may profit. For that He has great regard for the wronged, hear how he establishes this through what follows: To You is the poor man 55.139 left; You were a helper to the orphan. Another, You have become. Another, You shall be. What he says is something like this: This is Your work, this is Your special province. He would not abandon and betray what is His own. For just as it is the role of the artisan to build, and of the pilot to steer the ship, and of the sun to give light; so indeed is it Yours to stand up for orphans, to stretch out a hand to the poor. No one is such a protector of these, but You alone. For the phrase, "is left," indicates this. No one else, he says, but You alone are the protector of orphans and the poor. Break the arm of the sinner and the evil man. His sin shall be sought, and he shall not be found because of it. Another, Let his impiety be sought out, so that he himself may not be found. He does not simply ask for the sinner to be broken, but his strength, his power, the kindling of his wickedness; then he asks for him to be held accountable, and to give an account of his deeds, and showing the magnitude of the injustice, he says: If this happens, he will not be able to stand, nor will he appear, but he will perish, he will be gone, he will be destroyed root and branch, when his deeds are examined. Therefore, let no one bewail orphanhood, let no one bewail poverty. For the more these are intensified, the more God's assistance will be increased. Let no one be proud of his power, nor be puffed up. For this position is precarious and precipitous, and it very easily overturns those who are not careful. The Lord will reign for ever and for ever and ever. Here he responds to those who are agitated and troubled because sinners are not immediately punished. Why, he says, are you afraid? What do you fear? Is the judge temporary? Does His kingdom have an end? Even if He does not grant it now, He certainly will. For the one who demands justice remains, and reigns perpetually. You shall perish, O nations, from His land. You have heard the desire of the poor, O Lord; Your ear has heeded the preparation of their heart. Another, Your ear has listened to the intention of their heart. Another, You will prepare their hearts for your ear to attend. To judge for the orphan and the humble, that man may no longer boast upon the earth. Another, To judge for the orphan and the crushed. Do you see the prophet showing more concern for the care of the wicked? For it is they who suffer most grievously. For to the one wronged, the loss is of money, but for the other, the danger is of the ultimate things. For what if they do not perceive the sickness in which they are? This is an intensification of insensibility, and for this reason they should be pitied all the more; this is of an imperfect mind. Since children, too, take no account of what is truly fearful, but often even put their hands to the fire, yet are terrified and tremble when they see empty masks. To these are the covetous likened, fearing poverty, which is not something fearful, but even a cause of security; but esteeming highly unjust wealth and covetousness, which is more fearful than any fire. For everywhere covetousness is an evil. The Prophet therefore urges that this be utterly cut out, threatening, frightening, calling upon God to rise up for the punishment of such callousness. For which reason he adds, saying: You shall perish, O nations, from His land, threatening them with utter 55.140 destruction, and asking him to become a helper and avenger of the wronged, so that these might breathe again, and those might be brought to their senses. Therefore, let no one pursue an abundance of money. Many evils are born from this for those who are not careful: despair, sloth, envy, vainglory, and many others besides these. But that you may be freed from all these, cut out the root; for if it does not remain, the evil shoots do not sprout. For this reason these things have also been said, not that we might hear
