We all hear of David and are amazed and say that there is one David and there has been no other, and behold, here is something greater than David. For he received his witness from God and was anointed a prophet and a king and became a partaker of the Holy Spirit and had many proofs concerning God; therefore, having sinned and been deprived of the grace of the Spirit and having had his prophecy taken away and been estranged from his customary conversation with God, if he sought these things again, remembering the grace from which he had fallen, what is so wonderful? But this man, having never taken any such thing to mind, but clinging only to the things of the world and seeing only the things that are fleeting and having a mind that had never imagined anything higher than earthly things, O the judgments of thee, Lord only heard about these things and immediately believed; and so much so, that he also demonstrated works befitting faith, through which his mind, having been given wings, reached to the heavens and moved the Mother of Christ to compassion and by her intercession propitiated the Divinity and was empowered to make the grace of the Spirit reach to heaven and was deemed worthy to behold a light for which all yearn and which very few attain.

This young man, who neither fasted for long periods, nor ever slept on the ground, nor wore haircloth, nor cut his hair, nor departed from the world in body but in spirit, having kept vigil for only a short time, appeared greater than Lot, (295) who is famed in Sodom. Or rather, to speak of an angel in the body, graspable and ungraspable, seen but not held, a man in appearance and bodiless in spirit, seen as all things to all men and being alone only to God who knows all. Wherefore also, at the setting of the perceptible sun, the sweet light of the noetic luminary succeeds this one, pre-confirming and making credible the unceasing light that is to succeed him in the future. And reasonably so; for the love of the one sought drove him out of himself and of the world and of nature and of all things, and made him entirely of the Spirit and light; and this while living in the midst of a city and providing for a household and caring for slaves and free men and doing and performing all things that are fitting for life.

But these things are sufficient both as praise for the young man and to move you to longing and imitation of him, or do you still wish me to say other, greater things, which perhaps your hearing will not be able to accept? Yet what will be found greater than this or what more perfect? Certainly there is nothing else greater, as Gregory the Theologian said: "The beginning," he says, "of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. For where there is fear, there is keeping of the commandments. And where there is keeping of the commandments, there is purification of the flesh, of the cloud that obstructs the soul and does not allow it to see the divine ray clearly. And where there is purification, there is illumination. And illumination is the fulfillment of longing for those who yearn for the greatest things or the greatest thing or what is beyond the great." So in saying these things, he showed that the illumination of the Spirit is the endless end of all virtue, in which he who has arrived has attained the end and limit of all perceptible things, but has found the beginning of the knowledge of spiritual things.

(296) These, my brothers, are the wonders of God. For this reason God reveals his saints who are hidden, so that some may emulate them, and others may be without excuse. And those who wish to be in the midst of turmoil, living worthily in communities and on mountains and in caves, are saved and are deemed worthy of great goods from God for their faith in him alone, so that those who fail through negligence may have nothing to say on the day of judgment. For he is true, my brothers, who promised to save by faith in him alone. Have mercy, therefore, on yourselves and on us who love you and often weep for you and shed tears—for the compassionate and merciful God commands us to be such—and having believed with all your soul in the Lord, leave the earth and all things that pass away, and draw near to him and cling to him, because in a little while both heaven and earth

Ἐκεῖνος γάρ παρά Θεοῦ τήν μαρτυρίαν εἴληφε καί προφήτης ἐχρίσθη καί βασιλεύς καί Πνεύματος Ἁγίου γέγονε μέτοχος καί πολλάς εἶχε τάς περί Θεοῦ ἀποδείξεις· ἁμαρτήσας οὖν καί στεερηθείς τήν χάριν τοῦ Πνεύματος καί τήν προφητείαν ἀφαιρεθείς καί τῆς συνήθους ὁμιλίας τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλοτριωθείς, εἰ ταῦτα πάλιν ἐζήτησε, μνησθείς τῆς χάριτος ἧς ἐξέπεσε, τί θαυμαστόν; Οὗτος δέ μηδέν τοιοῦτον ἐν νῷ λαβόμενός ποτε, ἀλλά μόνοις προσκείμενος τοῖς τοῦ κόσμου κάι μόνα βλέπων τά πρόσκαιρα καί διάνοιαν ἔχων μηδέν φαντασθεῖσαν τῶν γηΐνων ποτέ ὑψηλότερον, ὤ τῶν κριμάτων σου, Κύριε μόνον ἤκουσε περί τούτων καί εὐθέως ἐπίστευσε· καί τοσοῦτον, ὥστε καί ἔργα τῇ πίστει ἁρμόζοντα ἐπιδείξασθαι, δι᾿ ὧν ἡ ἐκείνου πτερωθεῖσα διάνοια εἰς οὐρανούς ἔφθασε καί τήν Μητέρα Χριστοῦ εἰς συμπάθειαν εἵκλυσε καί τῇ ταύτης πρεσβείᾳ τό Θεῖον ἐξιλεώσατο καί τήν χάριν τοῦ Πνεύματος ἕως οὐρανοῦ φθάσαι ἐνίσχυσε καί φῶς θεάσασθαι κατηξίωσεν, οὗ πάντες ἐφίενται καί ὀλίγοι λίαν ἐπιτυγχάνουσιν.

Οὗτος ὁ νέος, ὁ μήτε χρόνοις νηστεύσας πολλοῖς, μήτε ποτέ χαμευνήσας, μή ἐνδυσάμενος τρίχινα, μή κόμην ἀποκειράμενος, μή κόσμου ἐκστάς τῷ σώματι, πνεύματι δέ, ἀγρυπνήσας μόνον ὀλίγα, ὑπέρ τόν Λώτ ἐφάνη, (295) τόν ἐν Σοδόμοις θρυλούμενον. Μᾶλλον δέ εἰπεῖν ἐν σώματι ἄγγελος, κρατητός καί ἀκράτητος, βλεπόμενος ἀλλ᾿ οὐ κατεχόμενος, ἄνθρωπος τό φαινόμενον καί ἄσαρκος τόν νούμενον, τοῖς πᾶσι τά πάντα ὁρώμενος καί μόνος μόνῳ Θεῷ τῷ πάντα γινώσκοντι ὤν. ∆ιό καί τῇ τοῦ αἰσθητοῦ ἡλίου δύσει τοῦ νοητοῦ φωστῆρος τό γλυκύ τοῦτον διαδέχεται φῶς, προβεβαιοῦν καί πιστούμενον τό μέλλον αὐτόν ἀδιάλειπτον διαδέξασθαι φῶς. Καί εἰκότως· ἡ γάρ ἀγάπη τοῦ ζητουμένου ἐξέστησεν αὐτόν καί κόσμου καί φύσεως καί πραγμάτων ἁπάντων, καί ὅλον αὐτοῦ τοῦ Πνεύματος καί φῶς ἀπειργάσατο· καί ταῦτα μέσον πόλεως οἰκοῦντα καί οἴκου προνοούμενον δούλων τε καί ἐλευθέρων φροντίζοντα καί πάντα ποιοῦντα καί πράσσοντα ὅσα τῷ βίῳ ἁρμόζουσιν.

Ἀλλά ἀρκοῦσι ταῦτα καί τῷ νέῳ εἰς ἔπαινον καί ὑμᾶς κινῆσαι εἰς πόθον καί μίμησιν αὐτοῦ, ἤ ἔτι βούλεσθε· καί ἄλλα εἰπεῖν με μείζονα, ἅ οὐδέ ἡ ἀκοή ὑμῶν ἴσως δυνηθῇ παραδέξασθαι; Ὅμως τί τούτου μεῖζον εὑρήσεται ἤ τί τελειότερον; Πάντως οὐδέν ἐστι μεγαλώτερον ἄλλο, καθώς ὁ Θεολόγος ἔφη Γρηγόριος· "Ἀρχή, φησί, σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου. Οὗ γάρ φόβος, ἐντολῶν τήρησις. Οὗ δέ ἐντολῶν τήρησις, σαρκός κάθαρσις, τοῦ ἐπιπροσθοῦντος τῇ ψυχῇ νέφους καί μή ἐῶντος καθαρῶς ἰδεῖν τήν θείαν ἀκτῖνα. Οὐ δέ κάθαρσις, ἔλλαμψις. Ἔλλαμψις δέ πόθου πλήρωσις τοῖς τῶν μεγίστων ἤ τοῦ μεγίστου ἤ ὑπέρ τό μέγα ἐφιεμένοις". Ὥστε ταῦτα εἰπών, τέλος ἀτελές εἶναι πάσης ἀρετῆς τόν φωτισμόν ἐδήλωσε τόν τοῦ Πνεύματος, εἰς ὅν ὁ γενόμενος τέλος μέν καί πέρας τῶν αἰσθητῶν ἁπάντων κατείληφε, ἀρχήν δέ τῆς τῶν πνευματικῶν εὗρε γνώσεως.

(296) Ταῦτα ἀδελφοί μου, Θεοῦ τά θαυμάσια. ∆ιά τοῦτο κρυπτομένους φανεροῖ τούς ἁγίους αὐτοῦ ὁ Θεός, ἵνα οἱ μέν ζηλῶσι τούτους, οἱ δέ ἀναπολόγητοι γένωνται. Καί οἱ θέλοντες ἐν μέσῳ θορύβων εἶναι, ἐν κοινοβίοις τε καί ὄρεσι καί σπηλαίοις ἀξίως πολιτευόμενοι, σώζωνται καί μεγάλων παρά τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑπέρ μόνης τῆς εἰς αὐτόν πίστεως ἀξιοῦνται καλῶν, ὡς ἄν οἱ διά ῥᾳθυμίαν ἀποτυγχάνοντες μηδέν ἔχωσι λέγειν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως. Ἀψευδής γάρ ἐστιν, ἀδελφοί μου, ὁ ἐπαγγειλάμενος σῴζειν ἐκ μόνης τῆς εἰς αὐτόν πίστεως. Ἐλεήσατε οὖν ἑαυτούς καί ἡμᾶς τούς ὑμᾶς ἀγαπῶντας καί πολλάκις ὑπέρ ὑμῶν θρηνοῦντας καί δάκρυα χέοντας - τοιούτους γάρ ἡμᾶς ὁ συμπαθής καί ἐλεήμων Θεός παρακελεύεται -, καί πιστεύσαντες ὁλοψύχως ἐπί τόν Κύριον, ἄφετε γῆν καί πάντα ὅσα παρέρχονται, καί προσέλθετε πρός αὐτόν καί κολλήθητε αὐτῷ, ὅτι μικρόν ἔτι καί ὁ οὐρανός καί ἡ γῆ
