But the same thing, if you shut your eyes, is immediately ungraspable, it does not remain for the blind, but is present with those who see. And when it sets, it leaves even these as if blind — for at night men's eyes do not see clearly, the soul therefore, peering through these, sees light, but when the light is not present, it is certainly as if in darkness, but when this rises, then you see light first of all, and in the light, all things, (175) and having the light you do not have it: for you have it, because you also see, but not being strong enough to hold it down or to take it with your hands. You have it, you think, not at all, you spread out your palms, the sun shines in them and you think you are holding it; this is what I mean, that you have it. You suddenly clench them again and it is unheld; thus again you have nothing. Simple things are held simply, but are not squeezed graspingly, for even if by nature this very light of the seen sun is considered a body, yet it is also indivisible. How then will you lead this into your house, tell me? And how will you be strong enough to hold it down, how will you hold the ungraspable, and how will you possess it whole, partially or even universally? And how will you take a piece of it and hide it in your bosom? In no way at all, you might say to me,
