I will set before you, that you may not be carried away. He rejects some things from all scripture, he uses sayings again from all the old and the evangelical, he completely rejects the apostle. And he says that to deny is a matter of indifference and that the one who has understood will deny with his mouth in times of necessity, but not with his heart. And they bring forward a certain book, which they say has fallen from heaven and that the one who has heard it and believes will receive remission of his sins, another remission besides that which Christ Jesus has given.” But indeed Decius succeeded Philip, who had reigned for seven years; who, on account of his enmity toward Philip, raised up a persecution against the churches, in which, when Fabianus at Rome had been perfected by martyrdom, Cornelius succeeded to the episcopate. 6.39.2 And in Palestine, Alexander, the bishop of the church of Jerusalem, again for Christ’s sake stood before the tribunals of the governors in Caesarea and, having distinguished himself in a second confession, he was put in prison, crowned with a ripe old age and venerable gray hair. 6.39.3 And when he, after his brilliant and illustrious testimony in the governors' courts, had fallen asleep in prison, Mazabanes was appointed successor to the episcopate in Jerusalem. 6.39.4 And in a similar manner to Alexander, when Babylas in Antioch had passed away in prison after confession, Fabius presided over the church there. 6.39.5 What things, then, and how many happened to Origen during the persecution, and what sort of end he met, when the evil demon, vying with the man, arrayed his whole host and with every device and power warred against him and assailed him more fiercely than all who were warred against at that time, and what things and how many the man endured for the word of Christ, bonds and bodily tortures, and punishments under iron and in the depths of a prison, and how for many days his feet were stretched four spaces in the punishing stocks, and he bore bravely the threats of fire and whatever other things were inflicted by his enemies, and what sort of end befell him, the judge striving contentiously with all his might by no means to kill him, and what sort of utterances he left after these things, themselves full of help for those in need of recovery, very many letters of the man contain both the truth and the exact account. 6.40.1 The things concerning Dionysius I will set forth from his letter to Germanus, where he, speaking about himself, relates the following: "But I speak before God, and he himself knows if I am lying; not on my own initiative nor without God have I made my flight, 6.40.2 but even before, when the persecution under Decius was decreed, at that very hour Sabinus sent a frumentarius to search for me, and I remained at home for four days, expecting the arrival of the frumentarius, but he went about searching everything, the roads, the rivers, the fields, where he supposed I was hiding or walking, but he was held by blindness, not finding the house; for he did not believe that I, being persecuted, would remain at home. 6.40.3 And with difficulty, after the fourth day, when God commanded me to depart and miraculously made a way, I and the children and many of the brethren went out together. And that this was a work of God’s providence, the things that followed showed, in which perhaps we became useful to some." 6.40.4 Then, after saying some things in between, he declares what happened to him after the flight, adding these words: "For about sunset, I, along with those who were with me, having been taken by the soldiers, was brought to Taposiris, but Timothy, by the providence of God, happened not to be present nor was he seized, but coming later he found the house empty and servants guarding it, and us enslaved." 6.40.5 And after other things he says: "And what was the manner of his wonderful dispensation? For the truth shall be told, one of the country folk met Timothy as he was fleeing and was disturbed, and asked the reason for his haste. 6.40.6 And he told the truth,

Ἀλλὰ γὰρ Φίλιππον ἔτεσιν ἑπτὰ βασιλεύσαντα διαδέχεται ∆έκιος· ὃς δὴ τοῦ πρὸς Φίλιππον ἔχθους ἕνεκα διωγμὸν κατὰ τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν ἐγείρει, ἐν ᾧ Φαβιανοῦ ἐπὶ Ῥώμης μαρτυρίῳ τελειωθέντος, Κορνήλιος τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν διαδέχεται. 6.39.2 ἐπὶ δὲ Παλαιστίνης Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ τῆς Ἱεροσολύμων ἐκκλησίας ἐπίσκοπος αὖθις διὰ Χριστὸν ἐν τῇ Καισαρείᾳ ἡγεμονικοῖς παραστὰς δικαστηρίοις καὶ ἐπὶ δευτέρᾳ διαπρέψας ὁμολογίᾳ, δεσμωτηρίου πειρᾶται, λιπαρῷ γήρει καὶ σεμνῇ πολιᾷ κατεστεμμένος. 6.39.3 τούτου δὲ μετὰ τὴν ἐν τοῖς ἡγεμονικοῖς δικαστηρίοις λαμπρὰν καὶ περιφανῆ μαρτυρίαν ἐπὶ τῆς εἱρκτῆς κοιμηθέντος, Μαζαβάνης διάδοχος τῆς ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐπισκοπῆς ἀναδείκνυται. 6.39.4 τῷ δ' Ἀλεξάνδρῳ παραπλησίως ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ τοῦ Βαβυλᾶ μετὰ ὁμο λογίαν ἐν δεσμωτηρίῳ μεταλλάξαντος, Φάβιος τῆς αὐτόθι προΐσταται ἐκκλησίας. 6.39.5 τὰ μὲν οὖν Ὠριγένει κατὰ τὸν διωγμὸν συμβάντα οἷα καὶ ὅσα, καὶ ὁποίας ἔτυχεν τελευτῆς, τοῦ πονηροῦ δαίμονος ἐφαμίλλως τἀνδρὶ πανστρατιᾷ παραταξαμένου πάσῃ τε μηχανῇ καὶ δυνάμει κατ' αὐτοῦ στρατηγήσαντος παρὰ πάντας τε τοὺς τηνικάδε πολεμηθέντας διαφερόντως ἐπισκήψαντος αὐτῷ, οἷά τε καὶ ὅσα διὰ τὸν Χριστοῦ λόγον ὁ ἀνὴρ ὑπέμεινεν, δεσμὰ καὶ βασάνους τὰς κατὰ τοῦ σώματος τάς τε ὑπὸ σιδήρῳ καὶ μυχοῖς εἱρκτῆς τιμωρίας, καὶ ὡς ἐπὶ πλείσταις ἡμέραις τοὺς πόδας ὑπὸ τέσσαρα τοῦ κολαστηρίου ξύλου παραταθεὶς διαστήματα, πυρός τε ἀπειλὰς καὶ ὅσα ἄλλα πρὸς τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἐπενεχθέντα καρτερῶς ἤνεγκεν, οἵου τε τὰ κατ' αὐτὸν ἔτυχεν τέλους, μηδαμῶς αὐτὸν ἀνελεῖν παντὶ σθένει τοῦ δικαστοῦ φιλονείκως ἐνστάντος, ὁποίας τε μετὰ ταῦτα καταλείπει φωνὰς καὶ αὐτὰς πλήρεις τοῖς ἀναλήψεως δεομένοις ὠφελείας, πλεῖσται ὅσαι τἀνδρὸς ἐπιστολαὶ τἀληθὲς ὁμοῦ καὶ ἀκριβὲς περιέχουσιν. 6.40.1 Τά γέ τοι κατὰ ∆ιονύσιον ἐκ τῆς πρὸς Γερμανὸν ἐπιστολῆς αὐτοῦ παραθήσομαι, ἔνθα τοῦτον περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λέγων ἱστορεῖ τὸν τρόπον· «ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ λαλῶ, καὶ αὐτὸς οἶδεν εἰ ψεύδομαι· οὐδεμίαν ἐπ' ἐμαυτοῦ βαλλόμενος οὐδὲ ἀθεεὶ πεποίημαι τὴν φυγήν, 6.40.2 ἀλλὰ καὶ πρότερον, τοῦ κατὰ ∆έκιον προτεθέντος διωγμοῦ, Σαβῖνος αὐτῆς ὥρας φρουμεντάριον ἔπεμψεν εἰς ἀναζήτησίν μου, κἀγὼ μὲν τεσσάρων ἡμερῶν ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας ἔμεινα, τὴν ἄφιξιν τοῦ φρουμενταρίου προσδοκῶν, ὃ δὲ πάντα μὲν περιῆλθεν ἀνερευνῶν, τὰς ὁδοὺς τοὺς ποταμοὺς τοὺς ἀγρούς, ἔνθα κρύπτεσθαί με ἢ βαδίζειν ὑπενόησεν, ἀορασίᾳ δὲ εἴχετο μὴ εὑρίσκων τὴν οἰκίαν· οὐ γὰρ ἐπίστευεν οἴκοι με διωκόμενον μένειν. 6.40.3 καὶ μόλις, μετὰ τὴν τετάρτην ἡμέραν, κελεύσαντός μοι μεταστῆναι τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ παραδόξως ὁδοποιήσαντος, ἐγώ τε καὶ οἱ παῖδες καὶ πολλοὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἅμα συνεξήλθομεν. καὶ ὅτι τῆς τοῦ θεοῦ προνοίας ἔργον ἐκεῖνο γέγονεν, τὰ ἑξῆς ἐδήλωσεν, ἐν οἷς τάχα τισὶν γεγόναμεν χρήσιμοι». 6.40.4 εἶτά τινα μεταξὺ εἰπών, τὰ μετὰ τὴν φυγὴν αὐτῷ συμβεβηκότα δηλοῖ, ταῦτα ἐπιφέρων· «ἐγὼ μὲν γὰρ περὶ ἡλίου δυσμὰς ἅμα τοῖς σὺν ἐμοὶ γενόμενος ὑπὸ τοῖς στρατιώταις, εἰς Ταπόσιριν ἤχθην, ὁ δὲ Τιμόθεος κατὰ τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ πρόνοιαν ἔτυχεν μὴ παρὼν μηδὲ καταληφθείς, ἐλθὼν δὲ ὕστερον εὗρεν τὸν οἶκον ἔρημον καὶ φρουροῦντας αὐτὸν ὑπηρέτας, ἡμᾶς δὲ ἐξηνδραποδισμένους». 6.40.5 καὶ μεθ' ἕτερά φησιν· «καὶ τίς ὁ τῆς θαυμασίας οἰκονομίας αὐτοῦ τρόπος; τὰ γὰρ ἀληθῆ λεχθήσεται, ἀπήντετό τις τῶν χωριτῶν ὑποφεύγοντι τῷ Τιμοθέῳ καὶ τεταραγμένῳ, καὶ τὴν αἰτίαν τῆς ἐπείξεως ἐπύθετο. 6.40.6 ὃ δὲ τἀληθὲς ἐξεῖπεν,
