testing him, and when he understood what he was saying, having corrected him as one not orthodox and persuaded him by argument, he established him in the truth concerning the dogma and restored him to his former sound opinion. 6.33.3 And to this day written records are extant of both Beryllus and of the synod held on his account, containing both the inquiries of Origen to him and the discussions which were held in his parish, and everything that was done at that time. 6.33.4 And indeed countless other things about Origen the elders of our time have handed down by memory, which I think I shall pass over, as they do not belong to the present treatise; but whatever it was necessary to know about him, it is possible to gather from the apology on his behalf written by us and by the holy martyr of our time, Pamphilus, which we diligently composed together on account of the fault-finders. 6.34.1 When Gordian had completed six full years of rule over the Romans, Philip, together with his son Philip, succeeded to the rule. The story holds that he, being a Christian, on the day of the last vigil of the Passover, wished to share with the multitude in the prayers of the church, but was not permitted to enter by the one then presiding, before he made his confession and numbered himself among those who were under examination for their offenses and occupying the place of penitence; for otherwise he would never have been received by him, had he not done this, on account of the many charges against him. And he is said to have obeyed readily, showing by his deeds the genuine and pious nature of his disposition regarding the fear of God. It was his third year, in which, when Heraclas departed this life after sixteen years of presiding over the churches in Alexandria, Dionysius received the episcopate. At that time, indeed, as was likely, with the faith increasing and our doctrine spoken boldly among all, they say that Origen, being over sixty years old, since indeed he had now acquired a very great facility from his long preparation, permitted the lectures delivered by him in public to be taken down by stenographers, having never before permitted this to be done. 6.36.2 At this time he also composed the treatises, eight in number, against the work entitled 'True Word' of Celsus the Epicurean against us, and the twenty-five tomes on the Gospel according to Matthew and those on the twelve prophets, of which we have found only twenty-five. 6.36.3 There is also extant a letter of his to the emperor Philip himself, and another to his wife, Severa, and various others to different people; of which as many as, having been preserved scattered among different people, we have been able to collect, we have listed in separate catalogues of tomes, so that they might no longer be scattered, exceeding one hundred in number. 6.36.4 And he also writes to Fabian, the bishop in Rome, and to many other rulers of churches concerning his own orthodoxy. You have the proofs of these things also in the sixth book of the apology written by us concerning the man. 6.37.1 And again others in Arabia arose at the time indicated, introducers of a dogma foreign to the truth, who said that the human soul, for the time being, at the present moment, at the same time as the end of life dies along with the bodies and is destroyed along with them, but that again, at some time, at the time of the resurrection, it would live again with them. And so, when a synod of no small size was convened then, Origen was again summoned and there also, having initiated discussions in public concerning the matter under investigation, he so conducted the discussion that the opinions of those who had previously erred were changed. At that time also another corruption began, the so-called heresy of the Elkesaites, which was also extinguished as soon as it began. Origen mentions it while speaking in public on the 82nd Psalm, saying something like this: «A certain person has come at the present time, being very proud in his ability to advocate for a godless and most impious opinion, called that of the Elkesaites, which has recently risen up against the churches. What evil things that opinion says,
