for conscience toward God one endures sorrows, suffering unjustly. Let servants not avoid being well-disposed to their masters. Character describes the free and the slave.

TITLE 21. -Concerning wicked slaves.

A stubborn servant will not be corrected by words. For though he understand, he will not obey. Fodder and a rod for a donkey, and bread, and discipline, and work for a servant. Work in discipline, and you will find rest. Give him slack, and he will seek liberty. A yoke and a strap will bend the neck, and for an evil servant, tortures and torments. Put him to work, so that he may not be idle. For idleness has taught much evil. Do not be ashamed to make bloody the side of a wicked servant. It is characteristic of wicked slaves to reject mastery, and to rise up against authority, and to make the free man their fellow slave. No one is so mad, being a slave, as to oppose his master.

TITLE 22. -Concerning those who are displeased. O you who rejoice in a thing of nought. To what shall I compare the men of this

generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, 95.1404 and calling to one another, and saying: We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned to you, and you did not weep. For John the Baptist has come, neither eating nor drinking, and they say: He has a demon. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

TITLE 23. -Concerning the double-minded, and the vacillating, and those unsteady in judgment,

and those who change. They called upon Egypt, and they went to the Assyrians. Woe to the double heart,

and to the sinner who walks on two paths. Do not approach with a double heart. A fool changes like the moon. A heart walking on two ways will not prosper. A wicked life is from house to house; and where he shall sojourn, he will not open his mouth. To him that went out, and to him that came in, there was no peace from the affliction. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? For those whose mind is prone to change, it is not unreasonable for their life also to be unordered. Men are like the clouds, carried to another part of the air at another time according to the changes of the winds. We consider these to be fickle and foolish, who are easily carried to both sides, and who flow back and forth, like shifting breezes, or changes, or the refluent currents of straits, or the waves of an unstable sea. The fool is by nature steadfast in nothing. And his whole life is in suspense, having no unshaken foundation. A plant continually transplanted will not bear fruit.

TITLE 24. -Concerning glory, and honor; and that one must not give glory to another.

Give not thy glory to another, nor the things that are profitable unto thee to a strange nation. I will not give my glory to another. As long as you live, and breath is in you, do not exchange yourself for any flesh. For it is better that your children should ask of you, than that you should look to the hands of your sons; and at the time of your death distribute your inheritance. To son and wife, and friend, and brother, give not power over yourself in your life. Give not your glory to another, lest repenting you should have need of them.

Λόγοις οὐ παιδευθήσεται οἰκέτης σκληρός. Ἐὰν γὰρ καὶ νοήσῃ, ἀλλ' οὐχ ὑπακούεται. Χορτάσματα καὶ ῥάβδος ὄνῳ, ἄρτος δὲ, καὶ παιδεία, καὶ ἔργον οἰκέτῃ. Ἔργασαι ἐν παιδείᾳ, καὶ εὑρήσεις ἀνάπαυσιν. Ἄνες χεῖρας αὐτῷ, καὶ ζητήσει ἐλευθερίαν. Ζυγὸς καὶ ἱμὰς τράχηλον κάμψουσι, καὶ οἰκέτῃ κακούργῳ στρέβλαι καὶ βάσανοι. Ἔμβαλλε αὐτὸν εἰς ἐργασίαν, ἵνα μὴ ἀργῇ. Πολλὴν γὰρ κακίαν ἐδίδαξεν ἡ ἀργία. Οἰκέτου πονηροῦ μὴ αἰσχυνθῇς πλευρὰν αἱμάξαι. ∆ούλων ὑπάρχει κακῶν ἀθετεῖν δεσποτείαν, καὶ ἐπανίστασθαι κυριότητι, καὶ ὁμόδουλον ἑαυτοῖς ποιεῖν τὸν ἐλεύθερον. Οὐδεὶς οὕτως μέμηνεν, ὡς δοῦλος ὢν, ἐναντιοῦσθαι δεσπότῃ.

ΤΙΤΛ. ΚΒʹ. -Περὶ δυσαρεστουμένων. Ὦ οἱ εὐφραινόμενοι ἐπ' οὐδενὶ λόγῳ. Τίνι ὁμοιώσω τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τῆς

γενεᾶς ταύτης· Ὅμοιοί εἰσι παιδίοις ἐν ἀγορᾷ καθημένοις, 95.1404 καὶ προσφωνοῦσιν ἀλλήλους, καὶ λέγουσιν· Ηὐλήσαμεν ὑμῖν, καὶ οὐκ ὠρχήσασθε· ἐθρηνήσαμεν ὑμῖν, καὶ οὐκ ἐκλαύσατε. Ἐλήλυθε γὰρ Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστὴς, μήτε ἐσθίων, μήτε πίνων, καὶ λέγουσι· ∆αιμόνιον ἔχει. ΤΙΤΛ. ΚΓʹ. -Περὶ διψύχων, καὶ παλιμβούλων, καὶ ἀστατούντων τὴν γνώμην,

καὶ μεταβατῶν. Αἴγυπτον ἐπεκαλοῦντο, καὶ εἰς Ἀσσυρίους ἐπορεύθησαν. Οὐαὶ καρδίᾳ δισσῇ,

καὶ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἐπιβεβηκότι ἐπὶ δύο τρίβους. Μὴ προσέλθῃς καρδίᾳ δισσῇ. Ἄφρων ὡς σελήνη ἀλλοιοῦται. Καρδία ἐπιβαίνουσα δυσὶν ὁδοῖς, οὐκ εὐοδωθήσεται. Ζωὴ πονηρὰ ἐξ οἰκίας εἰς οἰκίαν· καὶ οὗ παροικήσει, οὐκ ἀνοίξει στόμα. Τῷ ἐκπορευομένῳ, καὶ τῷ εἰσπορευομένῳ, οὐκ ἦν εἰρήνη ἀπὸ τῆς θλίψεως. Ἀνὴρ δίψυχος ἀκατάστατος ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ. Ἐτρέχετε καλῶς· τίς ὑμᾶς ἐνέκοψε τῇ ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι; Οἷς εὔκολος πρὸς μεταβολὴν ἡ διανοία, τούτοις οὐδὲν ἀπεικὸς καὶ τὸν βίον εἶναι μὴ τετάγμενον. Ἄνθρωποι ταῖς νεφέλαις ἐοίκασιν, πρὸς τὰς τῶν ἀνέμων μεταβολὰς, ἄλλοτε κατ' ἄλλο μέρος τοῦ ἀέρος ἐμφερομέναις. Κούφους καὶ ἀνοήτους, τούτους ὑπολαμβάνομεν, τοὺς ῥᾳδίως ἐπ' ἀμφότερα φερομένους, καὶ μεταῤῥέοντας, καθάπερ αὔρας μεταπιπτούσας, ἢ μεταβολὰς, ἢ παλιῤῥοίας εὐρίπων, ἢ θαλάσσης ἀστάτου κύματα. Πέφυκεν ὁ ἄφρων ἐπὶ μηδενὸς ἑστάναι πράγματος. Καὶ ἔστιν αὐτῷ πᾶσα ἡ ζωὴ κρεμαμένη, βάσις ἀκράδαντον οὐκ ἔχουσα. Φυτὸν μεταφερόμενον συνεχῆς, οὐ ποιήσει καρπόν.

ΤΙΤΛ. Κ∆ʹ. -Περὶ δόξης, καὶ τιμῆς· καὶ ὅτι οὐ δεῖ δόξαν ἑτέρῳ παρασχεῖν.

Μὴ δὸς ἑτέρῳ τὴν δόξαν σου, καὶ τὰ συμφέροντά σοι ἔθνει ἀλλοτρίῳ. Τὴν δόξαν μου ἑτέρῳ οὐ δώσω. Ὡς ἔτι ζῇς, καὶ πνοὴ ἐν σοὶ, μὴ ἀλλάξῃς σεαυτὸν ἐν πάσῃ σαρκί. Κρεῖσσον γάρ ἐστι τὰ τέκνα δεηθῆναί σου, ἢ σὲ ἐμβλέπειν εἰς χεῖρας υἱῶν σου· καὶ ἐν καιρῷ τελευτῆς διάδος κληρονομίαν σου. Υἱῷ καὶ γυναικὶ, καὶ φίλῳ, καὶ ἀδελφῷ, μὴ δὸς ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ σὲ ἐν ζωῇ σου. Μὴ δὸς ἑτέρῳ τὴν δόξαν σου, ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθεὶς δέῃ περὶ αὐτῶν.
