Christ rejoices when we are persecuted for his sake. Angels applaud, saints bless, demons fall along with the iconoclasts, even if they rage. And as long as you are there, make clear to us also how things are going on inside. When you move, with the heretics coming out, wherever the Lord may grant you to lay your head, child, if you have the ability, make it known. But if not, I know where you are: for you are in Christ and with Christ. May we also know you in the same way. Do not sit unprepared, lest you be quickly taken up or driven away. Greet all my brothers, especially Peter, Tithoios, Ignatius, Timothy and the rest. Christ be with your spirit through the intercession of my father. I do not think that he is moving me, unless perhaps to be flogged or exiled elsewhere. Pray for my lowliness so that Christ may become my strength, freely for one who is truly an abortion. The brothers greet you sincerely. 134 {1To the same}1 As much as the news of your illness discouraged us, so much did the report of your recovery encourage us, beloved child; if indeed it will last for you, and not, from the troubling of the brothers, lead you to a relapse. For I thought you fell ill from that, having also used much water-drinking, and the change of place. But it is well that you were bled; for in view of the affliction of your internal organs, how else could you have been purged, seeing that even after the removal, if you do not use a potent ointment, you would not be well for long. Therefore take care in all things, so that you may serve God and minister to me, a sinner. And I am being cleansed of my illness more and more, and may it also be of my soul. For concerning this is the whole account for every man; for the body is nothing, as the Lord said. Provision X and send him to the things in the city, securing him with wisdom and prudence to do the things appointed for him. I, wretched one, lie on the battlefield between two passions, both of fitting fear and of fearlessness on account of the commandment, as I often tell you. For being under guard is not a sufficient excuse for me, who am able to speak; for if the enemies of the Lord, having Caesar as their helper, boldly proclaim their impiety, turning away the people of God, and set fire to every church, what shall we suffer, who have the king of all, not even speaking in secret to our fellow zealots? For this reason the Theologian says, 'the mouths of the pious are silent,' setting this down as a great accusation; but again we are commanded to flee temptation. Therefore one must proceed in the middle way, as has been said, and after this, even to fall into it is blessed. Let no one therefore understand what I write, not even the archbishop himself, and as the Lord prospers. Even if A and B avoid the metropolitan, yet you, child, secretly unite with him in friendship, making known also my own disposition towards him; for he has striven greatly for God among the bishops. We are very much in need, do not delay. May God save you. The brothers greet you very much, and from us, Callistus. 135 {1To the same}1 And I have heard what has happened and I have marveled not so much at the apostate Nectarius, as at the impious steward, whom the Lord has made a wonder, if indeed the report is entirely true in these evil days. But a struggle enters me concerning the seven, as I consider how things will turn out for them; for the separation is a work of trial. May the Lord strengthen them to come through the impending attacks unswervingly, not only them, but also all those who have loved his appearance, which is seen and venerated clearly in his man-shaped icon. You did well to report to us what was heard; for she is named our spiritual mother. Since also everyone who suffers likewise is father and mother and brother. We are now concerned about X, whom may the Lord bring safe and sound. We have received what you sent. To the one who remembered us give as a blessing the soft garment and keep for yourself the things inside; for we had nothing else ready. Those here greet you; Greet those with you from us. 136 {1To the same}1 In a single moment of time how many things happen? Euprepianus was taken away, upon...
