in Rome of the same emperor Arcadius to his brother the emperor Honorius, and likewise also having traduced him on the road, while Arcadius was coming to Constantinople, Gainas the senator usurped power, wishing to be emperor. and Arcadius arrived in Constantinople and killed the usurper Gainas. So after the reign of Theodosius the Great, the Spaniard, his son Arcadius reigned in Constantinople, having come 349 from Rome, for twenty-three years in all, leaving in Rome Honorius his younger brother. And he was very quick and energetic. and immediately upon arriving he made his son Theodosius the Younger emperor in Constantinople. This same Arcadius also created his own military unit, which he called the Arcadiaci. And having suddenly fallen ill, he died, being 31 years old. And after the reign of Arcadius his brother Honorius reigned in Rome for 31 years. And he was quick to anger and prudent. This same emperor closed the temple of Serapis-Helios in Alexandria the Great. And during his reign, when a great civil disturbance occurred in Rome, being angered, he departed to the city of Ravenna; and having sent, he brought Alaric the general from the Gallic provinces with a host, in order to plunder Rome. and Alaric, having come into the city, committed himself to the city and to the senators who were enemies of Honorius, and he did not harm any of the city's inhabitants, but rushing to the palace he took all the palace's valuables and Placidia, Honorius' paternal sister, being a young 350 virgin; and he again departed to the Gallic provinces, having seized power. But Constantius, being still a comes with Alaric, having been entrusted by him with the girl Placidia, was able to take her; and having fled from Alaric he brought her to the emperor Honorius. And Honorius, giving thanks to him, made him a senator, and gave Placidia to him as a wife, and made him emperor in Rome; from whom this same Constantius had a son, whom he called Valentinian. and Honorius, together with Constantius, during his reign destroyed the four usurpers Attalus and Sebastianus and Maximus and Constans, the senators, who rose up against him by misleading the people. And after they were killed and their property confiscated, leaving Constantius to reign in Rome, this same Honorius came to Constantinople, reigning with Theodosius the Younger. And Constantius, emperor of Rome, died a natural death during the reign and life of Honorius; and a certain senator named John, having usurped power, with the other senators making common cause with him, reigns in Rome. And when Honorius learned this, he went mad; and being struck by disease, he died of dropsy, being 42 years old. BOOK 14. OF THE REIGN OF THEODOSIUS THE YOUNGER UNTIL THE REIGN OF LEO THE LESSER. And after the reign of Honorius, the most divine Theodosius the Younger, the son of emperor Arcadius, brother of Honorius, reigned alone in the consulship of Stilicho and Aurelianus, having been crowned by his own father; and he reigned in all for 50 years and 7 months. who favored the Green faction and claimed them as his own in every city. And in Constantinople he moved them, who formerly watched on his right-hand side, and made them watch on the left-hand benches; and the foot-soldiers
