths, he won a decisive victory and took Rome and he slew Totila and his blood-stained garments along with his bejeweled camel-hair hat he sent to Constantinople; and they were thrown at the feet of the emperor in the secretum. [And the year of Anthimus must be assigned to the patriarch Menas, so that the 16 years may be accounted for.] Bishop of Constantinople Eutychius, 13 years. 26. 28. 15. 1. 8. 4. 8. In this year the holy and ecumenical fifth council took place against Origen the senseless and Didymus the blind and Evagrius and their hellenizing foolish talk and again against 229 the [acephalous] chapters. But Vigilius of Rome did not sit with those who assembled; but he was released after many motions by the emperor and he died in Illyricum on his way back to Rome. 27. 29. 16. 2. 9. 5. 9. In this year on the 15th of the month of August, in the 2nd indiction, at the hour of midnight, at the dawning of Sunday, there was a terrible earthquake, so that many houses and baths and churches and part of the walls of Constantinople suffered, especially that of the Golden Gate; and many died. And a great part of Nicomedia also fell. And the same earthquake prevailed for 40 days. And for a short while the people were contrite, performing litanies and praying and remaining in the churches, and again when God's loving-kindness occurred they became worse. And the commemoration of this earthquake takes place each year in the Campus, with the people performing a litany. And the Lazoi, having rejected the Romans because of the avarice and injustices of John their ruler and having deserted to the Persians, again at this time flowed back to the Romans, and the Romans took the fortress of Petra and drove out the Persians. Years of the world 6047. Years of the divine incarnation 547. Emperor of the Romans Justinian, 38 years. 28. King of the Persians Chosroes, 48 years. 30. Bishop of Rome Vigilius, 18 years. 17. Constant.
