was arrested and died. And Sergius, the nephew of Aetherius, escaped and took refuge in Blachernae, whom they brought out of the church and, having interrogated him, persuaded him to confess, that Isaac the silversmith and Belisarius the most glorious patrician and he himself were also privy to such a plot, and Vitus the silversmith and Paul, the curator of the same Belisarius, knew of the plan. And when both were arrested and handed over to Procopius the prefect, they gave evidence and denounced Belisarius the patrician. Immediately, therefore, the emperor became indignant with Belisarius; and many resorted to flight. And on the 5th of the month of December, the emperor held a silentium, bringing in also the most holy patriarch Eutychius, having ordered their depositions to be read out; and upon hearing them, Belisarius was greatly distressed and fell under the emperor's indignation. And the emperor sent and took all his men and confined him to his house under guard. On the 24th of the month of December, the consecration of the great church took place for the second time; and the all-night vigil of the same consecration took place at Saint Plato, and from there the patriarch of Constantinople, Eutychius, came forth with the litany, with the emperor also present, sitting in his carriage and wearing the apostolic habit and holding the holy gospel, while all were chanting: "Lift up your gates, O ye rulers." In the same month some parts of Africa were taken by the Mauritanians, who had revolted against Africa in the following manner. A certain Cutzinas by name from the same nation, exarch of the Mauritanians, had a custom of receiving a stipulated amount of gold from the then-ruler of Africa. But when he came to receive it, John, the ruler of Africa, murdered him. 239 And the children of the same Cutzinas rose up, avenging their paternal blood, and revolting against Africa, they took some parts of it, plundering them. The emperor, therefore, learning this, sent to the aid of Africa Marcian, his nephew and strategos, with an army in order to pacify the Moors. And they submitted to him, and Africa was pacified. In the month of April, Procopius, the prefect of the city, was succeeded, and in his place came Andreas, from the logothetes. And as he was coming out of the palace of the Chalke, sitting in his carriage and going to the praetorium, the Greens met him at the Lauson; and they began to insult and stone him; and a great disorder arose in the Mese between the two factions. And they entered the guard-posts, and the fight lasted from the 10th hour. And the emperor sent Justin, his nephew and curopalates, and drove them away. And again around the 12th hour they joined battle and were overcome and paraded for many days; and they cut off the thumbs of those who had fought with swords. And on the 19th of the month of July, Belisarius the patrician was received back, having recovered also all his dignities. And Peter the magister also arrived from Persia, having made a peace treaty for 17 years for Lazica and the eastern parts. In the same month, ambassadors of Askel, the king of the Hermichiones, the barbarian nation situated inland near the ocean, came to Constantinople. In the month of August, there was a shortage of water, so that the public baths were closed, and murders occurred at the water-conduits. 240 Years of the world ϛνϛʹ.
