I serve a strange and new slavery, wandering everywhere, and carrying about the tokens of my misfortune, and teaching everyone my evils. And what is more pitiful than all, Waiting for when the sun will set, and I may rest from my labors and from the pains that surround me, which now afflict me. But say some word against the Lord, and die. What then did this blessed man, more steadfast than adamant? Looking at her bitterly; O what a sound and moderate mind! and before he spoke, with his look he repelled her devices. For she expected to move fountains of tears; but he became fiercer than a lion, filled with anger and indignation, and says: Why have you spoken as one of the foolish women? If we have received good things from the Lord, shall we not endure the evil? For in return for what did God give us those things? Paying what reward? None; but from goodness and love for mankind alone. For naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I depart, he says. Picture therefore the athlete for yourselves, and imagine you see that dunghill, and him sitting in the midst of the dunghill, the golden statue, the one adorned with precious stones, the one I know not how to describe. For I cannot find matter so precious, as to be able to compare it to that blood-stained body; thus the nature of that flesh was shown to be far more brilliant than any precious matter, and the wounds brighter than the rays of the sun. Do you see how great the gain from the affliction became? For his body was fair and healthy; but it became far more venerable when cut by those wounds. Since wool is fair even before it is dyed, but when it becomes purple, it takes on an unspeakable beauty and great comeliness. For if he had not stripped him, one would not have known the good condition of the victor; if he had not pierced his body with sores, the rays would not have shone forth from within; if he had not seated him upon the dunghill, we would not have known his wealth. For a king sitting upon a throne is not so glorious, as he was then notable and conspicuous sitting upon the dunghill. For after the royal throne is death; but after that dunghill is the kingdom of heaven. For this reason the devil plundered his substance, not to make him poor, but to force him to utter some blasphemous word; and he cut his body, not to surround him with sickness, but to trip up the virtue of his soul. But nevertheless, having moved all his devices, and having made him poor instead of rich, this which seems to all of us to be most dreadful, and childless instead of having many children, and having scraped his entire body more grievously than the executioners in the courts (for their nails do not so tear the sides of those who fall into their hands, as the mouths of the worms scraped his body), and not only having cast him out of the city, nor out of his house, and having moved him to another

δουλεύω δουλείαν ξένην καὶ καινὴν, πανταχοῦ περιιοῦσα, καὶ τὰ σύμβολα τῆς συμφορᾶς περιφέρουσα, καὶ πάντας διδάσκουσα τὰ ἐμὰ κακά. Καὶ ὃ πάντων ἐστὶν ἐλεεινότερον, Προσδεχομένη τὸν ἥλιον πότε δύσει, καὶ ἀναπαύσομαι τῶν μόχθων μου καὶ τῶν περιεχουσῶν με ὀδυνῶν, αἵ με νῦν συνέχουσιν. Ἀλλ' εἰπόν τι ῥῆμα πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ τελεύτα. Τί οὖν ὁ μακάριος οὗτος καὶ ἀδάμαντος στεῤῥότερος; Βλέψας εἰς αὐτὴν πικρῶς· ὢ διανοίας σώφρονος καὶ μετρίας! καὶ πρὸ τῆς φωνῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὄψεως διεκρούσατο τὰ μηχανήματα. Ἐκείνη μὲν γὰρ προσεδόκησε δακρύων κινῆσαι πηγάς· οὗτος δὲ λέοντος σφοδρότερος γέγονε, θυμοῦ πληρωθεὶς καὶ ἀγανακτήσεως, καί φησιν· Ἱνατί ὡς μία τῶν ἀφρόνων γυναικῶν ἐλάλησας; Εἰ τὰ ἀγαθὰ ἐδεξάμεθα παρὰ Κυρίου, τὰ κακὰ οὐχ ὑποίσομεν; Ἀντὶ τίνων γὰρ ἐκεῖνα ἡμῖν ἔδωκεν ὁ Θεός; ποίαν ἐκτιννὺς ἀμοιβήν; οὐδεμίαν· ἀλλ' ἐξ ἀγαθότητος μόνης καὶ φιλανθρωπίας. Γυμνὸς γὰρ ἐξῆλθον ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου, γυμνὸς καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι, φησίν. Ὑπογράψατε τοίνυν τὸν ἀθλητὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἑαυτοῖς, καὶ νομίσατε βλέπειν τὴν κοπρίαν ἐκείνην, καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν μέσῃ τῇ κοπρίᾳ καθήμενον, τὸν ἀνδριάντα τὸν χρυσοῦν, τὸν διάλιθον, τὸν πῶς εἴπω οὐκ οἶδα. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἔχω τιμίαν οὕτως ὕλην εὑρεῖν, ὡς δυνηθῆναι παραβαλεῖν τὸ ᾑμαγμένον ἐκεῖνο σῶμα· οὕτω πάσης ὕλης τιμίας ἐκ πολλοῦ τοῦ περιόντος τῆς σαρκὸς ἐκείνης ἡ φύσις ἐδείκνυτο λαμπροτέρα, καὶ τὰ τραύματα τῶν ἡλιακῶν ἀκτίνων φαιδρότερα. Αὗται μὲν γὰρ τὰς τοῦ σώματος καταυγάζουσιν ὄψεις· ἐκεῖναι δὲ τῆς διανοίας ἡμῶν φωτίζουσι τὰ ὄμματα. Τίς εἶδε, τίς ἤκουσε τοιαῦτα 63.710 θαυμαστὰ παλαίσματα; οἱ γὰρ τῶν ἔξωθεν ἀγώνων πύκται, ἐπειδὰν κατακόψωσι τὰς κεφαλὰς τῶν ἀντιπάλων, τότε νικῶσι καὶ στεφανοῦνται· οὗτος δὲ ὅτε κατέκοψε τὸ σῶμα τοῦ δικαίου, τότε ἐνικήθη καὶ ἀνεχώρησε. Τί γέγονε, ὦ διάβολε; τίνος ἕνεκεν ἀναχωρεῖς; οὐκ ἐγένετο πάντα ὅσα ἠθέλησας; οὐκ ἀνεῖλες αὐτοῦ τὰ ποίμνια, τὰ βουκόλια, τὰς ἀγέλας τῶν ἵππων, τῶν ἡμιόνων; οὐχὶ καὶ τὸν χορὸν τῶν παίδων ἀπώλεσας, καὶ τὴν σάρκα ἅπασαν κατέκοψας; τίνος ἕνεκεν ἀνεχώρησας; Ὅτι ἐγένετο μὲν ὅσα ἠθέλησα, φησίν· ὃ δὲ γενέσθαι μάλιστα ἐβουλόμην, καὶ δι' ὃ πάντα ἐποίησα, τοῦτο οὐκ ἐγένετο· οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐβλασφήμησε. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τοῦτο πάντα ἐκεῖνα ἐποίουν, φησὶν, ἵνα τοῦτο ἐξέλθῃ· τούτου δὲ μὴ γενομένου, οὐδέν μοι πλέον ἀπὸ τῆς ζημίας τῶν χρημάτων ἐγένετο, καὶ τῆς τῶν παίδων ἀπωλείας, καὶ τῆς τοῦ σώματος πληγῆς· ἀλλὰ τοὐναντίον ὅπερ ἂν ἐβουλόμην ἐξέβη, λαμπρότερον ἐποίησα τὸν ἐχθρὸν, φαιδρότερον εἰργασάμην τὸν ἀντίδικον. Ἔγνως ὅσον τῆς θλίψεως τὸ κέρδος ἐγένετο; Καλὸν μὲν γὰρ τὸ σῶμα καὶ ὑγιαῖνον ἦν· πολλῷ δὲ σεμνότερον γέγονε κατατμηθὲν ὑπὸ τῶν τραυμάτων ἐκείνων. Ἐπεὶ καὶ ἔρια καλὰ μὲν καὶ πρὸ τῆς βαφῆς, ἐπειδὰν δὲ ἁλουργὰ γένηται, ἄφατον προσλαμβάνει τὸ κάλλος καὶ πολλὴν τὴν εὐπρέπειαν. Εἰ γὰρ μὴ ἀπέδυσεν αὐτὸν, οὐκ ἂν Ἔγνω τοῦ στεφανίτου τὴν εὐεξίαν· εἰ μὴ διέτρησεν αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ὠτειλαῖς, οὐκ ἂν ἀντέλαμψαν ἔνδοθεν αἱ ἀκτῖνες· εἰ μὴ ἐκάθισεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς κοπρίας, οὐκ ἂν ἔγνωμεν αὐτοῦ τὸν πλοῦτον. Οὐδὲ γὰρ οὕτω λαμπρὸς βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ θρόνου καθήμενος, ὡς ἐκεῖνος τότε ἐπὶ τῆς κοπρίας καθήμενος ἐπίσημος ἦν καὶ περιφανής. Μετὰ μὲν γὰρ τὸν βασιλικὸν θρόνον θάνατος· μετὰ δὲ τὴν κοπρίαν ἐκείνην οὐρανῶν βασιλεία. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τοῦτο τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτοῦ ἐσύλα ὁ διάβολος, οὐχ ἵνα πένητα ποιήσῃ, ἀλλ' ἵνα βλάσφημόν τι ῥῆμα ἐκβαλεῖν βιάσηται· καὶ τὸ σῶμα κατέτεμνεν, οὐχ ἵνα ἀῤῥωστίᾳ περιβάλῃ, ἀλλ' ἵνα ὑποσκελίσῃ τὴν κατὰ ψυχὴν ἀρετήν. Ἀλλ' ὅμως πάντα αὐτοῦ κινήσας τὰ μηχανήματα, καὶ πένητα ἀντὶ πλουτοῦντος ποιήσας, τοῦτο δὴ τὸ πᾶσιν ἡμῖν φρικωδέστατον εἶναι δοκοῦν, καὶ ἀντὶ πολύπαιδος ἄπαιδα, καὶ καταξάνας αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα ἅπαν τῶν ἐν δικαστηρίοις δημίων χαλεπώτερον (οὐ γὰρ οὕτω διορύττουσιν οἱ ἐκείνων ὄνυχες τὰς πλευρὰς τῶν ἐμπιπτόντων αὐτοῖς, ὡς κατέξαναν αὐτοῦ τὸ σῶμα τῶν σκωλήκων τὰ στόματα), καὶ οὐχὶ τῆς πόλεως ἐκβαλὼν μόνον, οὐδὲ τῆς οἰκίας, καὶ εἰς ἄλλην μεταστήσας
