to accomplish; for he neither said nor thought this even to the point of a thought, for one who examines and tests does not possess faith, but that young man, having cast aside every other impassioned and pleasure-loving thought, thus, as he swore, paid attention to what was said by his own conscience, so as to be disposed insensibly in all the other sensible matters of life and not even to approach food and drink with pleasure or very often.

Have you heard, my brothers, what faith in God, confirmed by works, can do? Have you recognized that neither youth is to be rejected nor old age beneficial without understanding and the fear of God? Have you learned that neither the middle of a city (294) hinders us from working out the commandments of God, if we are zealous and watchful, nor does quiet or withdrawal from the world profit us, if we are slothful and negligent? Certainly we all hear of David and marvel and say that there is one David and there has been no other, and behold, here is something more than David. For he received testimony from God and was anointed a prophet and king and became a partaker of the Holy Spirit and had many proofs concerning God; having sinned, then, and being deprived of the grace of the Spirit and stripped of prophecy and estranged from his accustomed converse with God, if he sought these things again, remembering the grace from which he fell, what wonder is there? But this man, having never taken any such thing to mind, but being attached only to the things of the world and seeing only temporal things and having a mind that had never imagined anything higher than earthly things, O the judgments of you, Lord, only heard about these things and immediately believed; and so much so, that he also demonstrated works befitting faith, through which his winged mind reached to the heavens and moved the Mother of Christ to compassion and by her intercession propitiated the Divine and was strengthened for the grace of the Spirit to reach to heaven and was deemed worthy to see a light, for which all long and very few attain.

This young man, who had neither fasted for long periods, nor ever slept on the ground, nor clothed himself in haircloth, nor cut his hair, nor departed from the world in body, but in spirit, having kept vigil only a little, appeared greater than Lot, (295) the one famed in Sodom. Or rather, to speak, an angel in the body, graspable and ungraspable, seen but not held, a man in appearance and bodiless in mind, seen as all things to all men and being alone with the one God who knows all things. Therefore also, at the setting of the sensible sun, the sweet light of the noetic luminary succeeds this one, confirming and making credible the future uninterrupted light that will succeed him. And reasonably so; for the love of the one sought drove him out of himself and of the world and of nature and of all things, and made him entirely of the Spirit and light; and this while living in the middle of a city and managing a household, caring for slaves and free, and doing and performing all things that are suitable to life.

But are these things sufficient both for praise of the young man and to move you to desire and imitation of him, or do you still wish me to say other, greater things, which your hearing perhaps may not be able to receive? However, what will be found greater than this, or what more perfect? Certainly there is nothing else greater, as Gregory the Theologian said: "The beginning," he says, "of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. For where there is fear, there is keeping of the commandments. And where there is keeping of the commandments, there is purification of the flesh, of the cloud that stands before the soul and does not allow it to see the divine ray clearly. And where there is purification, there is illumination. And illumination is the fulfillment of desire for those who long for the greatest things, or the greatest thing, or that which is beyond the great." So, having said these things, he declared the illumination of the Spirit to be the endless end of all virtue, to which the

ἐργάσασθαι· οὐδέ γάρ μέχρι λογισμοῦ τοῦτο ἤ εἶπεν ἤ ἐνενόησεν ὁ γάρ δοκιμάζων καί ἐκπειράζων πίστιν οὐ κέκτηται , ἀλλά πᾶσαν ἄλλην ὁ νεανίας ἐκεῖνος ἐμπαθῆ καί φιλήδονον ἀπορριψάμενος ἔννοιαν, οὕτως, ὡς ὤμνυε, τά παρά τῆς ἰδίας λεγόμενα ἐφρόντιζε συνειδήσεως, ὡς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἄλλοις τοῦ βίου αἰσθητοῖς πράγμασιν ἀναισθήτως διακεῖσθαι καί μηδέ αὐτόν τήν βρῶσιν καί πόσιν ἐνηδόνως ἤ συχνοτέρως προσίεσθαι.

Ἠκούσατε, ἀδελφοί μου, ὅσα ἡ πίστις ἡ εἰς Θεόν δύναται, τοῖς ἔργοις βεβαιουμένη; Ἔγνωτε, ὡς οὔτε νεότης ἀπόβλητος οὔτε γῆρας ὠφέλιμον μή οὔσης συνέσεως καί φόβου Θεοῦ; Ἐμάθετε ὅτι οὔτε μέση πόλις (294) ἐμποδίζει ἡμᾶς εἰς τό κατεργάζεσθαι τάς ἐντολάς τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἐάν σπουδαῖοι ὦμεν καί διεγηγερμένοι, οὔτε ἡσυχία ὠφελεῖ ἤ ἀναχώρησις κόσμου, ἐάν ῥᾳθυμῶμεν καί ἀμελῶμεν; Πάντως ἀκούομεν τόν ∆αβίδ ἅπαντες καί θαυμάζομεν καί λέγομεν ὅτι εἷς ∆αβίδ καί ἄλλος οὐ γέγονε, καί ἰδού ἐνταῦθα καί τοῦ ∆αβίδ περισσότερον. Ἐκεῖνος γάρ παρά Θεοῦ τήν μαρτυρίαν εἴληφε καί προφήτης ἐχρίσθη καί βασιλεύς καί Πνεύματος Ἁγίου γέγονε μέτοχος καί πολλάς εἶχε τάς περί Θεοῦ ἀποδείξεις· ἁμαρτήσας οὖν καί στεερηθείς τήν χάριν τοῦ Πνεύματος καί τήν προφητείαν ἀφαιρεθείς καί τῆς συνήθους ὁμιλίας τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλοτριωθείς, εἰ ταῦτα πάλιν ἐζήτησε, μνησθείς τῆς χάριτος ἧς ἐξέπεσε, τί θαυμαστόν; Οὗτος δέ μηδέν τοιοῦτον ἐν νῷ λαβόμενός ποτε, ἀλλά μόνοις προσκείμενος τοῖς τοῦ κόσμου κάι μόνα βλέπων τά πρόσκαιρα καί διάνοιαν ἔχων μηδέν φαντασθεῖσαν τῶν γηΐνων ποτέ ὑψηλότερον, ὤ τῶν κριμάτων σου, Κύριε μόνον ἤκουσε περί τούτων καί εὐθέως ἐπίστευσε· καί τοσοῦτον, ὥστε καί ἔργα τῇ πίστει ἁρμόζοντα ἐπιδείξασθαι, δι᾿ ὧν ἡ ἐκείνου πτερωθεῖσα διάνοια εἰς οὐρανούς ἔφθασε καί τήν Μητέρα Χριστοῦ εἰς συμπάθειαν εἵκλυσε καί τῇ ταύτης πρεσβείᾳ τό Θεῖον ἐξιλεώσατο καί τήν χάριν τοῦ Πνεύματος ἕως οὐρανοῦ φθάσαι ἐνίσχυσε καί φῶς θεάσασθαι κατηξίωσεν, οὗ πάντες ἐφίενται καί ὀλίγοι λίαν ἐπιτυγχάνουσιν.

Οὗτος ὁ νέος, ὁ μήτε χρόνοις νηστεύσας πολλοῖς, μήτε ποτέ χαμευνήσας, μή ἐνδυσάμενος τρίχινα, μή κόμην ἀποκειράμενος, μή κόσμου ἐκστάς τῷ σώματι, πνεύματι δέ, ἀγρυπνήσας μόνον ὀλίγα, ὑπέρ τόν Λώτ ἐφάνη, (295) τόν ἐν Σοδόμοις θρυλούμενον. Μᾶλλον δέ εἰπεῖν ἐν σώματι ἄγγελος, κρατητός καί ἀκράτητος, βλεπόμενος ἀλλ᾿ οὐ κατεχόμενος, ἄνθρωπος τό φαινόμενον καί ἄσαρκος τόν νούμενον, τοῖς πᾶσι τά πάντα ὁρώμενος καί μόνος μόνῳ Θεῷ τῷ πάντα γινώσκοντι ὤν. ∆ιό καί τῇ τοῦ αἰσθητοῦ ἡλίου δύσει τοῦ νοητοῦ φωστῆρος τό γλυκύ τοῦτον διαδέχεται φῶς, προβεβαιοῦν καί πιστούμενον τό μέλλον αὐτόν ἀδιάλειπτον διαδέξασθαι φῶς. Καί εἰκότως· ἡ γάρ ἀγάπη τοῦ ζητουμένου ἐξέστησεν αὐτόν καί κόσμου καί φύσεως καί πραγμάτων ἁπάντων, καί ὅλον αὐτοῦ τοῦ Πνεύματος καί φῶς ἀπειργάσατο· καί ταῦτα μέσον πόλεως οἰκοῦντα καί οἴκου προνοούμενον δούλων τε καί ἐλευθέρων φροντίζοντα καί πάντα ποιοῦντα καί πράσσοντα ὅσα τῷ βίῳ ἁρμόζουσιν.

Ἀλλά ἀρκοῦσι ταῦτα καί τῷ νέῳ εἰς ἔπαινον καί ὑμᾶς κινῆσαι εἰς πόθον καί μίμησιν αὐτοῦ, ἤ ἔτι βούλεσθε· καί ἄλλα εἰπεῖν με μείζονα, ἅ οὐδέ ἡ ἀκοή ὑμῶν ἴσως δυνηθῇ παραδέξασθαι; Ὅμως τί τούτου μεῖζον εὑρήσεται ἤ τί τελειότερον; Πάντως οὐδέν ἐστι μεγαλώτερον ἄλλο, καθώς ὁ Θεολόγος ἔφη Γρηγόριος· "Ἀρχή, φησί, σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου. Οὗ γάρ φόβος, ἐντολῶν τήρησις. Οὗ δέ ἐντολῶν τήρησις, σαρκός κάθαρσις, τοῦ ἐπιπροσθοῦντος τῇ ψυχῇ νέφους καί μή ἐῶντος καθαρῶς ἰδεῖν τήν θείαν ἀκτῖνα. Οὐ δέ κάθαρσις, ἔλλαμψις. Ἔλλαμψις δέ πόθου πλήρωσις τοῖς τῶν μεγίστων ἤ τοῦ μεγίστου ἤ ὑπέρ τό μέγα ἐφιεμένοις". Ὥστε ταῦτα εἰπών, τέλος ἀτελές εἶναι πάσης ἀρετῆς τόν φωτισμόν ἐδήλωσε τόν τοῦ Πνεύματος, εἰς ὅν ὁ
