five volumes have come, in which he also mentions the works *On the Resurrection*; and these are in two books. 6.24.3 But indeed he also writes *On First Principles* before his departure from Alexandria, and the works entitled *Stromateis*, ten in number, he composed in the same city during the reign of Alexander, as his own autograph notes before the volumes also declare. 6.25.1 "For in explaining the first Psalm, he has made an exposition of the catalogue of the sacred scriptures of the Old Testament, writing word for word as follows: 'But it must not be unknown that the canonical books, as the Hebrews hand them down, are twenty-two, which is the number of letters among them.' 6.25.2 Then after some other things he adds, saying: 'The twenty-two books according to the Hebrews are these: the one entitled by us Genesis, but by the Hebrews, from the beginning of the book, Bresith, which is 'in the beginning'; Exodus, Ouellesmoth, which is 'these are the names'; Leviticus, Ouïkra, 'and he called'; Numbers, Ammesphekodeim; Deuteronomy, Elleaddebareim, 'these are the words'; Jesus son of Naue, Iosouebennoun; Judges, Ruth, among them in one, Sophteim; First and Second Kingdoms, among them one, Samuel, 'the called of God'; Third and Fourth Kingdoms in one, Ouammelchdauid, which is 'kingdom of David'; First and Second Chronicles in one, Dabreiamein, which is 'words of days'; First and Second Ezra in one, Ezra, which is 'helper'; book of Psalms, Spharthelleim; Proverbs of Solomon, Meloth; Ecclesiastes, Koelth; Song of Songs—for it is not, as some suppose, Songs of Songs—Sirassireim; Isaiah, Iessia; Jeremiah with Lamentations and the Epistle in one, Ieremia; Daniel, Daniel; Ezekiel, Iezekiel; Job, Iob; Esther, Esther. And besides these are the Maccabees, which is entitled Sarbethsabanaiel'. 6.25.3 These things, then, he puts in the aforementioned work; but in the first of his commentaries on Matthew, preserving the ecclesiastical canon, he testifies that he knows only four gospels, writing as follows: 6.25.4 'As having learned by tradition concerning the four gospels, which are the only undisputed ones in the church of God under heaven, that the first was written by Matthew, who was once a publican but afterwards an apostle of Jesus Christ, and was published for those who from Judaism had believed, being composed in Hebrew letters; 6.25.5 the second is that according to Mark, who made it as Peter instructed him, whom he also acknowledged as his son in the catholic epistle, through these words, saying: The church that is at Babylon, elect together with you, salutes you; and so does Mark my son. 6.25.6 and the third is that according to Luke, the gospel commended by Paul, made for those from the gentiles; and last of all that according to John.' 6.25.7 And in the fifth of his Expositions on the Gospel according to John the same man says these things concerning the epistles of the apostles: 'But he who was made a sufficient minister of the new covenant, not of the letter, but of the spirit, Paul, who fulfilled the gospel from Jerusalem and round about unto Illyricum, did not even write to all the churches which he taught, and even to those to which he wrote, he sent but a few lines. 6.25.8 And Peter, on whom the church of Christ is built, against which the gates of Hades shall not prevail, has left one acknowledged epistle; and let it be granted, also a second; for it is disputed. 6.25.9 What need be said of him who lay on Jesus' breast, John, who left one gospel, confessing that he could make so many that the world itself could not contain them? He also wrote the Apocalypse, being commanded to be silent and not to write the voices of the seven thunders. 6.25.10 He has also left an epistle of very few lines; and let it be granted, also a second and a third, since not all say that these are genuine; but both together are not a hundred lines.' 6.25.11 Furthermore, in addition to these things, concerning the Epistle to the Hebrews in his Homilies upon it, he states these things: 'That the character of the style of the epistle entitled To the Hebrews does not have
